Gut microbiota disorders aggravate terbuthylazine-induced mitochondrial quality control disturbance and PANoptosis in chicken hepatocyte through gut-liver axis.

Terbuthylazine (TBA) is a widely prevalent pesticide pollutant, which is a global concern due to its environmental residual. However, the toxic mechanism of TBA have not been fully solved. Here, we explored that TBA exposure disrupts the intestinal flora and aggravated disturbance of mitochondrial quality control and PANapoptosis in hepatocytes via gut-liver axis. Our findings demonstrated that TBA exposure induced significant damage to the jejunum barrier, evidenced by a marked decrease in the expression of Occludin and ZO-1. Moreover. TBA led to intestinal microflora disorder, manifested as

Effects of different wastewater characteristics and treatment techniques on the bacterial community structure in three pharmaceutical wastewater treatment systems.

Pharmaceutical wastewater is a typical type of wastewater with high concentrations of organic pollutants, but research on this subject is limited. The aeration tanks of three different pharmaceutical wastewater treatment systems were seeded with the same inocula and stably operated for 40 days. Then, aerobic sludge samples from the three aeration tanks were collected to provide insight into the bacterial community composition of the activated sludges. Additionally, we investigated the effects of wastewater characteristics and the type and operation of the technological system on the microbial

Niche differentiation of bacterial communities at a millimeter scale in Shark Bay microbial mats.

Modern microbial mats can provide key insights into early Earth ecosystems, and Shark Bay, Australia, holds one of the best examples of these systems. Identifying the spatial distribution of microorganisms with mat depth facilitates a greater understanding of specific niches and potentially novel microbial interactions. High throughput sequencing coupled with elemental analyses and biogeochemical measurements of two distinct mat types (smooth and pustular) at a millimeter scale were undertaken in the present study. A total of 8,263,982 16S rRNA gene sequences were obtained, which were affiliat

Development and characterization of DehaloR^2, a novel anaerobic microbial consortium performing rapid dechlorination of TCE to ethene.

A novel anaerobic consortium, named DehaloR^2, that performs rapid and complete reductive dechlorination of trichloroethene (TCE) to ethene is described. DehaloR^2 was developed from estuarine sediment from the Back River of the Chesapeake Bay and has been stably maintained in the laboratory for over 2 years. Initial sediment microcosms showed incomplete reduction of TCE to DCE with a ratio of trans- to cis- isomers of 1.67. However, complete reduction to ethene was achieved within 10 days after transfer of the consortium to sediment-free media and was accompanied by a shift to cis-DCE as the

Dehalococcoides abundance and alternate electron acceptor effects on large, flow-through trichloroethene dechlorinating columns.

Trichloroethene (TCE) in groundwater is a major health concern and biostimulation/bioaugmentation-based strategies have been evaluated to achieve complete reductive dechlorination with varying success. Different carbon sources were hypothesized to stimulate different extents of TCE reductive dechlorination. Ecological conditions that developed different dechlorination stages were investigated by quantitating Dehalococcoides 16S rRNA (Dhc) and reductive dehalogenase gene abundance, and by describing biogeochemical properties of laboratory columns in response to this biostimulation. Eight large

Global gene expression of Dehalococcoides within a robust dynamic TCE-dechlorinating community under conditions of periodic substrate supply.

A microarray targeting four sequenced strains in the Dehalococcoides (Dhc) genus was used to analyze gene expression in a robust long-term trichloroethene (TCE)-degrading microbial community (designated ANAS) during feeding cycles that involve conditions of periodic substrate supply. The Dhc transcriptome was examined at three time-points throughout a batch feeding cycle: T1 (27 h) when TCE, dichloroethene (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) were present; T2 (54 h) when only VC remained; and T3 (13 days) when Dhc had been starved of substrate for 9 days. Ninety percent of the Dhc open reading frame

Effects of K+ salinity on the sludge activity and the microbial community structure of an A2O process.

Salt ions are ubiquitous in wastewater and have significant impacts on the microbial activity and nitrogen and phosphorus removal in biological wastewater treatment processes. The effects of KCl salinity on the removal of COD, TN and PO43--P were investigated in a lab-scale A2O process. Meanwhile, the effects of K+ concentration on the composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the microbial community structure were demonstrated. The results showed that the pollutant removal efficiencies and the bioactivity of the activated sludge decreased and the EPS content enhanced under h

Revisiting the dihaloelimination potential of Dehalococcoides revealed by genomic and proteomic analyses.

UNLABELLED: Dehalococcoides (Dhc) has recently gained significant attention in microbial reductive dehalogenation due to its specialized ability to metabolize various halocarbons. While previous reports have documented Dhc-mediated dihaloelimination of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,2-dibromoethane, this study reveals an expansion of Dhc's dihaloelimination substrate range. We successfully established PJDCA and PJTCA enrichment cultures from petroleum-contaminated soil, exhibiting dihaloelimination activity toward 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA), 1,2,3-tri

Stratification of chlorinated ethenes natural attenuation in an alluvial aquifer assessed by hydrochemical and biomolecular tools.

Biomolecular and hydrochemical tools were used to evaluate natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes in a Quaternary alluvial aquifer located close to a historical source of large-scale tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination. Distinct stratification of redox zones was observed, despite the aquifer's small thickness (2.8 m). The uppermost zone of the target aquifer was characterised by oxygen- and nitrate-reducing conditions, with mixed iron- to sulphate-reducing conditions dominant in the lower zone, along with indications of methanogenesis. Natural attenuation of PCE was strongly influenced

Coupling permanganate oxidation with microbial dechlorination of tetrachloroethene.

For sites contaminated with chloroethene non-aqueous-phase liquids, designing a remediation system that couples in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and microbial dechlorination may be complicated because of the potentially adverse effects of ISCO on anaerobic bioremediation processes. Therefore, one-dimensional column studies were conducted to understand the effect of permanganate oxidation on tetrachloroethene (PCE) dechlorination by the anaerobic mixed culture KB-1. Following the confirmation of PCE dechlorination, KMnO4 was applied to all columns at a range

Dechlorination of PCE in the presence of Fe0 enhanced by a mixed culture containing two Dehalococcoides strains.

A mixed culture capable of supplying its energy requirements by the oxidation of zero-valent iron (Fe0) and concomitant reduction of chlorinated ethenes was established. The culture contained Dehalococcoides species as determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with genus specific primers. The use of a newly designed ARDRA procedure and subsequent sequencing revealed the presence of two Dehalococcoides strains, one closely related to Dehalococcoides ethenogenes strain 195, a bacterium respiring with chlorinated ethenes, and one closely related to strain CBDB1 a chlorobenzene and dioxin deha

Metabolic reconstruction and microbial network assembly immobilised heavy metals during soil function recovery in coal gangue.

Coal gangue stockpiling leads to considerable soil heavy metal contamination and ecological degradation. Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) exhibits strong phytoremediation potential; however, the mechanisms underlying heavy metal immobilisation during soil function recovery remains unclear. In this study, a spatiotemporal substitution method was applied to investigate soil heavy metal distribution, microbial communities, and metabolite profiles during a nine-year cultivation period of V. zizanioides in coal gangue. Long-term cultivation effectively immobilised heavy metals (Cr, Cu, and Zn), reduced t

Identification of microbial groups and functional genes associated with greenhouse gas emissions in prawn farms.

Understanding microbial associations with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential for promoting climate-friendly prawn production, yet it remains largely unexplored. To examine microbial-GHG relationships, this study analysed CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, characterised microbial communities, and measured the abundances of key functional genes (mcrA, pmoA, amoA, and nosZ) in water and sediment from Bangladeshi prawn farms. Results showed that microbial richness was positively correlated with CO2 and N2O emissions but negatively with CH4 emissions. Methanogenic archaea, most abundant in high-

Enhanced tetracycline removal in sequencing batch reactors by bioaugmentation using tetX-carrying strains: Efficiency and mechanisms.

Tetracyclines antibiotics (TCs) pose notable environmental challenges due to their persistence in the effluent of wastewater treatment systems. Bioaugmentation offers a promising strategy for their removal, yet information is still very limited. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of bioaugmentation using wild-type (Sphingobacterium sp. WM1) and engineered tetX-carrying (PUC-tetX) strains for enhancing tetracycline (TC) removal in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Bioaugmentation mitigated TC's inhibitory effects on denitrification and phosphorus removal processes within SBR systems. Speci

Oyster Peptide-Zinc Complex Ameliorates Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate-Induced Testis Injury in Male Mice and Improving Gut Microbiota.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer, which can cause damage to male reproductive organs, especially the atrophy of the testis. Meanwhile, DEHP can also lead to a decrease in testicular zinc content, but the role of zinc remains unclear. This study aims to prepare oyster peptide-zinc complex (OPZC) to alleviate DEHP-induced reproductive damage in mice. OPZC was successfully obtained through electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, with stable structure and high water-solubility. Low dose oyster peptide-zinc complex (OPZCL) significantly

Halosulfuron methyl did not have a significant effect on diversity and community of sugarcane rhizosphere microflora.

Halosulfuron methyl (HM) is a new, highly active sulfonylurea herbicide that has been widely used for weed control in agricultural production. However, its potential ecological risks remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of different concentrations of HM on bacterial communities in sugarcane rhizospheric soil by using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. The half-life of HM for 130 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, and 1300 mg/kg spraying concentrations were 6.64, 9.19, and 9.87 d, respectively. HM application did not alter the alpha or beta diversity of the soil bacterial community,

Marine mercury-methylating microbial communities from coastal to Capbreton Canyon sediments (North Atlantic Ocean).

Microbial mercury (Hg) methylation transforms inorganic mercury to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) mainly in aquatic anoxic environments. Sampling challenges in marine ecosystems, particularly in submarine canyons, leads to a lack of knowledge about the Hg methylating microbia in marine sediments. A previous study showed an enrichment of mercury species in sediments from the Capbreton Canyon where both geochemical parameters and microbial activities constrained the net MeHg production. In order to characterize Hg-methylating microbial communities from coastal to deeper sediments, we analysed t

Pyrosequencing reveals microbial community dynamics in integrated simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification process at different influent nitrate concentrations.

Integrated simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification (ISDD) process has proven to be feasible for the coremoval of sulfate, nitrate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this study, we aimed to reveal the microbial community dynamics in the ISDD process with different influent nitrate (NO3-) concentrations. For all tested scenarios, full denitrification was accomplished while sulfate removal efficiency decreased along with increased influent NO3- concentrations. The proportion of S0 to influent SO42- maintained a low level (5.6-17.0%) regardless of the increased influent NO3- concentrat

Abundant iron and sulfur oxidizers in the stratified sediment of a eutrophic freshwater reservoir with annual cyanobacterial blooms.

The microbial community in eutrophic freshwater sediment was investigated from a 67-cm-deep sediment core collected from the Daechung Reservoir in South Korea, where cyanobacterial blooms have occurred annually for the past 30 years. The majority of core sediments were characterized by dark-grayish, fine-grained mud with abundant gas-escaped and thinly laminated layers. Intervals of summer and winter seasons were represented by periodic peaks of geochemical profiles of parameters such as grain size and relative carbon mass ratios to various nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Deciphering microbiomes in anaerobic reactors with superior trichloroethylene dechlorination performance at low pH conditions.

Different pH conditions have been demonstrated to affect the activities of dechlorinating populations participating in the successive dechlorination of trichloroethylene to ethylene. However, the mechanism of the effect of pH conditions on the assembly of dechlorinating populations and their relations to the structure, function, and dynamics of the microbiome are unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of pH on microbiomes assembled in anaerobic trichloroethylene-dechlorinating reactors under neutral (pH 7.2), acidic (pH 6.2), and alkaline (pH 8.2) conditions. The results revealed tha
