1 The effect of local elevation of leucocyte cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) content on the continued migration of leucocytes to a site of acute inflammation was studied in the pleural cavity of rats. 2 Leucocyte cyclic AMP levels were elevated by injecting with the irritant into the pleural cavity dibutyryl cyclic AMP alone or with theophylline. 3 The treatments both produced a marked reduction in leucocyte migration into a pleural reaction induced by immediate hypersensitivity, but had no effect on cell numbers in pleurisy induced either by pyrophosphate or urate crystals.

Caenorhabditis elegans shows chemotaxis to various odorants and water-soluble chemoattractants such as NaCl. We describe a patient with incontinentia pigmenti who developed the clinical picture of intestinal Behçet's disease. Diagnosis of Behçet's disease was base on a recurrent genital and oral ulcer and a positive HLA-B51. Impaired neutrophil chemotactic activity and an elevated plasma IL-6 level were found. Chromosomal study revealed no abnormality in the patient or her family. We discuss the possibility that there are common immunological abnormalities in the two syndromes.

Polymorphonuclear cell chemotaxis to secretions of pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains of Trichomonas vaginalis were investigated. Cells from three groups, laboratory workers, patients with urogenital symptoms, and asymptomatic patients attending an antenatal clinic, all showed greater response to secretions of pathogenic strains, when the secretion was dilute. At higher concentrations of secretion, responses to both strains were similar, except in the pregnant group, where increased chemotaxis to pathogenic strains was still evident.
