To combat the escalating challenge of bacterial resistance, a novel class of naphthalimide-mediated nitroimidazolyl ethylalcohols (NNEs) was developed. Most of the prepared NNEs showed potent antibacterial activities. The susceptibilities of singly or multiply-resistant clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae were determined by agar dilution to aztreonam, imipenem, and six third-generation cephalosporins. FK037, a new injectable cephem antibiotic, was administered in the treatment of 13 acute bacterial prostatitis (mean age 53.5, range 30-79), and its effectiveness and safety were evaluated. The human prostatic fluid (PF) concentration of FK037 on 7 specimens 1 hour after 1 g i.v.d., was in the range of 0.87-7.47 micrograms/ml (mean +/- SD, 3.43 +/- 2.23 micrograms/ml), whereas, the serum concentration averaged 45.3 +/- 2.88 micrograms/ml, the ratio of PF/serum consequently being 0.08 +/- 0.05. The presence of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESbetaLs) in 129 Escherichia coli and 128 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains was determined with the E test. beta-lactamases were detected in 66 (51.2%) of E.coli and 107 (83.6%) of K. pneumoniae by the nitrocefin disk method. The epidemiology of species of the Bacteroides fragilis groups isolated at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center was examined. Appropriate antimicrobial treatment of shigellosis depends on identifying its changing resistance pattern over time. We evaluated 15,255 stool culture submitted from July 2001 to June 2006 to the Laboratory of Children Medical Center Hospital.
