Dehydrated Human Amnion-Chorion Membrane as a Bioactive Scaffold for Dental Pulp Tissue Regeneration.

The dehydrated human amnion-chorion membranes (dHACMs) derived from the human placenta have emerged as a promising biomaterial for dental pulp regeneration owing to their unique biological and structural properties. The purpose of this review is to explore the potentials of dHACMs in dental pulp tissue engineering, focusing on their ability to promote cellular proliferation, differentiation, angiogenesis, and neurogenesis. dHACMs are rich in extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors such as TGF-β1, FGF2, and VEGF. They also exhibit significant anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial propert

Micronized Dehydrated Human Amnion/Chorion Membrane Injection in the Treatment of Chronic Achilles Tendinitis.

BACKGROUND: Human amniotic membrane contains growth factors and cytokines that promote epithelial cell migration and proliferation, stimulate metabolic processes that lead to collagen synthesis, and attract fibroblasts, while also reducing pain and inflammation. Randomized studies have shown effectiveness of micronized dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (mdHACM) allograft injection in treatment of plantar fasciitis. We present our experience and short-term outcomes with using mdHACM injection as a treatment for Achilles tendinopathy. METHODS: Retrospective case series of patients with A

Clinical experience using a dehydrated amnion/chorion membrane construct for the management of wounds.

INTRODUCTION: Over time, acute and chronic, nonhealing wounds impose heavy financial and quality-of-life burdens on patients. The introduction of new therapies for wounds is essential in benefiting the patient, and in this report, the clinical experience of various wound care providers treating wounds with dehydrated amnion/chorion membrane (dACM) is presented. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective clinical experience evaluated the effects of dACM in the treatment of 50 acute and chronic wounds of various etiologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective case data of patients who received dACM as par

Decellularized human placenta chorion matrix as a favorable source of small-diameter vascular grafts.

UNLABELLED: Biomaterials based on decellularized tissues are increasingly attracting attention as functional alternatives to other natural or synthetic materials. However, a source of non-cadaver human allograft material would be favorable. Here we establish a decellularization method of vascular tissue from cryopreserved human placenta chorionic plate starting with an initial freeze-thaw step followed by a series of chemical treatments applied with a custom-made perfusion system. This novel pulsatile perfusion set-up enabled us to successfully decellularize the vascular tissue with lower conc

Silk moth chorion pseudogenes: hallmarks of genomic evolution by sequence duplication and gene conversion.

The part of the genetic locus of the domesticated silk moth, Bombyx mori, in which high cysteine (Hc) chorion genes of late developmental specificity reside contains regions encompassing gene-like sequences which exhibit properties distinct from those of functional Hc genes. One of these regions has been characterized and shown to contain a chorion pseudogene, psi HcB.15, which shares pronounced similarities with a transcribed chorion pseudogene, psi HcB.12/13, which was characterized previously. Both pseudogenes are homologous to HcB chorion genes but bear multiple single nucleotide substitut

The effects of chorion type on normal and abnormal developmental variation in monozygous twins.

To determine the effects, if any, of chorion type on normal and abnormal developmental variation in monozygous (MZ) twins, we tested the hypothesis that disparate environments that are related to chorion type have no effect on this variation. The parameters studied included congenital anomalies and dermatoglyphics (total ridge count and right-left asymmetry). With the exception of total ridge count, analyses of these data failed to reject the null hypothesis. Dichorionic MZ twins had a significantly greater within-pair variation than monochorionic MZ twins for total ridge count. In summary, th

Chorion tissue- and plasma-derived extracellular vesicles exhibit superior anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are the foundation of modern regenerative medicine using a cell-free approach. While current research mainly explores EVs from biological fluids and cell culture supernatants, tissue-derived EVs hold great promise, but remain largely underexplored. Since healthy placental tissues such as the chorion are widely available after full-term delivery, ethically unobjectionable, and possess exceptional regenerative potential, we sought to compare the biological effects of EVs derived directly from chorion tissue with those from chorion-derived mesenchymal stro

Clinical and histological outcomes of allogenic amnion-chorion membrane for palatal donor site healing.

BACKGROUND: This pilot split-mouth randomized controlled trial aimed to compare the effectiveness of an allogenic amnion-chorion membrane (ACM) in promoting clinical and histological palatal donor site wound healing to a collagen dressing (CLD). METHODS: Two palatal donor sites (right and left) of 19 participants requiring free gingival graft (FGG) procedures were randomly assigned to receive either ACM (test group) or CLD (control group). Clinical outcomes, including the size of the wound area, the degree of epithelialization, color match, bleeding condition, pain, and sensibility, were meas

Dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane to treat venous leg ulcers: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (DHACM) in Medicare enrolees who developed a venous leg ulcer (VLU). METHOD: This economic evaluation used a four-state Markov model to simulate the disease progression of VLUs for patients receiving advanced treatment (AT) with DHACM or no advanced treatment (NAT) over a three-year time horizon from a US Medicare perspective. DHACM treatments were assessed when following parameters for use (FPFU), whereby applications were initiated 30-45 days after the initial VLU diagnosis claim, and reapplications oc

Human Amnion/Chorion Membrane May Reduce Transient Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury During Thyroid Surgery.

Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) damage is a significant and prevalent complication of thyroid surgery. Based on the beneficial role of a human amnion/chorion membrane (HACM) allograft in wound management and nerve regeneration, we investigated whether placement of a commercially available HACM allograft on dissected RLN could reduce the occurrence and/or duration of RLN injury during thyroidectomy. Among 67 patients undergoing thyroidectomy, 100 at-risk nerves (exposure of at least 3 cm of RLN) received intraoperative placement of HACM; 205 at-risk RLNs without HACM in 134 matched patients ser

Biological properties of dehydrated human amnion/chorion composite graft: implications for chronic wound healing.

Human amnion/chorion tissue derived from the placenta is rich in cytokines and growth factors known to promote wound healing; however, preservation of the biological activities of therapeutic allografts during processing remains a challenge. In this study, PURION® (MiMedx, Marietta, GA) processed dehydrated human amnion/chorion tissue allografts (dHACM, EpiFix®, MiMedx) were evaluated for the presence of growth factors, interleukins (ILs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were performed on samples of dHACM and showed quantifiable le

[Effect of noninvasive first trimester diagnosis on indications and results of chorion villi sampling].

AIM: In this explorative study it should be evaluated how the introduction of non invasive first trimester diagnosis (nuchal translucency measurement, Combined Test, first trimester ultrasound screening) has influenced the indications and cytogenetic results of chorion villi samplings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1989 and 2008 3337 pregnancies with CVS between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation were examined retrospectively. They were divided in two groups: CVS 1989 - 2001 before introduction of non invasive first trimester diagnosis (n = 1698) and CVS 2002 - 2008 after introducing non invasive

Effects of elm bark extracts from Ulmus laevis on human chorion carcinoma cell lines.

PURPOSE: The potential of substances from elm bark extracts to affect cancer has been described in several studies. In this study, the anticancer effects of extracts from Ulmus laevis bark were tested in hormone-dependent gynecological tumours using human chorion carcinoma cell lines. METHODS: The molecular-chemical composition of the bark extract was analysed by pyrolysis-field ionisation mass spectrometry. The influence of the extracts was determined on cell vitality and cytotoxicity in the human chorion carcinoma cell lines Jeg3 and BeWo in comparison with primary trophoblast cells. RESUL

Comparison of chorion villus sampling and early amniocentesis for karyotyping in 1,492 singleton pregnancies.

This was a prospective study in 1,492 women with singleton viable pregnancies undergoing chorion villus sampling (CVS) or early amniocentesis (EA) at 10-13 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age, parental anxiety or family history of chromosomal abnormality in the absence of parental chromosomal rearrangement. They were offered the option of having CVS or EA, or to be randomised into one of the two tests. CVS was performed in 652 cases (375 by choice and 277 by randomisation) and EA was performed in 840 cases (562 by choice and 278 by randomisation). Both procedures were carried o

Chronic polyhydramnios is a syndrome with a lactogen receptor defect in the chorion laeve.

Human chorion laeve contains a lactogenic hormone [prolactin (PRL), growth hormone (GH) and placental lactogen (hPL)] receptor. Here, we studied binding of the potent lactogen, human GH, to this receptor in 18 normal pregnant women, in 12 patients whose pregnancies were complicated by chronic polyhydramnios and in 13 with chronic oligohydramnios. Polyhydramnios was classified clinically as idiopathic in seven patients, and secondary and associated with various disorders in the remaining five patients. Lactogenic hormone binding was lower in association with polyhydramnios (mean 1.60, SEM 0.15%
