Methionine synthase reductase A66G polymorphism contributes to tumor susceptibility: evidence from 35 case-control studies.

Methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) gene is involved in tumorigenesis by regulating DNA methylation through activation of methionine synthase (MTR). MTRR is polymorphic at nucleotide 66 (A-to-G) and the resulting variant enzyme has a lower affinity for MTR. The reported associations of MTRR A66G polymorphism with cancer risk are contradictory. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to better assess the associations, including 18,661 cases and 27,678 controls from 35 studies. Crude ORs with 95% CIs were used to assess the strength of association between the MTRR A66G polymorphism and cancer r

Comparing statistical methods for removing seasonal variation from vitamin D measurements in case-control studies.

Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to be associated with multiple clinical outcomes, including osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and colorectal cancer. In studies of vitamin D effect on disease outcome, vitamin D status is usually measured by a serum biomarker, namely 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D]. Since the circulating 25(OH)D concentration varies from season to season and not all blood samples are collected at the same time, the disease-vitamin D relationship can be obscured if the seasonal variation is not adjusted properly. In the literature, a two-step procedure is usually adopted, with

Nanosensors: towards morphological control of gas sensing activity. SnO2, In2O3, ZnO and WO3 case studies.

Anisotropy is a basic property of single crystals. Dissimilar facets/surfaces have different geometric and electronic structure that results in dissimilar functional properties. Several case studies unambiguously demonstrated that the gas sensing activity of metal oxides is determined by the nature of surfaces exposed to ambient gas. Accordingly, a control over crystal morphology, i.e. over the angular relationships, size and shape of faces in a crystal, is required for the development of better sensors with increased selectivity and sensitivity in the chemical determination of gases. The firs

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) outbreak at a university hospital in Kitakyushu, Japan: case-control studies.

At a university hospital in Japan, a total of 15 patients (14 adults and 1 newborn baby) with vancomycinresistant enterococci (VRE) infection or colonization (inf/col) were identified via routine clinical examinations and two nonroutine examinations from January to April 2007. Two case-control studies were conducted to identify the factors related to VRE inf/col. In study 1, the patients with VRE inf/col from ward A (n = 8) were compared with all of the patients without VRE isolates in the same ward, i.e., the controls (n = 26). In study 2, all adult patients with VRE inf/col throughout the ho

Association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and bulimia nervosa: analysis of 4 case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a common feature of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and evidence suggests that impulsivity traits may be an indicator of poor prognosis for individuals with bulimia nervosa. To identify whether there is an association between ADHD and bulimia nervosa, the authors systematically examined data from children and adults with and without ADHD. METHOD: We systematically identified rates of bulimia nervosa in individuals with and without ADHD (DSM-III-R criteria) in our 2 large pediatric and 2 large adult samples (N = 522 children, 742 adults). Subjects we

A pooled analysis of case-control studies of thyroid cancer. II. Menstrual and reproductive factors.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that female hormones, and hence menstrual and reproductive factors, play a role in thyroid cancer etiology. Epidemiological data, however, are limited and inconsistent, partly because of the small number of cases included in each study. To clarify the etiology of thyroid cancer, we conducted a pooled analysis of original data from 14 case-control studies, 4 from the United States, 2 from Asia, and 8 from Europe. METHODS: This analysis included a total of 2,247 female cases of thyroid cancer (80% papillary) and 3,699 control women. Pooled odds ratios (OR) were

Testicular cancer, cryptorchidism, inguinal hernia, testicular atrophy, and genital malformations: case-control studies in Denmark.

To explore risk factors for testicular cancer and cryptorchidism, two parallel case-control studies were conducted in Denmark. The testicular cancer study was population-based and included 514 cases and 720 controls. The cryptorchidism study included 387 cases and 416 controls and was based on two hospital series of men treated for cryptorchidism and a control group sampled among residents in the Copenhagen area. The 2,037 men were interviewed by telephone. The relative risk (RR) of testicular cancer in men with treated or persisting cryptorchidism was 3.6 (95 percent confidence interval = 1.8

Bias in using family history as a risk factor in case-control studies of disease.

In many case-control studies of common diseases, investigators use family history information to assess familial aggregation of the disease and the influence of genetic factors. Positive family history among first-degree relatives is often used as a risk factor, and its odds ratio is calculated. Although the limitations of this approach have been discussed, it is not clear how much impact such limitations could have on measuring familial aggregation. To assess this impact, we compare odds ratios derived from using a positive family history in case-control studies with measures of relative risk

Misclassification bias related to definition of menopausal status in case-control studies of breast cancer.

It is often assumed, but has not been consistently observed, that some characteristics of reproductive history are specifically related to breast cancer of pre- or postmenopausal onset. To determine whether inconsistent reports may be due to differences in definition of menopause, we computed the relative odds (RO) of breast cancer for nulliparity, age at first live birth, family history of breast cancer and prior history of benign breast disease, separately in pre- and postmenopausal women, using seven different definitions of menopause. Results show that (i) relative odds of breast cancer an

Oesophageal cancer studies in the Caspian Littoral of Iran: results of a case-control study.

The results are presented of a case-control study conducted in the north of Iran. The main aim was to study factors identified in a previous study as potentially causally related to cancer of the oesophagus. Other tumours (lung, stomach, breast, large bowel, larynx and pharynx) were included to distinguish findings specific for oesophageal cancer from general characteristics of cancer patients, due for example to ascertainment bias, and to verify that expected associations, such as between lung cancer and cigarette smoking, would emerge under the prevailing field conditions. Two controls were

Statistical method for pooling categorical biomarker data from multi-center matched/nested case-control studies.

Pooled analyses that aggregate data from multiple studies are becoming increasingly common in collaborative epidemiologic research to increase sample size and population diversity. Many biomarkers, such as vitamin D, are routinely analyzed using clinically defined categories rather than their original continuous scales, yet statistical methods for pooling biomarker data across studies have largely focused on continuous biomarkers. Biomarker measurements from different studies are subject to systematic measurement errors and directly pooling them for analyses may lead to biased estimates of the

Cortisol and polycystic ovarian syndrome - a systematic search and meta-analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) has become an emerging disorder affecting women of reproductive age group. Its intricate presentation of signs and symptoms makes it a disease of interest to research. While there are varied hypotheses related to its cause and pathogenesis, role of stress in this disease is yet to be grounded. There is emerging body of evidence on cortisol and PCOS, although it is currently equivocal. METHODS: Medline, Embase, Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scopus were searched from March 1985 to March 2020 using MeSH terms. After dual quality assess

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Monetary Delay Discounting: A Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of studies have investigated delay discounting, a behavioral economic index of impulsivity, and its relevance to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but with mixed findings. The current meta-analysis synthesizes the literature on the relationship between monetary delay discounting and ADHD in studies using case-control designs. Specifically, the objectives were: 1) to characterize the aggregated differences in monetary delay discounting between individuals with ADHD (cases) and controls in studies using categorical case-control designs; 2) to examine p

Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness Changes in Migraine: A Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: The neurovascular dysfunction appears to be related to the development of migraines and it could be possible that hypoperfusion might also involve other areas besides brain, including the retina. Numerous studies have analyzed the ability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness abnormalities and changes in migraine, but the results have not always been consistent. Therefore, we carried out a meta-analysis to evaluate the RNFL thickness measured with OCT in migraine. METHODS: Case-control studies were selected through an electronic

Bacterial Factors Associated with Lethal Outcome of Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli Infection: Genomic Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: Typical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (tEPEC) strains were associated with mortality in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS). Genetic differences in tEPEC strains could underlie some of the variability in clinical outcome. METHODS: We produced draft genome sequences of all available tEPEC strains from GEMS lethal infections (LIs) and of closely matched EPEC strains from GEMS subjects with non-lethal symptomatic infections (NSIs) and asymptomatic infections (AIs) to identify gene clusters (potential protein encoding sequences sharing ≥90% nucleotide sequence identity) as

Rethinking sources of representative controls for the conduct of case-control studies in minority populations.

BACKGROUND: Recruitment of controls remains a challenge in case-control studies and particularly in studies involving minority populations. METHODS: We compared characteristics of controls recruited through random digit dialing (RDD) to those of community controls enrolled through churches, health events and other outreach sources among women of African ancestry (AA) participating in the Women's Circle of Health Study, a case-control study of breast cancer. Tubal ligation and risk of ovarian cancer subtypes: a pooled analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Tubal ligation is a protective factor for ovarian cancer, but it is unknown whether this protection extends to all invasive histological subtypes or borderline tumors. We undertook an international collaborative study to examine the association between tubal ligation and ovarian cancer subtypes. METHODS: We pooled primary data from 13 population-based case-control studies, including 10,157 patients with ovarian cancer (7942 invasive; 2215 borderline) and 13,904 control women. Invasive cases were analysed by histological type, grade and stage, and borderline cases were analysed by

Homocysteine and coronary heart disease: meta-analysis of MTHFR case-control studies, avoiding publication bias.

BACKGROUND: Moderately elevated blood levels of homocysteine are weakly correlated with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk, but causality remains uncertain. When folate levels are low, the TT genotype of the common C677T polymorphism (rs1801133) of the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) appreciably increases homocysteine levels, so "Mendelian randomization" studies using this variant as an instrumental variable could help test causality. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Nineteen unpublished datasets were obtained (total 48,175 CHD cases and 67,961 controls) in which multiple genetic varian

The analysis of case-control studies of the efficacy of screening for recurrence of cancer.

Occasionally, the efficacy of screening for cancer recurrence has been evaluated by means of case-control studies. However, these studies generally have not been designed and analyzed in a manner that will yield an unbiased result. The commentary shows that by adhering to the principles developed for the analysis of studies of the efficacy of screening for the presence of a given cancer in persons with no history of this disease, a case-control study of screening for recurrence will improve its chances of obtaining valid findings.
