Ovarian development of the female child and adolescent: I. Morphology.

Ovarian morphology of 180 randomly selected females, aged 8-21, was investigated, utilizing standard sector scanning ultrasound techniques, at -1 year (1 year before menarche), year 0 (menarche) and years +1 to +8 (1-8 years postmenarche). According to strict morphologic criteria, seven ovarian patterns were recognized which varied in dominance with age in reference to menarche. Prior to menarche a multifollicular ovarian pattern (Type 1) dominates which after menarche is substituted by a predominantly active ovarian pattern (Type 5). Approximately 20% of postmenarcheal females do not develop

[Chronic renal insufficiency in the child. Etiology, development and prognosis].

Our study concerned 147 children with chronic renal failure (CRF) (creatinine clearance less than 50 ml/min/1.73 m2). Its goal was to analyse the distribution of primary renal diseases, natural history of renal failure (RF) according to etiology, and long term survival. Renal diseases responsible for RF were: malformations of the urinary tract (38%), glomerular pathology (26%), hereditary renal diseases (20%), isolated renal hypoplasias (11%), and miscellaneous (5%). Corticoresistant nephrosis accounted for 34% of glomerular diseases and nephronophtisis 63% of hereditary renal diseases. On the

Anal Canal Carcinoma in a Child With Disorders of Sex Development.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal in children is rare. To date, the etiology and outcome of this condition have been not fully understood. Here, we report an 11-year-old child with anal canal cancer who had concomitant disorders of sex development. Radiotherapy followed by salvage surgery achieved disease-free survival of 3 years. Since overexpression of cell cycle regulatory protein p16 was immunohistochemically evident in tumor tissue, human papillomavirus infection was considered as a causative factor in the carcinogenesis.

Fluoroquinolone use in a child associated with development of osteochondritis dissecans.

Several aetiological theories have been proposed for the development of osteochondritis dissecans. Cartilage toxicity after fluoroquinolone use has been well documented in vitro. We present a case report of a 10-year-old child who underwent a prolonged 18-month course of ciprofloxacin therapy for chronic urinary tract infections. This patient later developed an osteochondritis dissecans lesion of the medial femoral condyle. We hypothesise that the fluoroquinolone therapy disrupted normal endochondral ossification, resulting in development of osteochondritis dissecans. The aetiology of osteocho

Acute focal bacterial nephritis developed in a healthy child.

Acute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN) is a rare cause of interstitial bacterial nephritis. Ultrasound identifies AFBN as a hypoechogenic and hypoperfused parenchymal lesion, which requires its differentiation from renal abscess and tumor. Hematogenous spread or ascending infection arising from the lower urinary tract is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of AFBN. Herein, a six-year-old healthy male patient, diagnosed using ultrasound and computerized tomography (CT) and treated with intravenous antibiotics, is presented. As a result, AFBN can be seen in healthy children without any hi

Identifying and developing empirically supported child and adolescent treatments.

Child and adolescent therapy outcome research findings attest to the efficacy of a variety of treatments. This article illustrates promising treatments for selected internalizing (anxiety and depression), externalizing (oppositional, and antisocial behavior), and other (obesity and autism) conditions, and for other aims (preparation for medical and dental procedures). Studies in these areas illustrate worthwhile characteristics that can help inform the search for empirically supported treatments. These characteristics include randomized controlled trials, well-described and replicable treatmen

[Consequences of cocaine addiction during pregnancy on the development in the child].

Cocaine facilitates neurotransmitter release from the central nervous system, decreases their re-uptake at the synapse junction level and increases their blood level due to receptors blockade. During pregnancy cocaine inhibits uterine adrenergic beta receptors and easily crosses the placenta, the main obstetrical consequences of overstimulation of the noradrenergic system being miscarriage, retroplacental haematoma, ruptured uterus, short and premature labour. Fetal and neonatal consequences resulting from both a decreased uterine blood flow and a direct effect of cocaine on fetal development

Development of symptomatic Chiari malformation in a child with craniofacial dysmorphism.

We present the case of a 28-month-old child with craniofacial anomalies who presented for evaluation of apnea. The patient had associated symptoms referable to a Chiari malformation and MRI scanning of the head and cervical spine revealed some, but not all, of the anatomical features classically associated with the Chiari II malformation. The child has mid-face hypoplasia and it appeared that his posterior fossa hypertension was partially caused by anterior compression of the brain stem as a result of the malformation at the base of the skull. The patient responded dramatically to posterior fo

Bahir Dar Child Development Cross-Sectional Study, Ethiopia: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Foundational preacademic skills are crucial for academic success and serve as predictors of socioeconomic status, income and access to healthcare. However, there is a gap in our understanding of neurodevelopmental patterns underlying preacademic skills in children across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). It is essential to identify primary global and regional factors that drive children's neurodevelopment in LMICs. This study aims to characterise the typical development of healthy children and factors that influence child development in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. METHODS

Stress Biomarkers and Child Development in Young Children in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Hundreds of millions of children in low- and middle-income countries are exposed to chronic stressors, such as poverty, poor sanitation and hygiene, and sub-optimal nutrition. These stressors can have physiological consequences for children and may ultimately have detrimental effects on child development. This study explores associations between biological measures of chronic stress in early life and developmental outcomes in a large cohort of young children living in rural Bangladesh. METHODS: We assessed physiologic measures of stress in the first two years of life using measure

Antidepressant exposure in pregnancy and child sensorimotor and visuospatial development.

Motor development underlies many aspects of education and learning. There has been uncertainty about the impact of exposure of antidepressant medication in pregnancy on child motor outcomes. This paper examines whether exposure to antidepressants in utero increases the risk of poorer motor development in two areas: sensorimotor and visuospatial processing. Data were obtained from 195 women and children across 3 groups: women with untreated depression in pregnancy, women treated with antidepressants and control women. Data were collected across pregnancy, postpartum and until 4 years for mother

The effect of iodine deficiency during pregnancy on child development.

It is well known that severe iodine deficiency during pregnancy may cause impaired brain development in the child, with effects on cognitive and motor function, hearing and speech. Whether mild-to-moderate deficiency also affects neurological development is less well known, but in the past decade a number of observational studies have been conducted to answer this question and these studies are reviewed in this article. The picture is now emerging that even mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency during pregnancy may be associated with subtle impairments in cognition and school performance, althoug

Air pollution during pregnancy and lung development in the child.

Air pollution exposure has increased extensively in recent years and there is considerable evidence that exposure to particulate matter can lead to adverse respiratory outcomes. The health impacts of exposure to air pollution during the prenatal period is especially concerning as it can impair organogenesis and organ development, which can lead to long-term complications. Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy affects respiratory health in different ways. Lung development might be impaired by air pollution indirectly by causing lower birth weight, premature birth or disturbed development o
