METHODS: This study was conducted to assess the impact of maternal influenza infection on birth outcomes and long-term influence on infants by merging the Korea National Health Insurance (KNHI) claims database and National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children (NHSP-IC). Mother-offspring pairs were categorized by maternal influe

Cervical cancer is the most common disease among Thai women. The cervical cancer mortality rate has increased in the previous decade. Therefore, this cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the factors associated with cervical cancer screening adherence. Stratified sampling with the proportional to size method was used to select registered women aged 30-60 years. Of the 700 self-administered questionnaires distributed during July and September of 2012, 675 were returned, resulting in a response rate of 96.2%. Approximately 65.4% of the women were considered to be adherent to cervical ca

METHODS: From the inpatient databases of the Taiwan National Health Insurance program, we identified subjects who had an initial hospitalization with moyamoya disease and had been underwent cerebral angiography as incidence cas

Sports-related craniofacial injuries account for 10% to 42% of facial fractures in the US pediatric population, with the incidence of injury peaking at ages 6 to 7 and 12 to 14. The National Survey of Children's Health reported ~5.6 million children between the ages of 6 and 17 participated in baseball in 2021. National Electronic Injury Surveillance System reported 861,456 injuries resulting from baseball and 511,117 injuries resulting from softball in 2021, with ~500,000 of those injuries being to the face/head/neck. While participation in baseball and other youth sports has tremendous physi

Issues related to reimbursement for time and effort expended in providing behavior management services for children often result in confusion and frustration for the parent and practitioner. Multiple medical and dental insurance plans within a state or region frequently lack a common set of definitions that are fundamental in interpreting and applying contract language. Ambiguities and inconsistencies in state and federal programs and regulatory structures, as well as budget concerns, only exacerbate the problem. This paper reviews issues of third-party payment associated with dental care for

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a serious public health crisis in the United States, affecting millions of children annually and is associated with significant, long-term physical and psychological consequences. Family-based behavioral interventions have been shown to be effective in improving obesity-related outcomes in pediatric populations. However, there is limited insight into how adult participation in medical weight management programs may impact household health behaviors. This study explores parent perception of the impact of participation in weight management programs on child healt

Vaccines are considered as a therapeutic area for children; the scientific community focuses mainly on managing chronic disease when it comes to adults. There currently is an increase in the burden of vaccine preventable illnesses in adults. Adult vaccination has been shown to dramatically increase the health and quality of life of older populations. Therefore, adult vaccinations need to be approached as a public health issue, similar to smoking cessation programs, for example. According to the Kenya Non-Communicable Diseases and injuries poverty commission report, 2018. Kenya has a high perce

BACKGROUND: A recent Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation report evaluated the four-year Strong Start for Mothers and Newborns Initiative, which sought to improve maternal and newborn outcomes through exploration of three enhanced, evidence-based care models. This paper reports the socio-demographic characteristics, care processes, and outcomes for mothers and newborns engaged in care with American Association of Birth Centers (AABC) sites.
METHODS: The authors examined data for 6424 Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) beneficiaries in birth center care who gave birt

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 and is potentially preventable through vaccination. This study estimated the incidence of juvenile-onset RRP before the implementation of the national HPV vaccination program in Korea.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using claims data provided by a mandatory insurance program to estimate the incidence of RRP and associated healthcare use. Patients with juvenile RRP were defined as those aged ≤12 years with ≥2 admissions or ≥2 outpatient visits during which they received the Inter

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The incidence of congenital heart disease (CHD) and severe CHD is 13.08 and 1.51/1000 live births, respectively, in Taiwan, which has had national health insurance since 1995 and child health indices similar to those in the US. This study sought to further elucidate the fatality of CHD patients and their survival from a national database.
METHODS: From the national health insurance database 2000-2010, we retrieved data from CHD patients who were diagnosed at age <6 years. The survival status at discharge was ascertained for estimation of survival.
RESULTS: In total, 18,84

This study aimed to identify the risk factors for obesity in five-year-old children using data from the database of the Korean National Health Insurance Service. We identified 26,047 children who underwent the sixth screening (at age 5) from the 2017 National Health Screening Program for Infant and Children and for whom data from the fourth screening (at age 3) database and the mothers' health screening and eligibility database were available. To identify the risk factors of obesity, odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated by a hierarchical multiple logistic regression. Female

OBJECTIVE: Increases in the proportion of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits due to mental illness (MI) or intentional self-harm (ISH) in early months of the COVID-19 pandemic have been documented. Less is known about hospitalizations, or trends during later months of the pandemic. This study assessed changes in MI/ISH-related ED visits and hospitalizations among enrollees in Alabama's Children's Health Insurance Program, ALL Kids, during the pandemic.
METHODS: Administrative claims data from ALL Kids, were used for enrollees aged 6-17 from 2017 to 2022. The study-period was divided i

Congenital and infantile (CI) cataract is one of the most important and preventable cause of blindness in children, but the incidence has not been studied in Korea. We collected data from the national claims database of the National Health Insurance Service of Korea from 2002 through 2019. We identified children who underwent cataract surgery within the age of 5 years, and cumulative incidence rates were calculated for each of the three age criteria. 989 patients out of 4,221,459 births underwent surgery with CI cataract during the period. The cumulative incidence rates per 10,000 births were

Parents of school-age children are increasingly claiming nonmedical exemptions to refuse vaccinations required for school entry. The resultant unvaccinated pockets in many areas of the country have been linked with outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Many states are now focused on reducing rates of nonmedical exemptions by making exemption processes more restrictive or burdensome for the exemptor. These strategies, however, pose ethical problems and may ultimately be inadequate. A shift to strategies that raise the financial liabilities of exemptors may lead to better success and prove

BACKGROUND: Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in Laos requires a financing system that supports equitable access to essential services, especially for underserved groups. The National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, integrating prior social and community-based programs, provides coverage for essential services and reduces out-of-pocket costs. Understanding socioeconomic factors shaping enrollment is critical to avoid policies that unintentionally reinforce inequities.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data from 2,138 women with children aged 0-23 mont
