Background/Objectives: Patients with physical disabilities, like cerebral palsy, the most common movement disorder in childhood, can benefit from instrumental therapy using piano. Playing the piano promotes the interaction between different brain regions and integrates motor skills, sensory skills, musical hearing, and emotions. A pilot music study examined the effects of six months of piano lessons on hand motor skills and musical hearing in groups of children with motor disabilities. Methods: The allocation to the group was not randomized. Various tests, including the standardized Box and Bl

BACKGROUND: Creating a supportive environment for the health and well-being of children with disabilities is essential to enhancing their quality of life and promoting positive outcomes for families and society. In South Korea, children with disabilities face numerous structural and social challenges that threaten their well-being and lower their life satisfaction. This study aimed to examine the factors affecting life satisfaction among school-attending children with disabilities aged 19 years or younger in South Korea, using a framework based on the social determinants of health.

Globally, around 1 in 10 children aged 0-17 years have moderate-to-severe disabilities. The aquatic environment provides hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics that make exercise and therapy feasible for children and adolescents with disabilities. The objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to the use of aquatic therapy in children and adolescents with disabilities. The eligibility criteria were as follows: participants-children and/or adolescents with disabilities aged from 6 to 18 years old; concept-aquatic therapy interventions; co

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, there are 55 million people living in extreme poverty. People with disabilities are doubly impacted by low income and the presence of the disability. The Continuous Cash Benefit Program (BPC) is an aid granted by the Brazilian federal government to people who attest to the condition of disability as an impediment to a life on an equal basis with other individuals. Requests to BPC are made to the national competence body that carries out an expert medical and social assessment, by means of an instrument that determines the degree of the disability. Our objective was to an

BACKGROUND: Participation in daily activities is expressed as a human right. Full participation of children with disabilities in daily activities creates optimal opportunities for learning and development. Previous studies have focused primarily on proxy ratings of participation of children with intellectual disabilities in daily activities. However, little is known about how the children rate barriers and facilitators to their participation in everyday activities.
OBJECTIVES: To identify barriers to and facilitators for everyday activities as experienced by children with intellectual disabil

The use of psychotropic medication in children is increasing worldwide. Children with developmental disabilities seem to be prescribed these medications at a higher rate compared to their non-disabled peers. Little is known about prescribing in non-Western, middle-income studies. In Iran, the file records of 1133 children, aged 2 to 17 years, assessed as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or an intellectual disability (ID) in Tehran City and Province from 2005 to 2019 were collated, and information from parental reports of medications was extracted. Upwards of 80% of children with ASD and 5

BACKGROUND: A specific learning disability comes with a cluster of deficits in the neurocognitive domain. Phonological processing deficits have been the core of different types of specific learning disabilities. In addition to difficulties in phonological processing and cognitive deficits, children with specific learning disability (SLD) are known to have deficits in more innate non-language-based skills like musical rhythm processing.
OBJECTIVES: This paper reviews studies in the area of musical rhythm perception in children with SLD. An attempt was made to throw light on beneficial effects

This study aims to compare anxiety and depression among male and female Chinese children with and without reading disabilities (RDs) and to examine the diverse impacts of anxiety and depression on children's reading comprehension. A total of 132 Chinese children from third to sixth grade living in Taiwan were recruited; half had RD, and the other half were typically developing children. Our results from the first analysis revealed that the anxiety level of female children with RD was significantly higher than that of the other three groups of participants, while the depression level of typical

BACKGROUND: Pitch perception and pitch matching may link to individual reading skills.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined pitch perception and pitch matching tasks in children with learning disabilities to determine whether there was any connection between these tests and the reading fluency in these children.
METHOD: The study used different types of pitch discrimination tests and reading fluency tests to compare the two groups.
RESULTS: Results indicated that the accuracy of pitch discrimination and reading fluency was significantly different in these children with learning disabilitie

PURPOSES: Physical activity (PA) is important for the development of children with disabilities, but rarely does this population meet the recommended standards. Schools are salient locations for PA, but little is known about how specific school settings affect the PA of children with diverse disabilities. We assessed PA and sedentary time (ST) of children with disabilities in three school settings (physical education, recess, lunchtime).
METHODS: Participants included 259 children from 13 Hong Kong special schools for five primary disabilities: visual impairments, hearing impairments, physica

BACKGROUND: Obesity prevalence is increased in children with developmental disabilities, specifically in children with spina bifida and Down syndrome. Energy expenditure, a critical aspect of weight management, has been extensively studied in the typically developing population, but not adequately studied in children with developmental disabilities.
OBJECTIVE: Determine energy expenditure, fat-free mass and body fat percentile and the impact of these findings on recommended caloric intake in children with spina bifida and Down syndrome.
METHODS/MEASURES: This pilot study included 36 children

OBJECTIVE: The quality of primary care delivered to Medicaid-insured children with disabilities (CWD) is unknown. We used the newly validated CWD algorithm (CWDA) to examine CWD prevalence among Medicaid enrollees 1 to 18 years old, primary care quality for CWD, and differences in primary care quality for CWD and non-CWD.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study using 2008 Medicaid Analytic eXtract claims data from 9 states, including children with at least 11 months of enrollment (N = 2,671,922 enrollees). We utilized CWDA to identify CWD and applied 12 validated or endorsed pediatric quality measures

Consistently with the idea that numbers and space interact with each other, the present paper aimed to investigate the impact of non-verbal learning disabilities (NVLD) on spatial and numerical processing. In order to do so, 15 NVLD and 15 control children were required to perform different spatial (the line bisection and Simon tasks) and numerical tasks (the number bisection, number-to-position and numerical comparison tasks). In every task, NVLD children presented lower accuracy scores than the control group. While both groups manifested similar pseudo-neglect and Simon effects, they however

AIM: Although cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection, existing research has not provided us with a full picture of how this can affect children in the future. The aim of this case-control study was to evaluate disabilities in a well-defined group of children with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, who had been fitted with cochlear implants because of severe hearing impairment.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary team assessed 26 children with congenital CMV infection for balance difficulties, neurodevelopmental disabilities and language and visual impairment. We also

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an update on the mental health needs of children and adolescents with learning disabilities, by examining salient studies published predominantly in the last 12-18 months.
RECENT FINDINGS: There have been further articles published supporting the findings of earlier landmark studies demonstrating an increased prevalence of mental health disorders in young people with learning disabilities. These articles suggest higher rates of comorbidity than were previously recognized. There are few published studies pertaining to the effectiveness of psychological and pharmac

Mathematical learning disabilities (MLD) occur frequently in children with specific genetic disorders, like Turner syndrome, fragile X syndrome and neurofibromatosis. This review focuses on MLD in children with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). This syndrome is the most common known microdeletion syndrome with a prevalence of at least 1:4000 to 1:6000 live births. Although the clinical presentation of 22q11DS is quite variable, its major characteristics include velopharyngeal abnormalities, congenital cardiac anomalies, mild facial dysmorphism and learning difficulties. Children

Expressed emotion (EE) is a measure of the affective relationship between two people characterized by criticism, hostility, and emotionally over-involved attitudes. Outside of the field of intellectual disabilities, there has been considerable interest in EE as an environmental marker that explains variance in the severity and/or course of a number of psychiatric disorders. Researchers have also studied EE in parents and found strong associations with children's behavior problems. In this review, we focus on the data from 11 published studies of EE in families of children and adults with intel

The purpose of this study was to investigate cognitive and other disabilities in children and adolescents with 22q11 deletion syndrome. Thirty-three children (15 females, 18 males; age range 3 to 19y, median 7y 6mo) with 22q11 deletion were investigated for growth, development, neurology, cognition, motor function, and participation (measured as handicap**). Half of the children had never crawled, although they had shuffled, and commencement of walking was delayed (mean 18mo, SD 6mo). Hypotonia was found in 25 and poor balance in 24 of the 33 children; 17 out of 27 had definite motor problems,
