Functional connectivity between left rostral anterior cingulate cortex and left caudate nucleus: Linking future self-continuity to achievement motivation.

Future self-continuity (FSC) and achievement motivation are two psychological constructs that facilitate future-oriented cognition and goal-directed behavior. However, the neural circuits integrating these constructs remain understudied from a cognitive neuroscience perspective-specifically how self-referential processing (a core component of FSC) interacts with reward valuation supported by the caudate. To address this question, we explored the relationship between future self-continuity and achievement motivation using a combination of resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and mediati

Monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitor protects primary cultured neurons against homocysteine-induced impairments in rat caudate nucleus through COX-2 signaling.

AIMS: URB602 is a selective inhibitor of monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), a serine hydrolase involved in the biological deactivation of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG). It has been described that URB602 significantly enhances depolarization-induced increases in 2-AG. A high level of homocysteine (Hcy) is a modifiable risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of URB602 on Hcy-induced impairments underlying its cellular and molecular mechanism in primary cultured caudate nucleus (CN) neurons. Three-dimensional surface deformation-based shape analysis of hippocampus and caudate nucleus in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Surface deformation-based analysis was used to assess local shape variations in the hippocampi and caudate nuclei of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. High-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging images were acquired for 31 children (19 controls and 12 children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome/partial FAS). Hippocampi and caudate nuclei were manually segmented, and surface meshes were reconstructed. An iterative closest point algorithm was used to register the template of one control subject to all other shapes in order to capture the true geometry of the shape with

Mitigation of addictive effects induced by lorazepam through concurrent administration of SSRI: Interplay of serotonin and dopamine in caudate and nucleus accumbens.

The present study aimed to assess the antidepressant profile of fluoxetine in the rats exhibiting lorazepam-induced abusive effects in place preference paradigm. Lorazepam, a benzodiazepine is commonly utilized for treating anxiety, panic attacks, status epilepticus, depressive disorders and sedation. Despite its therapeutic benefits, repeated lorazepam administration can lead to dependence, possibly involving heightened dopaminergic neurotransmission. Additionally, an important role is played by serotonergic system in anxiety and addiction pathophysiology and treatment. The study aimed to exa

Statistical analyses of structural magnetic resonance imaging of the head of the caudate nucleus in Colombian children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of the caudate nucleus have reported reversal asymmetry and alterations of its size, suggesting a striate cortical disorder related to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The objective was to evaluate whether alterations of the asymmetry and size of the caudate nucleus head exist in a sample of well-controlled 7- to 11-year-old Colombian children, with different types of ADHD. Two groups of cases-ADHD of the combined type and ADHD of the inattentive type-and one control group, were selected. Multiple methods for assessing ADHD (rating scale

Intracranial microdialysis of salicylic acid to detect hydroxyl radical generation through dopamine autooxidation in the caudate nucleus: effects of MPP+.

Ringer's solution containing salicylic acid (5 nmol/microliters/min) was infused directly through an intracranial microdialysis probe to detect the generation of hydroxyl radicals (.OH) reflected by the formation of dihydroxybenzoic acids (DHBA) in the caudate nucleus of anesthetized rats. Brain dialysate was assayed for dopamine, 2,3-, and 2,5-DHBA by a high-pressure liquid chromatography-electrochemical (HPLC-EC) procedure. 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ions (MPP+, 0 to 150 nmol) increased dose-dependently the release of dopamine and the formation of DHBA. A positive linear correlation between

MRI-based glymphatic metrics correlate with caudate nucleus dopaminergic deficits and are independent of amyloid-β pathway in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Glymphatic dysfunction is thought to underlie neurodegenerative dementia; however, its interplay with dopaminergic degeneration and concurrent amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unresolved. This study aimed to evaluate MRI-based glymphatic metrics (the diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space [DTI-ALPS] index and choroid plexus volume [CPV]) and their associations with dopaminergic degeneration, Aβ burden, and cognitive impairment (CI) in PD. METHODS: 79 PD patients (48 with CI (PD-CI), and 31 cognitive normal (PD-N)) and 28 age-, gend

Volume reduction of caudate nucleus is associated with movement coordination deficits in patients with hippocampal atrophy due to perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia.

Acute sentinel hypoxia-ischaemia in neonates can target the hippocampus, mammillary bodies, thalamus, and the basal ganglia. Our previous work with paediatric patients with a history of hypoxia-ischaemia has revealed hippocampal and diencephalic damage that impacts cognitive memory. However, the structural and functional status of other brain regions vulnerable to hypoxia-ischaemia, such as the basal ganglia, has not been investigated in these patients. Furthermore, it is not known whether there are any behavioural sequelae of such damage, especially in patients with no diagnosis of neurologic

Effects of chronic treatment with high doses of chlorpromazine on ATP and ADP hydrolysis by synaptosomal fractions from the rat caudate nucleus.

Several studies have indicated that chlorpromazine and its metabolites affect ATP hydrolysis by brain and liver plasma membranes in vitro. The present report examines whether chronic treatment (12 days) with high doses of chlorpromazine (10 and 40 mg/kg) could affect ATP and ADP hydrolysis by synaptosomal fractions from the rat caudate nucleus. Both doses of chlorpromazine caused significant and parallel decreases (23 to 31%) in the ATP and ADP hydrolysis. The parallelism between the effects of chlorpromazine on ATP and ADP hydrolysis suggests the participation of a single enzyme (ATP diphosph

Anterograde and retrograde degenerative reactions in caudate nucleus and putamen after experimental lesion of the pallidum in squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

After stereotactic lesions in the pallidum in 4 squirrel monkeys, electron microscopic material from the striatum was examined for anterograde and retrograde degenerative changes. In the experiment with pallidum internum lesion, only degenerated striatal fibers were observed, more than likely thalamostriatal fibers that pass through the site of the lesion. The three experiments with pallidum externum lesion revealed that the two types of striatal aspiny neurons react with a penumbral degeneration to interruption of their axons. Also, the axospinous type IV striatal synapses, which originate in

Neurotensin, N-acetyl-aspartylglutamate and beta-endorphin modulate [3H]dopamine release from guinea pig nucleus accumbens, prefrontal cortex and caudate-putamen.

Dopaminergic hyperactivity in nucleus accumbens and dopaminergic hypoactivity in prefrontal cortex are thought to underlie positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, respectively. The caudate putamen is the neuroanatomical substrate for extrapyramidal side effects resulting from chronic antipsychotic treatment. We sought to identify potential endogenous regulators of dopamine release that might produce differential effects in these brain areas. We tested neurotensin, N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate and beta-endorphin for potential regulation of [3H]dopamine release in these regions of guinea

Cerebral infarction in the caudate nucleus associated with acute epidural hematoma and diffuse brain injury in a child after severe head injury.

CASE REPORT: A 6-year-old boy was admitted to our hospital 20 min after receiving a direct impact to his head in an automobile accident. He was semi-comatose on admission and computed tomography showed acute epidural hematoma in the right supratentorial region. Three hours later, his consciousness deteriorated due to the enlargement of the hematoma. Surgical removal of hematoma relieved his consciousness disturbance. Post-operative magnetic resonance imaging revealed spotty high-intensity lesions in the corpus callosum on T2-weighted images, and a solitary high-intensity lesion in the left cau

Severe frontal syndrome associated with infarcts of the left anterior cingulate gyrus and the head of the right caudate nucleus. A clinico-pathological case.

The clinicopathological findings in a patient who presented a severe frontal syndrome and who had ischaemic lesions in the left anterior cingulate gyrus and in the head of the right caudate nucleus are reported. The clinical features included complex disorders such as distractibility, docility, emotional unconcern, manual grasping, prehension and utilization behaviour, perseverations and anterograde amnesia. They are closely similar to those previously described in a patient with bilateral lesions involving the anterior cingulate gyri. These findings suggest that (i) in the presence of a lesio

Role of dynorphin-containing neurons in the presynaptic inhibitory control of the acetylcholine-evoked release of dopamine in the striosomes and the matrix of the cat caudate nucleus.

The roles of acetylcholine and dynorphin (1-13) in the presynaptic control of the release of [3H]dopamine continuously synthesized from [3H]tyrosine were examined in a prominent striosomal enriched area and in an adjacent matrix enriched area of the cat caudate nucleus. This was achieved using microsuperfusion devices applied vertically onto coronal slices of cat brain. These devices were placed in a striosomal enriched area located in the core of the structure (acetylcholinesterase-poor zone) and in an adjacent matrix enriched area (acetylcholinesterase-rich zone). [3H]Tyrosine was delivered

Efferent connections of the caudate nucleus, including cortical projections of the striatum and other basal ganglia: an autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase investigation in the cat.

Tritiated tracer was injected into the head of the caudate nucleus in cats. Following such injections, labeling is present within extensive regions of both the globus pallidus and entopeduncular nucleus, where it presents a mottled or meshlike appearance. These projections are topographically organized in that there is simple correspondence between the mediolateral, dorsoventral, and rostrocaudal origin of the caudate projection and its input to the globus pallidus and entopeduncular nucleus. Transported tracer is also present within the substantia nigra, where it is most abundant within the p

No evidence for presynaptic opioid receptors on cholinergic, but presence of kappa-receptors on dopaminergic neurons in the rabbit caudate nucleus: involvement of endogenous opioids.

The effects of various opioid receptor agonists and antagonists were studied in rabbit caudate nucleus slices preincubated with either [3H]dopamine or [3H]choline, superfused with medium (containing in most experiments the D2 receptor antagonist domperidone) and subjected to electrical field stimulation. The stimulation-evoked [3H]overflow from slices prelabeled with [3H]dopamine (evoked [3H]dopamine release) was significantly reduced by preferential kappa-opioid receptor agonists, like U-50,488 H, but not by mu- or delta-opioid receptor selective drugs. Endocannabinoid 2-Arachidonoylglycerol Levels in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Caudate Putamen, Nucleus Accumbens, and Piriform Cortex Were Upregulated by Chronic Restraint Stress.

Endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) has been implicated in habituation to stress, and its augmentation reduces stress-induced anxiety-like behavior. Chronic restraint stress (CRS) changes the 2-AG levels in some gross brain areas, such as the forebrain. However, the detailed spatial distribution of 2-AG and its changes by CRS in stress processing-related anatomical structures such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), caudate putamen (CP), nucleus accumbens (NAc), and piriform cortex (PIR) are still unclear. In this study, mice were restrained for 30 min in a 50 mL-centrifuge tube

Abnormal caudate nucleus activity in patients with depressive disorder: Meta-analysis of task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging studies with behavioral domain.

During task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (t-fMRI) patients with depressive disorder (DD) have shown abnormal caudate nucleus activation. There have been no meta-analyses that are conducted on the caudate nucleus using Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) in patients with DD, and the relationships between abnormal caudate activity and different behavior domains in patients with DD remain unclear. There were 24 previously published t-fMRI studies included in the study with the caudate nucleus as the region of interest. Meta-analyses were performed using the method of ALE. Includ

Effect of Homocysteine on Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel Currents in Primary Cultured Rat Caudate Nucleus Neurons and Its Modulation by 2-Arachidonylglycerol.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is an important risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases. Caudate nucleus (CN), the largest nucleus in the brain, is also implicated in many neurological disorders. 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), the most abundant endogenous cannabinoid, has been shown to exhibit neuroprotective effects from many stimuli in the central nervous system (CNS). Furthermore, it has been reported that voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) are the common targets of many neuronal damages and drugs. However, it is still not clear whether VGSCs are involved in the
