A retrospective study (2006-2020) of biopsy cases in pet guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), degus (Octodon degus) and chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera) at an exotic animal clinic in Tokyo, Japan.

Hystricomorphs, such as guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), degus (Octodon degus) and chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), have become increasingly popular pet animals in Japan. However, comprehensive data on diseases in these animals remain limited, primarily restricted to single case reports, except for guinea pigs. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases in pet guinea pigs, degus and chinchillas in Japan and to describe their epidemiological characteristics. We reviewed biopsy samples from guinea pigs (n = 134), degus (n = 57) and chinchillas

Optical coherence tomographic measurements of the sound-induced motion of the ossicular chain in chinchillas: Additional modes of ossicular motion enhance the mechanical response of the chinchilla middle ear at higher frequencies.

Wavelength-swept optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to scan the structure of cadaveric chinchilla ears in three dimensions with high spatial resolution and measure the sound-induced displacements of the entire OCT-visible lateral surfaces of the ossicles in the lateral-to-medial direction. The simultaneous measurement of structure and displacement allowed a precise match between the observed motion and its structural origin. The structure and measured displacements are consistent with previously published data. The coincident detailed structural and motion measurements demonstrate the

Repair of Tympanic Membrane Perforations with Customized Bioprinted Ear Grafts Using Chinchilla Models.

The goal of this work is to develop an innovative method that combines bioprinting and endoscopic imaging to repair tympanic membrane perforations (TMPs). TMPs are a serious health issue because they can lead to both conductive hearing loss and repeated otitis media. TMPs occur in 3-5% of cases after ear tube placement, as well as in cases of acute otitis media (the second most common infection in pediatrics), chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma, or as a result of barotrauma to the ear. About 55,000 tympanoplasties, the surgery performed to reconstruct TMPs, are performed every

3D finite element model of the chinchilla ear for characterizing middle ear functions.

Chinchilla is a commonly used animal model for research of sound transmission through the ear. Experimental measurements of the middle ear transfer function in chinchillas have shown that the middle ear cavity greatly affects the tympanic membrane (TM) and stapes footplate (FP) displacements. However, there is no finite element (FE) model of the chinchilla ear available in the literature to characterize the middle ear functions with the anatomical features of the chinchilla ear. This paper reports a recently completed 3D FE model of the chinchilla ear based on X-ray micro-computed tomography i

Detection of otoacoustic emissions in chinchilla when the middle ear contains amniotic fluid.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Otoacoustic emissions have frequently been used for newborn hearing screening. However, they have low specificities and high referral rates. The presence of amniotic fluid in the middle ear is one reason for these problems. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of human amniotic fluid on otoacoustic emissions and on middle-ear function. METHODS: Forty-six chinchillas were randomly divided into eight groups based on the type (amniotic fluid or normal saline) and volume (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 ml) of liquid introduced into the middle ear. Distortion product otoacoust

Functional reorganization in chinchilla inferior colliculus associated with chronic and acute cochlear damage.

This paper describes some of the unexpected functional changes that occur in the inferior colliculus (IC) following noise- and drug-induced cochlear pathology. A striking example of this is the compensation that is seen in IC responsiveness after drug-induced selective inner hair cell (IHC) loss. Despite a massive reduction in the compound action potential (CAP) caused by partial IHC loss, the evoked potential amplitude from the IC shows little or no reduction. Acoustic trauma, which impairs cochlear sensitivity and tuning, also reduces the CAP amplitude. Despite this reduced neural input, IC

Mitigation of Hearing Damage After Repeated Blast Exposures in Animal Model of Chinchilla.

High-intensity sound or blast-induced hearing impairment is a common injury for Service members. Epidemiology studies revealed that the blast-induced hearing loss is associated with the traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the mechanisms of the formation and prevention of auditory injuries require further investigation. Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist, has been reported as a potential treatment strategy for TBI-caused memory deficits; however, there is no study on therapeutics of GLP-1R for blast-induced hearing damage. This paper reports our current study on prog

Progression of Peripheral Vestibular System Degeneration Secondary to Otitis Media in the Chinchilla Model.

HYPOTHESIS: Untreated otitis media (OM) may associate with progressive histopathological changes in the peripheral vestibular system structures in the chinchilla model. BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested a link between OM and vestibular pathology. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not well understood. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the progression of peripheral vestibular pathology in chinchilla temporal bones with OM. METHODS: Chinchilla temporal bones, both control and Streptococcus pneumoniae -inoculated, were obtained from the Paparella Otopathology & Ear Pathog

Comparison of the structure of chinchilla sperm isolated from semen and from the tail of the epididymis.

Sperm cells isolated from the tail of the epididymis and from the semen of the same individuals were analysed. The use of silver nitrate to stain sperm cells isolated from the tail of the epididymis made it possible to identify structures that were not visible in the sperm from semen. Silver nitrate very clearly distinguished the acrosomal and distal parts of the sperm head. Following silver nitrate staining, the sperm isolated from the tail of the epididymis were characterized by dark 'collars' in the distal part of the head. These 'collars' are not visible in the sperm cells isolated from se

Progressive hearing damage after exposure to repeated low-intensity blasts in chinchillas.

Hearing damage caused by blast waves is a frequent and common injury for Service members. However, most studies have focused on high-intensity blast exposures that are known to cause moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), and fewer studies have investigated the progressive hearing damage caused by low-intensity blast exposures (below mild TBI). In this paper, we report our recent study in chinchillas to investigate the auditory function changes over the time course after repetitive exposures to low-intensity blast. Two groups of chinchillas (N = 7 each) were used in this study. Group

Middle-ear function in the chinchilla: Circuit models and comparison with other mammalian species.

The middle ear efficiently transmits sound from the ear canal into the inner ear through a broad range of frequencies. Thus, understanding middle-ear transmission characteristics is essential in the study of hearing mechanics. Two models of the chinchilla middle ear are presented. In the first model, the middle ear is modeled as a lumped parameter system with elements that represent the ossicular chain and the middle-ear cavity. Parameters of this model are fit using available experimental data of two-port transmission matrix parameters. In an effort to improve agreement between model simulati

Sensitivity of unanesthetized chinchilla auditory system to noise burst onset, and the effects of carboplatin.

The gross near-field responses of the auditory nerve and inferior colliculus to noise burst stimuli were recorded through intracranially implanted electrodes in six unanesthetized chinchillas. Responses were studied as a function of stimulus plateau amplitude and rise time, both before and after a systemic dose of 75 mg/kg of carboplatin. Both recording sites showed sensitivity to stimulus level and rise time. Increases in stimulus level and decreases in stimulus rise time each produced increases in the response magnitude, and decreases in response latency. When the stimuli were re-specified a

Middle ear instillation of gentamicin and streptomycin in chinchillas: morphologic appraisal of selective ototoxicity.

OBJECTIVE: To determine selective cochlear and vestibular ototoxicity of two aminoglycoside antibiotics (gentamicin and streptomycin) in the chinchilla model. Middle ear application of these agents mirrors the clinical practice of chemical vestibular ablation used in Meniere's disease. BACKGROUND: Middle ear instillation of gentamicin or streptomycin has become a popular form of vestibular ablative treatment for disabling Meniere's disease. The vestibular selectivity of these two drugs applied in this fashion has clinical support but is not fully established in humans. Our understanding in th

The determination of phospholipids in middle ear effusion from experimental otitis media in the chinchilla.

Phospholipid types were clarified both in eustachian tube secretion (ETS) and middle ear effusions (MEEs) from chinchilla middle ear. ETS was obtained from normal healthy animals and from animals with experimentally induced purulent otitis media (POM). MEE was obtained from experimentally induced serous and purulent otitis media (SOM and POM). In normal ETS, phosphatidylcholine (36.4%) was predominant followed by phosphatidylethanolamine (30.6%), sphingomyelin (18.0%), phosphatidylinositol (7.2%), phosphatidylglycerol (8.8%) and phosphatidylserine (2.5%). A significant loss of phosphatidylchol

Prevention of pneumococcal otitis media in chinchillas with human bacterial polysaccharide immune globulin.

Clinical and experimental observations suggest that immune globulin may prevent otitis media (OM) in children. We performed experiments in chinchillas to test the hypothesis that human bacterial polysaccharide immune globulin (BPIG) might prevent OM caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Animals were given BPIG or saline intraperitoneally on day 0. On day 3 the epitympanic bulla was inoculated with S. pneumoniae type 7F. All 12 saline-treated and none of 12 BPIG-treated animals developed pneumococcal OM by day 7 (P less than 0.0001). Bacteremia developed in 6 of 12 saline- and 0 of 12 BPIG-treate

The effect of high level sound on hearing sensitivity, cochlear sensorineuroepithelium and vasculature of the chinchilla.

Ten young chinchilla were tested for hearing and then exposed for 8 hours to a 110 dB (SPL) broad-band noise. Post-stimulation recovery was assessed daily until permanent threshold shifts were obtained. Cochlear tissues were prepared in order to allow viewing of sensory cells as well as the vascular supply of the cochlea. Findings included inconsistent displacement of the vestibular membrane, poor injection of a contrast medium into vessels, moderate outer hair cell loss and displaced inner hair cell nuclei. Small basal turn cell damage was accompanied by greater than expected losses for high
