The differential diagnosis of child abuse includes osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Mild phenotypes of OI may be misdiagnosed as child abuse. The purpose of this study was to review the experience of families in which OI was misdiagnosed as child abuse. Sixty-one potential cases of misdiagnosis were identified from a lay support organization. Upon review of the medical records, 33 cases were identified with a confirmed diagnosis of OI (skin biopsy or DNA blood test). Twenty-seven adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse participated in a pilot study comprising an 8-week mindfulness meditation-based stress reduction (MBSR) program and daily home practice of mindfulness skills. Three refresher classes were provided through final follow-up at 24 weeks. Assessments of depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and mindfulness, were conducted at baseline, 4, 8, and 24 weeks. At 8 weeks, depressive symptoms were reduced by 65%. Statistically significant improvements were observed in all outcomes post-MBSR, with effect sizes above 1.0.

INTRODUCTION: In Portugal child abuse is a reality, although its true incidence is still unknown.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Retrospective study by consulting child abuse processes of children hospitalized in Paediatric Nursery and Neonatal Special Care Unit of Centro Hospitalar de Setúbal, E.P.E between January 1, 2006 and June 30, 2008. The following variables were studied: sex, age, year of hospitalization, length of stay, type of abuse, aggressor, drug abuse in family; mother's age, entities involved in the process and the applied measures to promote and/or protect.

Vulvitis circumscripta plasmacellularis (VCP) is a rare, benign vulvar disorder that is typically described in adult women. Our case occurred in an 8-year-old girl. The primary diagnostic concern was sexual abuse. VCP may also mimic lichen sclerosus, extramammary Paget's disease, pemphigus vulgaris, fixed drug eruption, squamous cell carcinoma, candidiasis, allergic contact dermatitis, and herpes simplex infection. Evaluation should include a biopsy because the histopathologic features of VCP are distinctive.

While the actual incidence of child abuse has not been determined, the available statistics are grim. The dentist must view himself as a child advocate. Simply treating dental and facial injuries of abused children while ignoring the social needs of the child and family is unacceptable. State laws mandate reporting as well as protect the dentist from civil or criminal liability. Dentistry's contribution in the management of nonaccidental injuries is the recognition of the possibility of physical abuse, the treatment of orofacial injuries and reporting to the appropriate authorities.

Many common genitourinary complaints may be related to sexual abuse. We report five patients referred to a Pediatric Nephrology Clinic who demonstrate some of the symptoms and signs caused by abuse, such as dysuria, genital and urinary tract infections, voiding dysfunction, and genital trauma. Difficulties in eliciting histories are described. Although these genitourinary complaints may be due to a variety of etiologies, sexual abuse should not be overlooked. Suggestions for a management approach are made.

Determining what constitutes true child abuse is not always easy. A child with epidermal nevus and multiple café-au-lait spots was erroneously thought to be a victim of abuse. This report details the features of epidermal nevi. We present these findings with the hope that such misdiagnoses can be avoided in the future.

We report an unusual insight into the impact of an inherited skin disorder on persons and their families through a child abuse evaluation that was concluded by the diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) in a 6-year-old girl. All childhood deaths which occurred in New Mexico during 1974 and 1975 were reviewed. Nine fatal instances of abuse were identified representing the entire spectrum of physical abuse: neglect, abuse in a single episode of injury, repetitive abuse, or sexual abuse. Several cases are summarized. These are unusual either in the distribution of pathologic findings or in the problems encountered in court presentation.
