The optimum time to initiate habitual xylitol gum-chewing for obtaining long-term caries prevention.

Habitual xylitol gum-chewing may have a long-term preventive effect by reducing the caries risk for several years after the habitual chewing has ended. The goal of this report was (1) to determine if sorbitol and sorbitol/xylitol mixtures provide a long-term benefit, and (2) to determine which teeth benefit most from two-year habitual gum-chewing - those erupting before, during, or after habitual gum-chewing. Children, on average 6 years old, chewed gums sweetened with xylitol, sorbitol, or xylitol/sorbitol mixtures. There was a "no-gum" control group. Five years after the two-year program of

Chewing Gum Versus Standard Care for Enhanced Bowel Recovery After Cesarean Section: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background and objective Cesarean sections (CS) are common and occasionally critical surgical procedures. Nausea, vomiting, and postoperative ileus (POI) frequently occur in patients undergoing cesarean delivery with regional anesthesia. These issues affect patient comfort, slow down wound healing, and prolong hospital stays. Studies have employed various strategies to address these challenges. Chewing gum post-surgery is a cost-effective approach to stimulate intestinal movement, promoting early initiation of oral intake, early mobilization, shorter hospital stays, and reduced overall hospita

Effects of caffeinated chewing gum on muscle pain during submaximal isometric exercise in individuals with fibromyalgia.

Physical activity is important to manage symptom of fibromyalgia (FM); however, individuals with FM typically experience augmented muscle pain during exercise. This study examined the effects of caffeinated chewing gum on exercise-induced muscle pain in individuals with FM. This study was conducted with a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design. Twenty-three patients with FM completed a caffeine condition where they consumed a caffeinated chewing gum that contains 100mg of caffeine, and a placebo condition where they consumed a non-caffeinated chewing gum. They completed isometric

Nicotine gum chewing: a novel strategy to shorten duration of postoperative ileus via vagus nerve activation.

Postoperative ileus (POI) is a transit cessation of bowel motility after surgery. Substantial evidences suggest that gum chewing accelerate the recovery of bowel motility after surgery. Perioperative nicotine administration reduces postoperative opioid use and prevents postoperative nausea and vomiting. Nicotine gum chewing combines stimulation of the cephalic-vagal reflex by gum chewing, and activation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway by nicotine administration. We therefore hypothesized that nicotine gum chewing reduces POI and improves patient outcomes such as shortening the len

Improvements in Maximum Bite Force with Gum-Chewing Training in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

No specific methods have been officially proposed for the prevention and improvement of oral hypofunction. Therefore, in this randomized controlled trial, we aimed to develop a gum-chewing training program and determine its effects in older adults. A total of 218 older adults, aged 65-85 years, were randomly allocated to the intervention or control groups. The intervention group chewed the experimental gum daily, whereas the control group consumed the experimental granular food daily. The outcome assessments measured the maximum bite force, occlusal contact areas, oral dryness, tongue pressure

Subjective changes in nasal patency after chewing a menthol-containing gum in patients with olfactory loss.

CONCLUSION: The subjective increase in nasal patency after oral menthol application depends on olfactory function. In patients with relatively low olfactory sensitivity, this effect is small or absent. It was hypothesized that this may also modulate the sensation of nasal blockage. OBJECTIVE: Menthol stimulates the nasal trigeminal nerve, resulting in a subjectively increased nasal airflow and patency without objectively measurable changes. Patients suffering from olfactory impairment also express a reduced nasal trigeminal sensitivity. The aim of this investigation was to examine the effect

Individual responses to encapsulated caffeine and caffeine chewing gum on strength and power in strength-trained males.

BACKGROUND: Liquid-dissolved and encapsulated powder are two popular ways to consume caffeine for performance-enhancing effects. Caffeine in other delivery methods, such as chewing gums, orally dissolvable strips, gels, mouthwashes, energy drinks, and nasal sprays, is believed to be absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream. Inter-individual responses to caffeine's enhancing effects are recognized. The present study examined the inter-individual responses to the acute effects of encapsulated caffeine and caffeinated chewing gum on the lower-body isokinetic and isometric strength and power in

Sugar-free chewing gum's effect on patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis: a meta-analysis of RCTs.

OBJECTIVE: Thirst is a prevalent adverse effect in individuals undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), frequently precipitating complications that impair well-being and quality of life. While no gold-standard therapy is currently available for thirst management in MHD patients, sugar-free chewing gum has been proposed as a low-cost behavioral intervention, though its efficacy requires further validation. This meta-analysis evaluated its impact on thirst, xerostomia, and secondary outcomes (salivary flow rate, interdialysis weight gain [IDWG]). METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO:

An electromyographic study on the sequential recruitment of bilateral sternocleidomastoid and masseter muscle activity during gum chewing.

Mandibular functions are associated with electromyographic activity of the jaw muscles and also the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM). The precise spatiotemporal relation of SCM and masticatory muscles activities during chewing is worthy of investigation. To analyse the sequential recruitment of SCM and masseter activities during chewing as indicated by the spatiotemporal locations of their activity peaks. Jaw movements and bilateral surface electromyographic activity of SCM and masseter were recorded during gum chewing in 20 healthy subjects. The timing order was decided by comparing the lengt

The influence of a hexametaphosphate-containing chewing gum on the wetting ability of salivary conditioning films in vitro and in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: Adsorbed conditioning films of salivary components on dental enamel surfaces or pellicles form the interface between teeth and the oral environment. The wetting ability of salivary conditioning films dictates biological adhesion phenomena such as plaque formation, calcification and staining, and also influences mouth perception through effects on lubricity. This study assessed the effects of hexametaphosphate release from a chewing gum matrix on the wetting ability of salivary conditioning films in vitro and in vivo. METHODOLOGY: Results obtained for hexametaphosphate chewing gum w

The effect of chewing gum on postoperative ileus after laparotomy for gastroduodenal perforations: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged postoperative ileus is linked to a higher risk of additional complications, longer hospital stays, and higher healthcare expenses. There are few randomized controlled trials on the impact of chewing gum on the duration of ileus in patients undergoing emergency surgery, notably those with peritonitis. Compelling evidence from studies on elective procedures demonstrates that chewing gum can lessen the duration of ileus. This trial aimed to examine the effect of chewing gum on the length of the postoperative ileus which develop after laparotomy for gastroduodenal perforation
