Functional measures, inflammatory markers and endothelin-1 as predictors of 360-day survival in centenarians.

Centenarians represent a rapidly growing population. To better characterize this specific age group, we have performed a cross-sectional study to observe associations between functional measures and a range of biochemical markers, including inflammatory markers and their significance as predictors of 360-day survival. Medical history and physical and functional assessment (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Katz Index (activities of daily living, ADL) and Barthel Index (Barthel Index) of Activities of Daily Living, and Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (Lawton IADL)) were

Centenarian Mortality Rate During COVID-19: Protocol for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Marked by high mortality rates on a global scale, with disease mortality being notably focused among older adults, the COVID-19 pandemic has become a significant health crisis. Despite the numerous publications on COVID-19 mortality among older adults, there is still a gap in knowledge when considering centenarians, as there is no systematic review and meta-analysis that summarizes COVID-19 mortality in centenarians globally. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically review and synthesize global evidence on COVID-19 mortality rates among centenarians and the population of older

Mortality causes and health spending by gender and health conditions in octogenarians, nonagenarians and centenarians in Colombia.

This document determines the causes of mortality (2008-2022) and calculate per capita health expenditure (2013-2021) in octogenarians, nonagenarians and centenarians in the Colombian population, considering year, gender and age group. For this nationwide retrospective descriptive observational study, epidemiological regions, urban/rural areas and morbidities were also studied. A mean of 75,552 deaths was observed from 2008 to 2022. Deaths were higher due to ischemic heart disease, COVID-19, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer, and cerebrovascular diseases in the oldest old Colombian

Mechanical thrombectomy in centenarians for the treatment of acute stroke: Report of 4 patients and review of the literature.

Mechanical thrombectomy is widely used for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke secondary to intracranial large vessel occlusion and current guidelines do not impose an upper age limit for the procedure, however, the latest review of the literature on this subject in English reports only 6 centenarians who have undergone cerebral thrombectomy. In this largest series to date, we present 4 additional centenarians (age 100 or older) who underwent endovascular treatment for acute intracranial large vessel occlusion. Three patients were functionally independent prior to stroke, while one had a pr

Mildred T. Stahlman: a centenarian who pioneered modern scientific neonatal intensive care.

Neonatology pioneer Mildred (Millie) T. Stahlman celebrated her 100th birthday on July 31, 2022. Her distinguished career at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, is reviewed to commemorate this milestone. Stahlman was arguably the first to establish a modern neonatal intensive care unit in 1961, successfully utilizing negative pressure ventilation and umbilical arterial and venous catheters to monitor blood gasses and pH levels. She received early invaluable training in newborn physiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, under John Lind and Petter Karlberg, a

Centenarians have a diverse gut virome with the potential to modulate metabolism and promote healthy lifespan.

Distinct gut microbiome ecology may be implicated in the prevention of aging-related diseases as it influences systemic immune function and resistance to infections. Yet, the viral component of the microbiome throughout different stages in life remains unexplored. Here we present a characterization of the centenarian gut virome using previously published metagenomes from 195 individuals from Japan and Sardinia. Compared with gut viromes of younger adults (>18 yr) and older individuals (>60 yr), centenarians had a more diverse virome including previously undescribed viral genera, such as viruse

Higher ATM expression in lymphoblastoid cell lines from centenarian compared with younger women.

With increased life expectancies in developed countries, cancer rates are becoming more common among the elderly. Cancer is typically driven by a combination of germline and somatic mutations accumulating during an individual's lifetime. Yet, many centenarians reach exceptionally old age without experiencing cancer. It was suggested that centenarians have more robust DNA repair and mitochondrial function, allowing improved maintenance of DNA stability. In this study, we applied real-time quantitative PCR to examine the expression of ATM in lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) from 15 healthy femal

Successful treatment of a centenarian with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using convalescent plasma.

BACKGROUND: Because treatment options for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are very limited, the use of convalescent plasma has bee explored. CASE PRESENTATION AND TREATMENT: A male centenarian with cough and dyspnea for 2 months was diagnosed with COVID-19. Without effective treatments and with the increased risks of antiviral therapy for the elderly, this patient was given convalescent plasma. The viral load, complete blood count, inflammatory indicators, vital signs, and clinical symptoms were observed before and after COVID-19 convalescent plasma transfusion. RESULTS: After convalesce

Cognition and psychopathology in nonagenarians and centenarians living in geriatric nursing homes in Switzerland: a focus on anosognosia.

BACKGROUND: The number of nonagenarians and centenarians is rising dramatically, and many of them live in nursing homes. Very little is known about psychiatric symptoms and cognitive abilities other than memory in this population. This exploratory study focuses on anosognosia and its relationship with common psychiatric and cognitive symptoms. METHODS: Fifty-eight subjects aged 90 years or older were recruited from geriatric nursing homes and divided into five groups according to Mini-Mental State Examination scores. Assessment included the five-word test, executive clock-drawing task, lexica

Characteristics, outcomes and complications among nonagenarians and centenarians admitted to intensive care: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Nonagenarians and centenarians, compared with other age groups, often exhibit distinct physiological characteristics and a higher prevalence of comorbidities, thus further complicating their care in intensive care unit (ICU) settings. Despite the increasing number of such patients being admitted to ICUs, comprehensive research and studies on their characteristics, outcomes and complications during their ICU stays remain lacking. This scoping review will comprehensively address the following question: What are the characteristics, outcomes, complications and mortality rates among

Demographic, phenotypic, and genetic characteristics of centenarians in Okinawa and Honshu, Japan: Part 2 Honshu, Japan.

The scope and purpose of this review was to summarize the aims, methods, findings, and future of centenarian and (semi)-supercentenarian studies in Japan, particularly those from our own interdisciplinary laboratory. Medically, approximately 97% of centenarians contract chronic diseases including hypertension and gastrointestinal disease; however, they present with few cardiovascular risk factors. The low prevalence of diabetes mellitus and carotid atherosclerotic plaques is peculiarities of centenarians, which could be associated with high adiponectin levels. While conducting the Tokyo centen

Preserved mitochondrial ribosomal protein gene expression marks a youthful transcriptional state in Chinese nonagenarians and centenarians.

A youthful molecular profile reflects attenuated aging and preserved health in advanced age. Long-lived individuals (LLIs) show youthful patterns in DNA methylation and gut microbiota, yet their transcriptional trajectories remain undercharacterized. We analyze transcriptomes from 811 LLIs and 940 younger controls (YCs) to map transcriptional aging trajectories. Clocks trained on YCs reveal that LLIs possess markedly younger transcriptional ages than expected. We identify gene clusters deviating from YC-derived aging trajectories in LLIs, notably eight mitochondrial ribosomal protein genes (mR

Sarcopenia index as a prognostic indicator of mortality rates in community-dwelling centenarians: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: With global population aging rapidly, centenarians underscore the urgency of understanding their health trajectory and mortality determinants. Identifying reliable and accessible prognostic indicators of mortality rates, and exploring the influence of muscle health on healthy longevity, remain critical unmet needs. Traditional sarcopenia assessment tools including dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) are costly and poorly accessible in the primary care. Sarcopenia index (SI), calculated from routine blood biochemical indicators, emerges as a promising low-cost alternative. This s
