Impact of aluminium, fluoride and fluoroaluminate complex on ATPase activity of Nostoc linckia and Chlorella vulgaris.

This study demonstrates a pH-dependent inhibition of Mg(2+)- and Ca(2+)-ATPase activities of Nostoc linckia and Chlorella vulgaris exposed to AlCl3, AlF3, NaF and AlCl3+NaF together. AlF3 and the combination of AlCl3+NaF were more inhibitory to both the enzymes as compared with AlCl3 and NaF. Toxicity of the test compounds increased with increasing acidity. Interaction of AlCl3+NaF was additive on N. linckia and C. vulgaris, respectively, at pH 7.5 and 6.8, and synergistic at pH 6.0 and 4.5. In the presence of 60 and 100 microM PO4(3-) an increased NaF concentration (in the AlCl3+NaF combinati

Investigations of Diclofenac Sorption on Intact and Modified Chlorella vulgaris Biomass with pH-Switchable Desorption.

The growing interest in sustainable and structurally diverse sorbent materials has intensified the search for effective biosorbents that can complement or replace conventional adsorbents. This work presents the potential use of Chlorella vulgaris dried biomass and its modifications (ultrasound-treated, lipid-extracted, and combined forms) for diclofenac (DCF) sorption from aqueous solutions. It was demonstrated that sorption efficiency significantly depends on the solution's pH. Lowering the pH from 6 to 2 increases the sorption from 5% to 68%, while 99% desorption occurred at pH 9. The adsorp

The key molecular mechanisms of antagonism induced by combined exposure to erythromycin and roxithromycin in Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

Emerging pollutants such as antibiotics have raised great concern in recent years, but the complex coexistence of multiple antibiotics in the environment poses a new challenge in the accurate assessment of the toxicity of antibiotics to aquatic organisms such as microalgae. In this study, the mechanism of action of a combination of erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX) on Chlorella pyrenoidosa was illustrated based on the physiological-biochemical response and transcriptomic analysis. The results revealed an inhibitory effect on the biomass of C. pyrenoidosa at 14 d in all treatment group

Direct toxicity of the herbicide florasulam against Chlorella vulgaris: An integrated physiological and metabolomic analysis.

Herbicides are the agents of choice for use in weed control; however, they can enter the aquatic environment, with potentially serious consequences for non-target organisms. Despite the possible deleterious effects, little information is available regarding the ecotoxicity of the herbicide florasulam toward aquatic organisms. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated the toxic effect of florasulam on the freshwater microalga Chlorella vulgaris and sought to identify the underlying mechanisms. For this, we employed a growth inhibition toxicity test, and then assessed the changes in physiologi

Effects of oral supplementation with Spirulina and Chlorella on growth and digestive health in piglets around weaning.

Weaning of piglets is associated with important changes in gut structure and function resulting from stressful events such as separation from the sow, moving to a new facility and dietary transition from a liquid to a solid feed. This may result in post-weaning diarrhoea and a decrease in feed intake and growth. In humans, the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis (SP) and the freshwater microalga Chlorella vulgaris (CV) are known for their beneficial health effects. This study aimed to determine the effects of early oral administration of Spirulina and Chlorella in piglets on mucosal architectur

Combined effect of copper and cadmium on Chlorella vulgaris growth and photosynthesis-related gene transcription.

Chlorella vulgaris was tested to assess their toxicities in freshwater contaminated by the metal compounds of copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd), both singly and combined. Exposure to 0.5 and 1.5 microM Cu or 1.0 and 2.0 microM Cd alone significantly decreased algal growth and chlorophyll content and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) content. Two-way ANOVA analysis shows that the combination of these two metal compounds decreased cell growth, chlorophyll content and increased ROS content synergistically. The highest algal cell inhibition was 78.55%, the lowest levels of chl a, chl b and total-

Mitochondrial electron transport as a source for nitric oxide in the unicellular green alga Chlorella sorokiniana.

Wild type (WT), and nitrate reductase (NR)- and nitrite-reductase (NiR)-deficient cells of Chlorella sorokiniana were used to characterize nitric oxide (NO) emission. The NO emission from nitrate-grown WT cells was very low in air, increased slightly after addition of nitrite (200 microM), but strongly under anoxia. Importantly, even completely NR-free mutants, as well as cells grown on tungstate, emitted NO when fed with nitrite under anoxia. Therefore, this NO production from nitrite was independent of NR and other molybdenum cofactor enzymes. Cyanide and inhibitors of mitochondrial complex

Multiple environmental factors mediated-toxicity and mechanisms of environmentally relevant silver nanoparticles in Chlorella vulgaris.

The extensive application of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) has raised growing concerns regarding their potential ecological risks in aquatic environments. However, current studies remain largely on high dose exposure upon single factor, overlooking the complexity and heterogeneity of natural aquatic systems. This study investigated seven environmental factors on the response of Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) upon exposure of Ag NPs at environmentally relevant concentrations. The results showed that chloride ions (Cl-), nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, and light intensity are the dominant r

Excess manganese increases photosynthetic activity via enhanced reducing center and antenna plasticity in Chlorella vulgaris.

Photosynthesis relies on many easily oxidizable/reducible transition metals found in the metalloenzymes that make up much of the photosynthetic electron transport chain (ETC). One of these is manganese, an essential cofactor of photosystem II (PSII) and a component of the oxygen-evolving complex, the only biological entity capable of oxidizing water. Additionally, manganese is a cofactor in enzymatic antioxidants, notably the superoxide dismutases-which are localized to the chloroplastic membrane. However, unlike other metals found in the photosynthetic ETC, previous research has shown exposur

Chlorella vulgaris ameliorates testicular toxicity induced by deltamethrin in male rats via modulating oxidative stress.

This study was carried out to investigate the potential effects of Chlorella vulgaris (CV) on testicular function and oxidant/antioxidant status in normal and deltamethrin-intoxicated rats. Forty adult male rats were drenched either with normal saline, CV (50 mg/kg), deltamethrin (DM) (3 mg/kg), or CV combined with DM, daily for 8 weeks. At the end of the protocol, the epididymal sperm quality was evaluated and the testicular superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase enzyme (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the serum testosterone levels were estimated. Normal rats treated with CV showed a signif

Preparative separation of phytosterol analogues from green alga Chlorella vulgaris using recycling counter-current chromatography.

The unicellular alga Chlorella vulgaris is a well-known health food. It has been proven that the minor phytosterols, ergosterol and its analogue, are an important class of bioactive substances in C. vulgaris. In this work, a recycling counter-current chromatographic approach was proposed for preparative separation of two analogue sterols from crude extract of C. vulgaris. The separation unit was set up with a type-J instrument coupled with a column switching valve. A two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane/dichloromethane/acetonitrile (10:3:7, v/v/v) was selected and optimized. After fiv

The structurally unique photosynthetic Chlorella variabilis NC64A hydrogenase does not interact with plant-type ferredoxins.

Hydrogenases from green algae are linked to the photosynthetic electron transfer chain via the plant-type ferredoxin PetF. In this work the [FeFe]-hydrogenase from the Trebouxiophycean alga Chlorella variabilis NC64A (CvHydA1), which in contrast to other green algal hydrogenases contains additional FeS-cluster binding domains, was purified and specific enzyme activities for both hydrogen (H2) production and H2 oxidation were determined. Interestingly, although C. variabilis NC64A, like many Chlorophycean algal strains, exhibited light-dependent H2 production activity upon sulfur deprivation, C

Nitrate reductase from Chlorella vulgaris. Reaction with manganese (III) pyrophosphate and with ferric o-phenanthroline.

Millimolar concentrations of tervalent manganese pyrophosphate can partially activate nitrate reductase which has been inactivated with NADH and HCN. The tervalent manganese complex is nevertheless not reduced by NADH in the presence of the enzyme, that is, it is not a substrate for the diaphorase moiety of the nitrate reductase. Ferric o-phenanthroline, on the other hand, is a good diaphorase substrate, but fails to activate the inactive enzyme.
