SSU rDNA characterization of lymnaeid snails transmitting human fascioliasis in South and Central America.

The small subunit (18S) rRNA gene sequences of the lymnaeid morphs I and II (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Basommatophora: Lymnaeidae) transmitting human fascioliasis in the high endemic zone of the northern Bolivian Altiplano and of Lymnaea cubensis from Mexico and Guadeloupe island (Caribbean) have been obtained by direct polymerase chain reaction PCR cycle sequencing and silver staining methods and compared to that of the 6 most common European Lymnaeidae species. Results allow us to establish definitively the distinction between the lymnaeids from the northern Bolivian Altiplano and L. cubensis. L

Benchmarking female breast cancer survival in africa, Central and South america, and asia (SURVCAN-3).

BACKGROUND: In limited-resource settings with high cancer mortality, conditional survival which is the probability of surviving given on survival after a certain period of time since diagnosis, can provide a patient-centred and clinically relevant prognosis indicator. We aimed to benchmark breast cancer prognosis using conditional survival estimates in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia. METHODS: We included data for 197,766 females with breast cancer diagnosed in 2008-2012, from 53 population-based cancer registries with at least 3 years of follow-up across 22 countries. We estimate

Phylogenetic and genetic population analyses of Amblyomma ovale (Parasitiformes: Ixodidae) from Brazil and Central America.

Amblyomma ovale is a widespread hard tick in Neotropics and it is an important vector of pathogens, particularly Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic rainforest, which causes a spotted fever illness in humans. Adult ticks primarily parasitize medium and large mammals, such as carnivores, while larvae and nymphs feed on small mammals and occasionally on birds. In Brazil, the species is found in all six major biomes (Amazon, Atlantic forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pantanal, Pampa), and is generally found in humid, forested areas. Despite its broad range, large-scale genetic studies have been lacking.

Aspirin Use Is Protective Against Gastric Cancer in a High-Incidence Region of Central America.

PURPOSE: Gastric cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Central America, where Helicobacter pylori infection is highly prevalent. This study aimed to assess the association between regular use of aspirin (ASA) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the risk of gastric adenocarcinoma in this high-incidence region. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with 1067 incident cases of gastric cancer and 1745 controls. Helicobacter pylori and CagA status were evaluated for 1009 cases and 1557 controls. Demographic, lifestyle, and ASA/NSAID use data were collected v

Understanding transmission risk and predicting environmental suitability for Mayaro Virus in Central and South America.

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is a mosquito-borne Alphavirus that is widespread in South America. MAYV infection often presents with non-specific febrile symptoms but may progress to debilitating chronic arthritis or arthralgia. Despite the pandemic threat of MAYV, its true distribution remains unknown. The objective of this study was to clarify the geographic distribution of MAYV using an established risk mapping framework. This consisted of generating evidence consensus scores for MAYV presence, modeling the potential distribution of MAYV in select countries across Central and South America, and estim

First report of imported canine visceral leishmaniasis cases in Panama, Central America: Public health implications.

According to the last leishmaniasis report from the Pan American Health Organization (2021) so far Panama is considered free of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Although the presence of potential vectors and reservoirs involved in the VL transmission cycle have been described in some rural regions of the country, no cases have been reported in humans and domestic or wild animals. Dogs play an important role in the urban transmission of VL; therefore, it is important to detect possible cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in the country. In this sense, this study reports for the first time t

Th17 lymphocytes in atypical cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi in Central America.

Skin lesions in nonulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL) caused by Leishmania (L.) infantum chagasi are characterized by a mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate in the dermis, which is composed mainly of lymphocytes, followed by macrophages, few plasma cells and epithelioid granulomas with mild tissue parasitism. Previous studies have shown that the main population of lymphocytes present in the dermal infiltrate is CD8+ T cells, followed by CD4+ T cells, which are correlated with IFN-γ+ cells. To improve the knowledge of cellular immune responses in NUCL, skin biopsies were submitted to immun

A PCR-RFLP Technique to Assess the Geographic Origin of Plasmodium falciparum Strains in Central America.

The elimination of malaria requires strengthening diagnosis and offering adequate and timely treatment. Imported cases of falciparum malaria represent a major challenge for pre-elimination areas, such as Central America, where chloroquine and primaquine continue to be used as first-line treatment. The pfs47 gene has been previously described as a precise molecular marker to track the geographic origin of the parasite. The aim of this study was to design a simple and low-cost technique using the polymorphic region of pfs47 to assess the geographic origin of P. falciparum strains. A PCR-RFLP tec

[Introduction of onchocerciasis in Central America: the role of the French expeditionary corps to Mexico (1861-1867)].

Close relationships between American and African strains (from savanna) of onchocerciasis have been confirmed by biochemical analysis. It is admitted that the parasite could have been introduced by slave trade. But in Mexico, Torroela supported the hypothesis that onchocerciasis was introduced by Nubian soldiers of the French troops between 1861 and 1867. Some of the 600 soldiers of the Egyptian bataillon, included in the French expeditionnary corps, could have been onchocerciasis carriers. But these troops caserned in Vera Cruz remained in the littoral plain and have not been in contact with

Adult immunization practices, challenges and opportunities in Central America and the Caribbean: Advisory board proceedings.

As individuals age, they become increasingly prone to infectious diseases, many of which are vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Adult immunization has become a public health priority in the modern era, yet VPDs vaccination rates for adults are low worldwide. In Central America and Caribbean, national recommendations and vaccination practices in adults differ across countries, and adult vaccination coverage data are limited. An advisory board comprised infectious disease experts, pulmonologists, geriatricians, occupational health, and public health professionals for Central America and Domini

Introduction of HPV testing for cervical cancer screening in Central America: The Scale-Up project.

The Scale-Up project introduced vaginal self-sampling and low-cost human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as the primary approach for cervical cancer screening in selected public health centers in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. We evaluate the country-specific accomplishments in screening: target-coverage, triage, and treatment. Between 2015 and 2018, cervical cancer screening was offered to women at least 30 years of age. Triage of HPV-positive women was based on visual inspection with acetic acid or Pap. Aggregated data included total women screened, use of self-sampling, age, time elapsed

Clinical and Immunological Features of Human Leishmania (L.) infantum-Infection, Novel Insights Honduras, Central America.

Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum is the etiological agent of both American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) and non-ulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL) in Honduras. Although AVL is the most severe clinical form of infection, recent studies have shown that human immune response to parasite infection can result in a clinical-immunological spectrum. The overall prevalence rate of infection and clinical-immunological profiles of the L. (L.) infantum infection in Amapala municipality, South Honduras was determined. We examined 576 individuals with diagnosis based on combined ELISA (IgG/IgM) and DT

Trypanosoma rangeli genotypes association with Rhodnius prolixus and R. pallescens allopatric distribution in Central America.

Previous kDNA polymorphism-based reports have revealed the existence of two Trypanosoma rangeli genotypes (KP1+ and KP1-): SL and SSU rRNA gene polymorphism-based studies have revealed that five genotypes (A-E) are distributed throughout different Latin-American countries. Some evidence has shown that the genotypes' biogeographical distribution is associated with sympatric Rhodnius species. 12 T. rangeli isolates from humans and reservoirs from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama were characterised by kDNA and mini-exon gene intergene spacer analysis and compared to 12 prev
