Nasosinusal chondrosarcoma with orbito-cerebral extension.

Chondrosarcoma is a highly aggressive malignant tumor originating from cartilaginous and mesenchymal tissues. The aim of this report is to describe a rare case of nasosinusal chondrosarcoma with orbito-cerebral extension. Our patient was a 55-year-old with a right cheek swelling evolving over a year, with unilateral right nasal obstruction gradually becoming bilateral associated with hyposmia, bilateral exophthalmos, reduced bilateral deep visual acuity and permanent headaches. The clinical examination found a tumor obstructing the two nasal cavities. Imaging showed a lobulated heterogeneous t

Huge sternal chondrosarcoma: a case report.

A 75-year-old man presented very late with a huge sternal mass that measured 91 × 84 mm on computed tomography. A core needle biopsy revealed atypical cartilage tissue, suggesting chondrosarcoma. The mass was resected and the defect was reconstructed with bone cement, Prolene mesh, and a muscle flap.

Presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma in cats.

Following unilateral enucleation, 4 Domestic Shorthair cats with an average age of 12.5 years (range: 9-16 years) were histologically diagnosed with a presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin). Medical records and follow-up were available for 3 of the 4 cats. Clinically, only 1 eye was affected in each cat; a mass lesion was noted in 2 cats, and a neoplasm was suspected in the other 2 cats. Grossly, 3 tumors presented as coalescing, poorly demarcated, white, friable masses filling the vitreous and intraocular ch

Clinical outcome of central conventional chondrosarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: Aim of this study was to analyze (1) survival, local recurrence (LR), and metastasis rates between the three histological tumor grades; (2) whether type of treatment and tumor site influenced prognosis for each histologic grade. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 296 patients with central conventional chondrosarcomas (CS) (87 grade 1, 162 grade 2, and 47 grade 3). The femur was the most common site (91 cases), followed by the pelvis (82) and other less frequent sites. Type of surgery was related with histologic grade. Margins were wide in 222 cases, marginal in 23, and intrales

Primary mediastinal chondrosarcoma with Horner's syndrome.

Chondrosarcomas are uncommon tumors of the mediastinum. Cases reported in the literature are chondrosarcomas originating from osteocartilaginous structures; primary chondrosarcomas that have no anatomical relation with cartilaginous structures are rare. They present with myriad symptoms depending on compression of the adjacent structures; but Horner's syndrome, as a symptom, has not been described before. We report a rare case of a large primary mediastinal chondrosarcoma that presented with Horner's syndrome.

Intracranial extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We present a patient with a dural-based intracranial extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, which was initially thought to be an atypical meningioma. This rare tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of young adults with an aggressive-appearing dural-based lesion. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman reported a 3-week history of severe headaches and intermittent nausea and vomiting. Neurological examination revealed right optic nerve swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large, intensely enhancing extra-axial mass, which appear

Maffucci's syndrome combined with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma.

We report a rare case of Maffucci's syndrome combined with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma in the right shoulder girdle developing from pre-existing enchondroma. In this case, magnetic resonance imaging was useful in diagnosing dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma before surgery. T2-weighted imaging was used to distinguish between the cartilaginous component and the dedifferentiated one. Histologically, there was enchondroma in the humerus and grade 2 chondrosarcoma in the scapula. Further, the dedifferentiated tumor had three mesenchymal elements: osteosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and

Chondrosarcoma Involving the Ciliary Body and Choroid.

A 56-year-old man with a history of hereditary multiple exostoses and secondary low-grade chondrosarcomas was diagnosed with a pigmented mass in his left eye involving the inferonasal ciliary body and peripheral choroid following a superotemporal visual field defect. The intraocular mass continued to grow following brachytherapy, prompting enucleation that revealed a low-grade chondrosarcoma (CHS), similar in appearance to his prior skeletal neoplasms. There are 3 reports of CHS metastatic to the eye, and all 3 individuals had metastases to the lungs and other body sites before or at the time

Tracheal Chondrosarcoma: A Case Report and Discussion.

INTRODUCTION: Tracheal chondrosarcoma is an exceedingly rare malignant tumor arising from the cartilage parts of the trachea, with less than 40 cases described in the English literature. We aim to explore the current literature on the topic and present 1 more case of tracheal chondrosarcoma in a 69-year-old male. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old male presented with upper airway obstruction and difficulty breathing. He also reported recent unintentional weight loss and night sweats. A computed tomography (CT) scan upon hospitalization revealed a large tumor formation that was obstructing the t

Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Mandible: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MCs) are rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms of the head and neck region. They originate either primarily from preexisting cartilage or secondarily from Paget's disease and fibrous dysplasia. In the head and neck region, the larynx, maxilla, and nasal cavity are the most common sites. Mandibular chondrosarcoma is quite rare. On CT scan, it appears as a lobulated mass containing a chondroid matrix. Adequate tissue sampling is essential for accurate histopathological and immunohistochemical diagnosis to avoid misdiagnosis with its mimickers. The prognosis of MC is c

Nasal clear cell chondrosarcoma in a dog.

An intranasal tumour was diagnosed in a 5-year-old male neutered crossbreed dog following a 6-8 week history of intermittent epistaxis and nasal discharge. Computed tomography identified a mass in the right nasal cavity. Histologically, the mass was composed of sheets and indistinct clusters of predominantly clear or vacuolated round to polygonal cells; periodic acid-Schiff staining revealed glycogen granules within some tumour cells. Immunohistochemical labelling revealed that the tumour cells were immunopositive for vimentin and S100 and negative for pancytokeratin, Melan-A and PNL2, support

Chondrosarcoma in Metachondromatosis: A Rare Case Report.

Metachondromatosis which was first described in 1971 by Maroteaux is a rare genetic disease consisting of osteochondromas and enchondromas, caused by loss of function of the PTPN11 gene. It is distinct from other cartilaginous tumors such as multiple osteochondromas and hereditary multiple exostosis by the distribution and orientation of lesions, and pattern of inheritance. In Metachondromatosis osteochondromas typically occur in hands, feet, femur, and tibia while enchondromas commonly affect the pelvic bones and femurs. Both tumors are generally reported to regress in adulthood. To the best

Severe Hypocalcemia in a Patient with Recurrent Chondrosarcoma.

Hypocalcemia is relatively uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome. Only one case of hypocalcemia has been reported in a patient with chondrosarcoma. We herein report a case of a 32-year-old woman with metastatic chondrosarcoma with tetany. Her imaging findings revealed multiple calcific metastatic lesions in the lungs, pancreas, left atrium, and pulmonary vein. A laboratory examination showed hypocalcemia with no evidence of any other disease that could induce hypocalcemia. On the basis of the laboratory and clinical findings, we concluded the etiology of her severe hypocalcemia to be excessive calc

[Osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma of the pelvis and lower extremities].

A wide tumor resection is essential in the therapy of primary malignant bone tumors to minimize the risk of local recurrence and ensure long-term survival. While chondrosarcoma is mainly treated surgically, osteosarcoma therapy consists of both chemotherapy and surgical resection of the tumor. While endoprosthetic replacement after hemipelvectomy tends to be associated with high infection rates and has been superseded by hip transposition and composite osteosynthetic replacements, the use of megaendoprosthetic tumor prostheses is the most common reconstruction technique when the extremities ar

Rare case of a primary intracranial chondrosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial chondrosarcomas comprise 6% of all skull base neoplasms and account for 0.15% of all intracranial tumors. They are potentially fatal, invading the brain and elevating intracranial pressure by progressive enlargement. Diplopia and headache are the most common clinical symptoms. Previous data indicate a particularly aggressive behavior of intracranial chondrosarcomas. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female patient presented to the hospital with focal seizures. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a brain tumor located in the right meso-temporal region. Total tumo

A chondrosarcoma in the anterior mediastinum mimicking a thymoma.

A chondrosarcoma in the anterior mediastinum is a rare finding with a relatively good prognosis. We describe a case of a 75-year-old man with a 2-year history of neck discomfort and weight loss. Imaging showed a homogenous tumor with a minor compression on the anterior part of the heart. It had close relation to the ribs, no surrounding fat, and a thymoma was suspected. Biopsy prior to surgery was impossible due to the location of the tumor. Unfortunately, final pathology from the surgical specimen revealed a chondrosarcoma.
