Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD, MIM #248600) is an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder that results in elevation of the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Elevation of BCAA and certain alpha keto-acids is associated with a catabolic state and may result in neurological and developmental delays, feeding problems, and a urine and cerumen odor of maple syrup. Pregnancy is a period of multiple adaptations necessary to support fetal growth and development. Thirty-two cases of dermatophyte infection in the external auditory meatus are reported. The presence of wax is a common finding during ear examination of children and it is one of the main causes of avoidable hearing impairment in children. The objective of this study was to find out the prevalence of wax in ear and evaluate the hearing loss in school-aged children. This is a cross sectional school-based study conducted over a four-year period. Intellectual disability (ID) and hearing loss are frequent comorbid conditions, although otological problems often go unnoticed until picked up by screening. In the hearing program of Special Olympics (SO), athletes with ID are screened for otological problems.
