Morphological peculiarities of the deep infratemporal fossa in advanced age.

The main osseous landmarks of the border area between the infratemporal fossa and the para- and retro pharyngeal space are the sphenoidal spine and the pterygoid and styloid processes, and the styloid vagina. These landmarks, as well as some vascular anomalies, were studied in order to illustrate the variable anatomy, which is encountered in the surgical lateral transzygomatic infratemporal fossa approach. Hundred well-preserved human skull bases were examined. The deep infratemporal fossa was dissected into 54 halves of fixed cadaveric head and neck specimens of both sexes. Dry skull specimen

Preadult stage parasites and multiple timed exposure to infective larvae are involved in development of limb edema in Brugia malayi-infected Indian leaf monkeys (Presbytis entellus).

The pathogenesis of filarial limb edema is not known. The role of parasitological variables and parasite-mediated phenomena in the development of limb edema was investigated in the Presbytis entellus-Brugia malayi model. Infection was initiated with subcutaneous inoculation of infective third-stage larvae (L(3)), and the animals were reexposed to different doses of L(3) at the prepatent, patent, and diminishing microfilaremia (0 to 5% of peak microfilaremia count) stages of infection. A large L(3) inoculum size and repeated inoculation in the ankle region during the prepatent, patent, and dimi

Biodiversity of protists and nematodes in the wild nonhuman primate gut.

Documenting the natural diversity of eukaryotic organisms in the nonhuman primate (NHP) gut is important for understanding the evolution of the mammalian gut microbiome, its role in digestion, health and disease, and the consequences of anthropogenic change on primate biology and conservation. Despite the ecological significance of gut-associated eukaryotes, little is known about the factors that influence their assembly and diversity in mammals. In this study, we used an 18S rRNA gene fragment metabarcoding approach to assess the eukaryotic assemblage of 62 individuals representing 16 NHP spe

Development of a nonhuman primate model for fetoscopy.

Twenty-four fetoscopy procedures were performed on 22 monkeys (19 Macaca mulatta, one M. fascicularis, two Erythrocebus patas) with gestational ages ranging from 66 to 145 days. Insertion of the fetoscope without ultrasound guidance was easy in 14 and difficult in ten procedures. Amniotic fluid exchange with normal saline, to improve visualization, was successful in eight of 13 procedures. Fetal blood sampling was successful in four of nine attempts. Nine monkeys aborted within 17 days of the fetoscopy, the remaining 13 went to term or were used in other research protocols. Major complications

Genetic evidence of a strong functional constraint of neurotrypsin during primate evolution.

Neurotrypsin is one of the extra-cellular serine proteases that are predominantly expressed in the brain and involved in neuronal development and function. Mutations in humans are associated with autosomal recessive non-syndromic mental retardation (MR). We studied the molecular evolution of neurotrypsin by sequencing the coding region of neurotrypsin in 11 representative non-human primate species covering great apes, lesser apes, Old World monkeys and New World monkeys. Our results demonstrated a strong functional constraint of neurotrypsin that was caused by strong purifying selection during

Biochemical studies in Presbytis cristata infected with subperiodic Brugia malayi.

The Presbytis cristata--Brugia malayi model, now established as a reliable non-human primate model for the experimental screening of potential filaricides, was monitored at monthly intervals for changes in the liver and renal function tests and also for alkaline phosphatase levels during infection. Animals infected with 200-400 infective larvae became patient at 50-90 days post-infection and geometric mean microfilarial counts were above 1000 per ml from the fourth month onwards. There were no significant changes in the biochemical parameters monitored throughout the period of observation. Thi

Experimental leprosy in three species of monkeys.

Eleven mangabey monkeys inoculated with Mycobacterium leprae developed lepromatous-type leprosy. Nine of the mangabeys were inoculated with M. leprae isolated from a mangabey with naturally acquired lepromatous leprosy. Immune function was depressed in some of these animals after dissemination of the disease. Two mangabeys developed lepromatous leprosy after inoculation with human M. leprae passaged in an armadillo. Three rhesus and three African green monkeys inoculated with mangabey-derived M. leprae also developed lepromatous leprosy. Mangabeys may be the first reported nonhuman primate mod

Full length genomes of genotype IIIA Hepatitis A Virus strains (1995-2008) from India and estimates of the evolutionary rates and ages.

With the changing epidemiology, outbreaks of Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) have been reported from different parts of India. To characterize HAV strains circulating in India (1995-2008), 6 full genome sequences of the predominant genotype, IIIA, were determined. Further, applying the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) framework to the full genomes of Indian HAV strains as well as other global strains (human as well as simian), we derived the mean nucleotide substitution rate and evolutionary timescales with emphasis on the age of genotype III and IIIA strains. The genomic length of all the 6 H

Non-ABO blood group systems phenotyping in non-human primates for blood banking laboratory and xenotransplantation.

Some biomedical research procedures, such as organ xenotransplantation, usually require intensive hemotherapy. Knowledge of the whole phenotype of blood donor and graft could be useful in the field of xenotransplantation. Human and simian-type categories of blood groups have been established and they can be tested by standard methods used for human blood grouping. The aim of this work was to study the incidence of non-ABO blood group systems in different species of non-human primates, which are employed in biomedical research. The phenotype of Rh, Lewis, Kidd, Kell, MNSs, Lutheran, P and Duffy

Immune responses in normal Indian langur monkeys (Presbytis entellus)--a primate model for visceral leishmaniasis.

The Indian langur monkey (Presbytis entellus) is an experimental host for a range of human diseases and for the assessment of vaccine candidate antigens to some common parasitic infections. This experimental host is particularly suitable for the follow-up of immunological responses. To understand some of the mechanism that underlies the defense against experimental pathogens there is a need of the basic knowledge on antibody and cell mediated immune responses. In the present study 25 naïve monkeys were subjected to for assessment of their antibody responses to various human parasitic antigens

Transmission of human spongiform encephalopathies to experimental animals: comparison of the chimpanzee and squirrel monkey.

The agents of kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have been consistently transmitted from patients with those diseases to chimpanzees and squirrel monkeys, as well as to other new-world primates, with average incubation periods of two or three years. No other animals have been found so consistently susceptible to the agents in human tissues. More rapid and convenient assays for the infectious agents would greatly facilitate research on the spongiform encephalopathies of humans.

Homogeneity among Senegalese strains of yellow fever virus.

A series of 16 yellow fever (YF) viruses isolated from mosquitoes, monkeys and humans in different epidemiological contexts in Senegal and The Gambia between 1976 and 1983, was analyzed by T1 RNase oligonucleotide fingerprints of the genomic 32P-labeled RNA, by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the intracellular virus-specified polypeptides, by peptide mapping of the envelope E glycoprotein and by immunological reactivities with monoclonal antibody fluids (MAF's) against the E glycoprotein. These strains had not been passed in suckling mice and were isolated in Aedes pseudoscutellaris

Genetic characterisation and phylogenetic status of whipworms (Trichuris spp.) from captive non-human primates in China, determined by nuclear and mitochondrial sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Whipworms (Nematoda: Trichuridae), among the most common soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), can cause the socioeconomically important disease trichuriasis in various mammalian hosts including humans and non-human primates. For many years, Trichuris from non-human primates has been assigned to the same species as the one infecting humans Trichuris trichiura. More recently, several molecular reports challenged this assumption following recognition of a Trichuris species complex observed in humans and non-human primates. A refined concept for species limits within Trichuris contribute

Longitudinal humoral immune responses of Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus) to Brugia malayi infection.

Humoral immune responses of the Indian leaf monkey (Presbytis entellus) experimentally infected with Brugia malayi and exhibiting disease manifestations were studied. Microfilaraemia, filaria-specific IgG and circulating immune complexes (CICs) were determined in the monkeys at different time-points after inoculation of B. malayi 3rd-stage larvae. Sera were analysed for recognition pattern of adult parasite antigen molecules by immunoblotting. More than 60% of the infected monkeys developed episodic or persistent limb oedema with or without fever and with low or no microfilaraemia. While both

Circulating antibodies and antigens in Presbytis monkeys infected with the filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti.

Levels of circulating filarial antigen, and humoral antibody to other defined antigenic targets, were measured over the course of experimental infection of three Presbytis cristatus monkeys with Wuchereria bancrofti. Circulating antigen levels, measured with an anti-phosphorylcholine monoclonal antibody, varied widely although all animals were positive for some period of the infection. Circulating antigen levels tended to be inversely related to the titre of anti-phosphorylcholine antibody, and this trend was maintained even following acid dissociation and inactivation of immune complexed host

Fatal infections with Balamuthia mandrillaris (a free-living amoeba) in gorillas and other Old World primates.

Balamuthia mandrillaris is a newly described free-living amoeba capable of causing fatal meningoencephalitis in humans and animals. Because the number of human cases is rapidly increasing, this infection is now considered an important emerging disease by the medical community. A retrospective review of the pathology database for the Zoological Society of San Diego (the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park) for the period July 1965 through December 1994 revealed five cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis, all in Old World primates. The infected animals were a 3-year, 10-month-old female
