Obstruction of the ventricular catheter of a CSF shunt system due to the own cyst of Taenia solium.

Five patients were studied who suffered secondary hydrocephalus due to neurocysticercosis. Shunt dysfunction was due to the obstruction of the ventricular catheter caused by the own cysticercus cysts. The Biomed system was used in four cases and the Hakim system in one. Valvular dysfunction was observed in patients within a period of 18 to 24 months after surgery, they had a history of several valvular dysfunctions. The diagnosis was made upon of extracting the catheter where the cyst was found to be attached to the ventricular brush. Subsequent evolution has not been satisfactory. The reasons

Effect of Intracoronary Tirofiban Through Guiding Catheter Compared With Intracoronary Tirofiban Through Aspiration Catheter on the Microvascular Obstruction in Patients With STEMI Undergoing PCI: A Cardiac MR Study.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality. Reperfusion therapy in acute MI reduces mortality, but microvascular obstruction (MVO) may persist. Tirofiban improves myocardial perfusion by inhibiting platelet aggregation. AIMS: This study aims to compare intracoronary tirofiban delivery via guiding catheter versus aspiration catheter on MVO and myocardial salvage in ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI) patients undergoing PCI. METHODS: In this randomized study, 118 STEMI patients were classified into two groups: Group A (n = 56) received tirofiban via

Clinical experience and video description of minimally invasive surgery for benign prostatic obstruction using the Schelin Catheter®.

Although designed for in-office use, water vapor thermal therapy (Rezum™) remains a painful procedure, and oral±intravenous sedation is often required. Schelin Catheter® (ProstaLund AB, Lund, Sweden) is an innovative bladder catheter that delivers local anesthesia to the prostate in a sterile transurethral way. We aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of Rezum™ for male lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction (LUTS/BPO) with local anesthesia delivered with Schelin® catheter, and to report its first step-by-step video description. A total of 15 patients were enro

Benefit of a laparoscopic jejunostomy feeding catheter insertion to prevent bowel obstruction associated with feeding jejunostomy after esophagectomy.

The placement of a jejunostomy catheter during esophagectomy may cause postoperative bowel obstruction. The proximity of the jejunostomy site to the midline might be associated with bowel obstruction, and we have introduced laparoscopic jejunostomy (Lap-J) to reduce jejunostomy's left lateral gap. We evaluated 92 patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between February 2013 and August 2022 to clarify the benefits of Lap-J compared to other methods. The patients were classified into two groups according to the method of feeding catheter insertion: jejunostomy via small laparo

Over-the-catheter endoscope replacement for stenting in patients with inaccessible malignant colonic obstruction with coexisting peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Although a large-caliber endoscope (LCE) is indispensable for through-the-scope placement of a self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) in patients with malignant colonic obstruction (MCO), inaccessibility of the target obstructing lesion (TOL) by the endoscope is a significant cause of unsuccessful procedures. We herein present a novel salvage procedure when the TOL is not directly accessible by an LCE in conditions such as coexisting peritoneal carcinomatosis involving the colon. The salvage procedure, termed over-the-catheter endoscope replacement (OCER), starts with an ultraslim endoscope sui

Catheter-directed thrombolytic therapy combined with angioplasty for hepatic vein obstruction in Budd-Chiari syndrome complicated by thrombosis.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of catheter-directed thrombolysis combined with angioplasty in the treatment of hepatic vein obstruction in Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) complicated by thrombosis. In 14 cases of BCS, the patients with hepatic vein obstruction complicated by thrombosis who underwent catheter-directed urokinase thrombolysis, balloon dilatation and/or stent placement were followed up with an ultrasound examination of the liver. Among the 13 cases of successful treatment, one hepatic vein was recanalized in 12 patients (right hepatic vein, seven cases; lef

Catheter interventional treatment of Sano shunt obstruction in patients following modified Norwood palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Shunts placed between the right ventricle and the pulmonary arteries, called Sano shunts, recently modified Norwood surgery for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Patients with Sano shunts tend to be more stable thus reducing the interstage mortality of this still challenging complex cardiac anomaly. However, Sano shunt stenosis may develop and is a life threatening complication. We report on our experience in patients with Sano shunt obstruction. PATIENTS: Eight infants presenting with decreasing transcutaneous oxygen saturations (43-63%, median 58%) following modified Norwood proc

Percutaneous transhepatic insertion of metal stents with a double-pigtail catheter in afferent loop obstruction following distal gastrectomy.

We report successful outcome following transhepatic insertion of metal stents with a double-pigtail catheter in a patient with afferent loop syndrome caused by recurrent gastric carcinoma. A 77-year-old man was admitted with a 2-week history of fever, right upper quadrant pain, and jaundice. His past medical history included distal gastrectomy for treatment of gastric cancer two years previously. Abdominal computed tomography revealed marked dilation of the jejunal limb and intrahepatic bile duct. We diagnosed the patient with afferent loop syndrome resulting from recurrent cancer. Non-Surgical Resolution of Phytobezoar-Induced Bowel Obstruction Using Sodium Bicarbonate and Catheter: A Report of 2 Cases.

BACKGROUND Phytobezoar-induced small bowel obstruction presents significant management challenges, particularly in patients who either decline surgery or have contraindications. These concretions, predominantly composed of persimmon tannins, account for 0.4-4.8% of intestinal obstructions in endemic regions. While surgical intervention remains standard for complete obstructions, non-surgical approaches are increasingly explored for high-risk patients. Current dissolution therapies, including the Coca-Cola protocol, often require large fluid volumes that can exacerbate the obstruction. This stu

Superior Vena Cava (SVC) Endovascular Reconstruction with Implanted Central Venous Catheter Repositioning for Treatment of Malignant SVC Obstruction.

Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome is a group of clinical signs caused by the obstruction or compression of SVC and characterized by edema of the head, neck, and upper extremities, shortness of breath, and headaches. The syndrome may be caused by benign causes but most of the cases are caused by lung or mediastinal malignant tumors. Stenting of SVC has become widely accepted as the palliative treatment for this condition in malignant diseases, as it offers rapid relief of symptoms and improves the quality of life. Preserving previously placed central venous catheters (CVCs) is a major issue in

A child case of acute right coronary obstruction due to catheter-induced coronary dissection: successful reperfusion without stenting.

We report on a 10-year-old child who suffered from acute right coronary obstruction due to catheter-induced coronary dissection. Immediate placement of a perfusion catheter into the obstructed right coronary artery and subsequent overnight reperfusion allowed successful recovery of the right coronary artery lumen without implantation of a stent. Follow-up angiography demonstrated spontaneous regression of the dissected coronary artery and normal right and left ventricular wall motion. The indication of stent implantation should be carefully determined in a child case of iatrogenic coronary dis

Evaluation of risk factors for obstruction of the intraventricular catheter after ventriculoperitoneal shunting in dogs with congenital internal hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Ventriculoperitoneal shunting (VPS) is the standard treatment for congenital internal hydrocephalus in dogs; however, obstruction of the ventricular catheter is a frequent and serious complication. In human medicine, several predictors of catheter obstruction have been identified, while corresponding risk factors in veterinary patients remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for ventricular catheter obstruction after VPS implantation in dogs with congenital internal hydrocephalus. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted

Hybrid angioplasty-catheter placement procedure performed in a hemodialysis patient with central venous obstruction disease. Presentation of a case.

Obstruction or occlusion of the central veins (Central venous disease, CVD) represents a major complication in hemodialysis patients (HD) limiting central venous access available for a central venous catheter placement. Endovascular treatment with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is the first therapeutic option to restore patency and gain access. This case presents our initial experience of a HD patient with CVD treated with a combination therapy of a balloon PTA to the left brachiocephalic trunk, through the right hepatic vein and standard catheter placement technique to the previo

Right ventricular dysfunction in chronic thromboembolic obstruction of the pulmonary artery: a pressure-volume study using the conductance catheter.

Pressure-volume loops describe dynamic ventricular performance, relevant to patients with and at risk of pulmonary hypertension. We used conductance catheter-derived pressure-volume loops to measure right ventricular (RV) mechanics in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary arterial obstruction at different stages of pathological adaptation. Resting conductance catheterization was performed in 24 patients: 10 with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), 7 with chronic thromboembolic disease without pulmonary hypertension (CTED), and 7 controls. To assess the validity of c
