A 32-year-old woman presented with amenorrhea after a normal childbirth and subsequently developed nephrotic syndrome. Renal biopsy showed a thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA)-like glomerular lesion with deposits of immunoglobulins, complements, and fibrinogen. Discordance has been reported in human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) concentrations measured by different immunoassay kits. We examined the results for 40 serum samples assayed with 10 different hCG immunoassay kits. Results varied considerably. Individual sample results varied by as much as 58-fold. Average results for different kits varied by as much as 1.4-fold for pregnancy (20 samples) and 2.2-fold for trophoblast disease (20 samples) serum. To identify possible clinically valuable markers of metastatic renal cell carcinoma, we measured the serum concentrations of several commercially available biomarkers in 117 patients with this disease. The alpha-fetoprotein level was measured in 75 patients and was elevated in 8 (11%); elevation did not correlate with the presence of liver metastasis. BACKGROUND: The use of methotrexate (MTX) by systemic administration in the treatment of unruptured ectopic pregnancy has been reported as a safe and effective method.
CASES: We report three cases (one hematosalpinx and two pelvic hematocoeles) of complications after the use of MTX in the treatment of unruptured ectopic pregnancies. All three cases came to our observation for pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding and a pelvic mass after an interval of 3-5 months, subsequent to the disappearance of symptoms and normalization of serum human chorionic gonadotropin beta-subunit (beta-hCG) levels.

Among 190 patients with metastatic testicular cancer who were treated by platinum-based combination chemotherapy and achieved complete remission, 4 (2.1%) developed gynecomastia 2 to 5 months after the cessation of chemotherapy.
