The influence of volume expansion with induced hypertension on vessel reactivities, the blood-brain barrier, and cerebral infarction in cats with one-hour occlusion of the middle cerebral artery.

Thirty anesthetized cats were randomly assigned to three groups of 10 cats each: a 10% hydroxyethyl starch-treated group (10% HAES group), a 6% hydroxyethyl starch-treated group (6% HAES group), or a control group. Cerebral pial arterial reactivities were measured by means of intravital microscopic observation through a cranial window. The middle cerebral artery of the cat was clipped for 1 hour using the transorbital approach, 5 hours later Evans blue dye was injected intravenously, and 30 minutes later the animals was killed. Administration of hydroxyethyl starch or saline was started 15 min

Brain volume measured by synthetic magnetic resonance imaging in adult moyamoya disease correlates with cerebral blood flow and brain function.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is characterized by progressive arterial occlusion, causing chronic hemodynamic impairment, which can reduce brain volume. A novel quantitative technique, synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI), can evaluate brain volume. This study aimed to investigate whether brain volume measured with SyMRI correlated with cerebral blood flow (CBF) and brain function in adult MMD. In this retrospective study, 18 adult patients with MMD were included. CBF was measured using iodine-123-N-isopropyl-p-iodoamphetamine single photon emission computed tomography. Cerebrovascular reacti

Cerebral blood volume measurement using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy and histopathological evaluation after hypoxic-ischemic insult in newborn piglets.

The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the cerebral blood volume (CBV) measured by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS) and pathological change of the brain in a hypoxic-ischemic (HI) piglet model. Twenty-one anesthetized newborn piglets, including three sham controls, were studied. An HI event was induced by low inspired oxygen. CBV was measured using TRS (Hamamatsu TRS-10). Data were collected before, during, and 6h after the insult. CBV was calculated as the change from the end of the insult. The piglets were allowed to recover from anesthesia for 6h after th

Cocaine-induced changes in time course of regional cerebral blood volume and transit time as determined by dynamic MR imaging.

We examined cocaine-mediated change in regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and mean transit time (MTT) in central brain structures of rats using functional MR imaging techniques. Changes in MTT and rCBV in animals who had previously been given cocaine depended on the length of time between the last pretreatment injection and the acute injection and seemed to parallel cocaine-mediated changes in extracellular dopamine concentrations.

Abnormal Grey Matter Arteriolar Cerebral Blood Volume in Schizophrenia Measured With 3D Inflow-Based Vascular-Space-Occupancy MRI at 7T.

Metabolic dysfunction and microvascular abnormality may contribute to the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Most previous studies of cerebral perfusion in schizophrenia measured total cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the brain, which reflect the ensemble signal from the arteriolar, capillary, and venular compartments of the microvasculature. As the arterioles are the most actively regulated blood vessels among these compartments, they may be the most sensitive component of the microvasculature to metabolic disturbances. In this study, we adopted the inflow-based vascul

The impact of EPI-based distortion correction of dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI on cerebral blood volume estimation in patients with glioblastoma.

PURPOSE: Relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) from dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC)-MRI is a valuable biomarker in patients with glioblastoma for assessing treatment response and predicting overall survival. DSC-MRI based on echo planar images (EPI) may possess severe geometric distortions from magnetic field inhomogeneities up to the order of centimeters. The aim of this study is to assess how much two readily available EPI-based geometric distortion correction methods, FSL TOPUP and EPIC, affect rCBV values from DSC-MRI in patients with confirmed glioblastoma. METHOD: We used a combin

Automated Quantification of Compartmental Blood Volumes Enables Prediction of Delayed Cerebral Ischemia and Outcomes After Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: The role of hemorrhage volume in risk of vasospasm, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and poor outcomes after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is well established. However, the relative contribution of blood within individual compartments is unclear. We present an automated technique for measuring not only total but also volumes of blood in each major compartment after SAH. METHODS: We trained convolutional neural networks to identify compartmental blood (cisterns, sulci, and ventricles) from baseline computed tomography scans of patients with SAH. We compared automated bloo

High relative cerebral blood volume strongly predicts early neurological improvement and good functional outcome in ischemic stroke patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Despite advancements in mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large vessel occlusion, nearly half of patients with successful recanalization do not achieve good functional outcome (GFO). We aimed to analyze the association between novel perfusion-based biomarkers and prognosis after AIS. CLINICAL RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY: The role of perfusion imaging biomarkers, particularly relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV), as an indicator of tissue-level collateral circulation and a predictor of post-MT clinical trajectory remains insuffic

Effects of a stable enkephalin analogue, (D-Met2,Pro5)-enkephalinamide, and naloxone on cortical blood flow and cerebral blood volume in experimental brain ischemia in anesthetized cats.

The effects of intracarotid injection of the stable enkephalin analogue (D-Met2,Pro5)-enkephalinamide (ENK) and intravenous administration of naloxone on the cerebrocortical blood flow (dye dilution method) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) (photoelectric method) were investigated during unilateral brain ischemia in anesthetized cats. Both parameters were measured simultaneously in the intact and ischemic (middle cerebral artery occluded) hemispheres. An intracarotid injection of ENK 0.5 mg/kg induced a significant increase in cortical vascular resistance and a -87% decrease in cerebrocortical b

Volume-dependent modulation of cerebral cortex Na+,K + -ATPase activity and blood-brain barrier permeability by acute exhaustive exercise in rats.

The Na+,K + -ATPase (NKA) enzyme is crucial for maintaining neuronal excitability, yet its response to acute physical exertion in the central nervous system remains largely unexplored. Here, we report a volume-dependent modulation of NKA activity in the cerebral cortex of rats subjected to a strenuous swimming protocol. A single bout of exhaustive exercise (1 set) significantly decreased total NKA activity and increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability (albumin extravasation) without altering lipid peroxidation. Conversely, repeated exposure (3 sets, 72-h intervals) triggered an acute co

Slab-selective, BOLD-corrected VASO at 7 Tesla provides measures of cerebral blood volume reactivity with high signal-to-noise ratio.

PURPOSE: MRI methods sensitive to functional changes in cerebral blood volume (CBV) may map neural activity with better spatial specificity than standard functional MRI (fMRI) methods based on blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) effect. The purpose of this study was to develop and investigate a vascular space occupancy (VASO) method with high sensitivity to CBV changes for use in human brain at 7 Tesla (T). METHODS: To apply 7T VASO, several high-field-specific obstacles must be overcome, e.g., low contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) due to convergence of blood and tissue T1 , increased functional

Cerebral blood volume combined with amplitude-integrated EEG can be a suitable guide to control hypoxic/ischemic insult in a piglet model.

INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study are to compare two hypoxic/ischemic (H/I) insults using amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG), alone or combined with cerebral blood volume (CBV), as a guide to control hypoxia and to determine which protocol most effectively produces a consistent degree of survivable neuropathological damage in a newborn piglet model of perinatal asphyxia. METHODS: Eighteen piglets were subjected to H/I insult of 20-min low aEEG (LAEEG). After the 20-min, the aEEG group was maintained with low mean arterial blood pressure for 10min. The procedure for the aEEG plus CBV group

Effects of three different doses of a bolus injection of gadodiamide: assessment of regional cerebral blood volume maps in a blinded reader study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reconstruction of first-pass bolus information to derive regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV) maps is commonly performed in many centers; however, various protocols with different doses of paramagnetic contrast injections have been reported. We evaluated the dose dependency of rCBV maps in a brain tumor population by using three different doses of gadodiamide injection to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy in blinded reader sessions. METHODS: Eighty-three patients with intraaxial brain tumors (72 gliomas) were studied at three centers and randomized to receive a bolus

Preoperative tumor cerebral blood flow measured by arterial spin labeling predicts enhancing tumor volume progression in gliomas: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) enables non-invasive quantification of cerebral blood flow (CBF). The preoperative prognostic value of tumor-specific CBF for subsequent enhancing tumor (ET) volume progression in gliomas remains poorly characterized. METHODS: In this study 60 glioma patients (predominantly glioblastoma, WHO grade 4) with preoperative 3T ASL MRI and paired follow-up structural MRI were analyzed. Tumor CBF, surrounding CBF, and whole-brain CBF were quantified from the segmented regions of interest. ET and surrounding non-enhancing FLAIR-hyperintense (SNFH) volume change
