Multiple osseous dysplasia arising from impacted teeth: report of a case associated with odontogenic lesions.

We report a case of osseous dysplasia (OD) showing extremely rare clinical features. A 37-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our clinic complaining of a left alveolar bony swelling at an impacted canine. Radiographic examinations revealed a mixed radiopaque lesion involving the impacted left canine and also revealed an impacted left wisdom tooth with a cystic change and a clear radiopaque lesion suspected to be odontoma. All the extracted upper teeth and odontoma showed hypercementosis and the canine was fully involved in it. Histopathologically, they showed the same features and were dia

A computed tomographic study of endodontic and apical changes in 81 equine cheek teeth with sagittal fractures.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal fractures of equine cheek teeth are commonly observed during oral examination. There are few reports on the apical and endodontic pathology associated with such fractures seen during computed tomographic (CT) examination. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to document the prevalence of CT changes indicative of apical disease in equine cheek teeth, which have suffered a sagittal fracture involving the clinical ± reserve crown. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a retrospective case series. METHODS: CT examinations of equine heads with sagittal fractures of cheek teeth present were re

Deep Learning on Histology Images for Differentiating Fibro-osseous Lesions of the Jaw.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD), cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), and cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) are fibro-osseous lesions of the jaw that share histologic features, making their differentiation in routine pathology practice challenging. Distinguishing these conditions is crucial for clinical management due to their varying prognoses. To address these limitations, we developed and validated a deep learning model using 1,218 hematoxylin and eosin whole slide images from 338 cases (FD, n = 130; COF, n = 146; COD, n = 62) across 3 institutions. After digital scanning and image preprocessing, we compa

Retrospective Study of 383 Cases of Fibro-Osseous Lesions of the Jaws.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to describe the clinical and radiologic features of 383 fibro-osseous lesions (FOLs) from an oral pathology reference service in Brazil and to compare the findings with previous studies. The hypothesis of the study was that the most common type of FOL would differ from other investigations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study with review of the records of the clinical and biopsy services (1990 to 2015). All records of the patients included showed a definitive diagnosis of FOL. The primary outcome variable was the type

Clinical, Radiographic and Histopathological Analysis of Cemento-Ossifying Fibromas and Fibro-Osseous Lesions of the Oral and Maxillofacial Region: A 53-Year Retrospective Study and Update of Current Concepts.

BACKGROUND: Fibro-osseous lesions (FOL) of the jawbones and cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) represent a heterogeneous group of lesions with overlapping histopathological features and variability in biological behavior. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and histopathological characteristics of FOLs (cemento-osseous dysplasia-COD, fibrous dysplasia-FD, ossifying fibroma-OF) as well as COF, diagnosed at a reference center in oral pathology over 53 years. METHODS: Sex, age, symptoms, clinical diagnosis, time of evolution, anatomical site, size of the lesion, and radio

Clinical and radiographic features of solitary and cemento-osseous dysplasia-associated simple bone cysts.

UNLABELLED: The simple bone cyst (SBC) is a pseudocyst that can occur as a solitary entity in the jaws or may occur in association with cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review the clinical and radiographic features of solitary and COD-associated SBCs. METHODS: Archived imaging reports from the Special Procedures Clinic in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto between 1 January 1989 and 31 December 2009 revealed 23 COD-associated SBCs and 68 solitary SBCs. RESULTS: Almost all solitary and COD-asso

Imaging approach for differential diagnosis of jaw lesions: a quick reference guide.

The radiologists will be frequently consulted to evaluate a variety of maxillomandibular lesions or may incidentally encounter these lesions on routine plain films, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) studies. This article provides the reader a diagnostic approach pattern when confronted with an unknown jaw lesion. The radiologic analysis for differential diagnosis primarily depends on specific cardinal and additional radiographic criteria on plain film studies. Cardinal radiographic criteria include the density of the lesion and the location with regard to the adjacent tooth s

Maxillary cementoblastoma--a rarity.

BACKGROUND: This paper highlights the unusual and rare presentation of a cementoblastoma in the maxilla. It also discusses a review on this odontogenic pathology. CASE REPORT: We present a cementoblastoma appearing in an atypical site in a young girl. The presenting clinical features with radiologic features are reviewed. Also discussed is an approach to radiological interpretation. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the seventeenth case to be reported in literature. DISCUSSION: Cementoblastoma is a benign true neoplasm which forms a mass of cementum or cementum-like tissue on the ro

[Classification of benign tumors and cysts of the jaws].

On the basis of 324 cases of maxillary tumours, the authors review the classification of these neoplasms. The most frequent tumours are benign epithelial odontogenic tumours, which represent 55% of all tumours. The most common of these tumours is the ameloblastoma, followed by the odontomas. Most of the tumours of non-dental origin are benign (72% of this group). Amongst the malignant tumours, osteosarcomas are much more common than chondrosarcomas. The authors also discuss the various types of cyst and their respective relative frequency.

Fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws.

During the 15 years since the author's 1970 paper on fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws, the subject has continued to interest the clinician and pathologist. Several new entities have been delineated during this period, and new concepts and controversies regarding the diagnosis and management of these lesions have arisen. A classification of fibro-osseous jaw lesions that the author has found to be workable is presented, and criteria for their diagnosis and management based on the authors' experience is discussed.

Multiple radiopaque mandibular lesions in a patient with Apert syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Apert syndrome (acrocephalosyndactyly) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by craniosynostosis, craniofacial anomalies, and symmetric syndactyly of the hands and feet. Oral manifestations usually include bifid uvula, a Byzantine arch palate associated with lateral swellings of the palatine processes, severe maxillary dental crowding associated with teeth malposition, severe open bite, dental caries, and gingival and periodontal disorders. Florid osseous dysplasia is an asymptomatic lesion mostly encountered during casual dental radiographic examinations as multiple sc

Gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia: a syndrome of fibro-osseous lesions of jawbones, bone fragility, and long bone bowing.

We report an unusual generalized skeletal syndrome characterized by fibro-osseous lesions of the jawbones with a prominent psammomatoid body component, bone fragility, and bowing/sclerosis of tubular bones. The case fits with the emerging profile of a distinct syndrome with similarities to previously reported cases, some with an autosomal dominant inheritance and others sporadic. We suggest that the syndrome be named gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia. The patient had been diagnosed previously with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) elsewhere, but further clinical evaluation, histopathological study,

Periapical Cemento-osseous Dysplasia Is Rarely Diagnosed on Orthopantomograms of Patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 and Is Not a Gender-specific Feature of the Disease.

UNLABELLED: Several skeletal aberrations of the skull have been described for the tumor predisposition syndrome neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Recently, periapical cemental/cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) has been described in females affected with NF1. This reactive lesion of the hard tissues in tooth-bearing areas of the jaw has been proposed to represent a gender-specific radiological feature of NF1. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of COD in patients with NF1. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The orthopantomograms (OPGs) of 179 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of NF1 were

Nonendodontic lesions misdiagnosed as apical periodontitis lesions: series of case reports and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to analyze cases referred from a reference service in oral pathology that were initially misdiagnosed as periapical lesions of endodontic origin and to perform a review of the literature regarding lesions located in the apical area of teeth with a nonendodontic source. METHODS: A survey was made of clinical cases derived from the service of oral pathology from 2002 to 2012. The pertinent literature was also reviewed using ScienceDirect and PubMed databases. The lesions were grouped into benign lesions mimicking endodontic periapical lesions (BLMEPLs), malignant

Recurring gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia in two Russian brothers.

Two Russian brothers presented with recurring benign facial bone tumors and progressive limb bowing. The association of fibro-osseous jawbone lesions and long-bone bowing with cortical thickening suggested the diagnosis of gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia, in the absence of arguments in favor of fibrous dysplasia. Gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia is a rare autonomic dominant syndrome due to a mutation of the TMEM16E gene. The extreme and recurring phenotype of these two patients illustrates the variable expressivity of this disease. Differential diagnosis with other benign facial bone tumors is discussed.
