The prevalence of pathological calcifications in the menisci and articular cartilage of both knees was investigated macroscopically and radiologically in 130 consecutive autopsies. The mean age of the subjects was 72 +/- 13 years. Only 8 subjects were less than 50 years old. All had been admitted to hospital and no patient had a history of joint disorders. Half of the patients were male. Calcifications were found in 27 (20.7%) cases, all over 60 years of age. There were 15.4% males and 26.1% females affected. The incidence of intraarticular calcifications in females increased from 11.1-37.5% a

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease is categorized into radiographic chondrocalcinosis, acute calcium pyrophosphate arthritis, chronic calcium pyrophosphate arthritis, and osteoarthritis with calcium pyrophosphate deposition. These entities collectively are characterized by the deposition of calcium into joints, which then may cause localized and systemic inflammation, resulting in pain and swelling in the affected joints. Patients with the ANKH gene are more susceptible to the development of CPP arthritis as are those with primary hyperparathyroidism, hypomagnesemia, and hemochromatosis.

Gitelman syndrome is an inherited tubulopathy leading to a hypokalaemic metabolic alkalosis with hypomagnesaemia and hypocalciuria. Most cases are due to mutations in SLC12A3, encoding the apical thiazide sensitive co-transporter in the distal convoluted tubule. Musculoskeletal effects of Gitelman syndrome are common, including muscle weakness, tetany and cramps. Chronic hypomagnesaemia can lead to chondrocalcinosis, which often affects knees but can affect other joints. Here we present a case of Gitelman syndrome complicated by cervical chondrocalcinosis leading to neck pain and numbness of t

We report the imaging findings in extra-articular chondrocalcinosis in a 53-year-old man with swelling and pain in right scapular area for 1 year. Plain radiography showed a right scapular area calcific mass. The clinical suspicion was of a soft tissue sarcoma. As a part of diagnostic workup, a bone scan and a PET/CT scan were done. Bone scan revealed intense MDP uptake in the right scapular area. FDG PET/CT revealed intense FDG uptake in the mass. The biopsy revealed chondrocalcinosis. This is an addition to our long list of causes of extraosseous uptake of MDP.

Articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC) is a metabolic arthropathy caused by calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposits. It is frequent in the second half of the life (6% of the population aged between 60 and 70 years, 30% of the elderly after 80 years). Both males and females, are involved in the same proportion. Clinical manifestations include pseudogout attacks, mainly of the knee and wrist joints, secondary osteoarthritis and destructive arthropathy (mainly of the knee and hip joints). There is no basis therapy. The pyrophosphate calcium deposits do not disappear during the evolution of the disease.

A study of three femoral heads removed from patients suffering from articular chondrocalcinosis enabled the authors to identify the lesions of the cartilage in that disorder. They are mainly represented by crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. They appear within the cartilage which is macroscopically intact and histologically normal, but their location and the related tissue phenomena in their formation remain controversial and poorly understood. They accumulate in the various layers of the non-calcified cartilage within which they appear to hollow out genuine cavities by pushing back and then de

Referring to 17 personal observations, the authors endeavour to clarify the main clinical and radiological traits of the destructive arthropathies occuring in patients suffering from diffuse, articular chondrocalcinosis. These arthropathies appear to be relatively frequent and older, obese women suffering from demineralization are more readily affected. The knees, coxo-femoral joints and the shoulders are principally concerned, and to a lesser extent the wrists, the trapezo-metacarpal joints and even the spine. The lesions can be polyarticular and symmetrical, be grouped in more or less random

We describe a case with a very long history of recurrent episodes of arthritis without radiological articular damage. After 47 years of followup, he developed chondrocalcinosis located only in previously affected joints. Our patient illustrates the heterogeneity of palindromic rheumatism, which should more appropriately be considered as a clinical syndrome. Our case gives us the opportunity to discuss the nosologic situation of palindromic rheumatism and the role of primary joint damage in the articular deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate.

Chondrocalcinosis may be asymptomatic or take three classical forms (acute recurrent inflammatory, chronic inflammatory, with osteoarthritis). Apart form that, CPP crystal arthropathies can mimic several rheumatic diseases, including polymyalgia, septic arthritis and spondylodiscitis. Several conditions can predispose to chondrocalcinosis, including hemochromatosis, hyperparathyroidism, familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, hypomagnesemia and treatment with tacrolimus or diuretics. The diagnostic sensitivity of ultrasound seems better than radiography and CT is useful in spinal forms but whene

A 78 year old female patient with cervical myelopathy induced by a calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate tophus around the dens axis with clinical signs of a cervical tumor is presented. After operation of the tumor, the diagnosis of a generalized CPPD disease was established retrospectively, where by patient had complained of joint pain already for many years. This known complication of a primary chondrocalcinosis should be a reason for a careful investigation of the cervical spine in CPPD disease, because neurological disturbances might increase the joint destruction in the manner of "Charcot join

Articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC), which is due to the precipitation of calcium pyrophosphate microcrystals, is known to produce symptom of acute arthritis or chronic degenerative polyarticular lesions. It is more rarely responsible for rapidly destructive lesions of the joints suggesting a metabolic or neurological process. The case reported here of a 66 year old woman with major lesions of the L1-L2 intervertebral space, together with other cases already published, shows that the destructive spinal forms of ACC may also present as subacute spondylodiscitis. The latter, however, merely repres

Chondrocalcinosis is a common arthritic disorder among elderly patients. We present a case of a 71-year-old woman presenting with an acute episode of the left forearm with hand swelling. A provisional diagnosis of cellulitis was made and the patient was started on intravenous antibiotics. The patient's condition did not improve. Joint aspiration of the wrist joint was done and showed positive birefringent rhomboid-shaped crystals. A final diagnosis of acute chondrocalcinosis was made.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrocalcinosis is a microcrystalline arthropathy that principally affects the knee. It is a rare disorder, usually asymptomatic, that occurs mainly in the elderly people.
PURPOSE: To report a case of a temporomandibular joint chondrocalcinosis with ossicular contact revealed by a conductive hearing loss.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 57-year-old man with a right conductive sudden hearing loss of 15 dB. The CT scan revealed a lytic lesion in the right attic extended to the middle cerebral fossa in contact with the ossicles with a suspicion of lysis of the head of the

BACKGROUND: There are different diseases which are associated with articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC) although in some it is debated whether this is a real association or an accidental coexistence. The aim of the present study was to analyze the prevalence and type of associated diseases in a series of patients with ACC and to compare with other series in the literature, as well as determine the performance of a protocol directed to the search for such diseases in patients with ACC.
METHOD: A total of 95 patients diagnosed of ACC and attended in the out patients department of Rheumatology in a
