Disseminated opportunistic fungal disease in dogs: 10 cases (1982-1990).

Medical records of 10 dogs in which fungal infection was diagnosed between 1982 and 1990 were reviewed. In each dog, infection was determined to be caused by a single species of fungus, either Aspergillus terreus, Penicillium sp, Paecilomyces sp, Chrysosporium sp, or Pseudallescheria boydii. Nine dogs were German Shepherd Dogs; 1 was a German Shepherd Dog cross, and 9 were females. The most common clinical signs were signs of neck or back pain (9 dogs), weight loss (7 dogs), anorexia (6 dogs), pyrexia (6 dogs), paresis (3 dogs), and paralysis (3 dogs). All 10 dogs had evidence of multiple site

Growing Incidence of Non-Dermatophyte Onychomycosis in Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Non-dermatophyte onychomycosis (NDO) is caused by a wide range of mold fungi other than dermatophytes, and has been reported at various rates in different countries worldwide. Studies on the incidence of NDO in the community are essential for understanding its epidemiology and control, as well as for the appropriate treatment of these infections. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the incidence of NDO in Tehran, Iran, was compared to the incidence of onychomycoses due to dermatophytes and yeasts. METHODS: From 2014 through 2015, samples from a total of 1,069 patients with suspected funga

Disease patterns in field and bank vole populations during a cyclic decline in central Finland.

Declining field vole (Microtus agrestis) and bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) populations were sampled (117 field voles and 34 bank voles) in south-central Finland during the winter of 1988-89. The last surviving field voles were caught in April and bank voles in February. A subsample (16) of the April field voles were taken live to the laboratory for immunosuppression. The histopathology of the main internal organs and the presence of aerobic bacteria and certain parasites were studied. In the lungs, an increase in lymphoid tissue, probably caused by infections, was the most common finding

Chronic granulomatous lung infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Emmonsia sp.

A 64-year old farmer developed cough, dyspnoea on exertion, and recurrent febrile episodes. X-ray and CT scan revealed bilateral lower lobe opacities in his lungs. A transbronchial biopsy was performed and histopathological findings were interpreted as consistent with a pulmonary necrotizing clear-cell carcinoma and later as a Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Due to persistence of symptoms, six months later another lung biopsy was performed and a mould was cultured which was identified by 18S rDNA sequencing as Emmonsia sp. The patient showed some improvement under itraconazole treatment. This

Adiaspiromycosis due to Emmonsia crescens is widespread in native British mammals.

Adiaspiromycosis caused by Emmonsia crescens is primarily a respiratory disease affecting small mammals, especially members of the Families Rodentia, Carnivora and Mustelidae. Although isolated reports exist of adiaspiromycosis in free-living British wildlife, the extent of infection in wild animals in the UK, and the significance of any associated pathology are unclear. Here, we report the results of histopathological examination of lungs of free-living wild mammals from the south-west UK coupled with digestion of lung material in potassium hydroxide followed by centrifugation and microscopic

Plastic leachates lead to long-term toxicity in fungi and promote biodegradation of heterocyclic dye.

The hazardous effects of plastic and plastic leachates on organisms, even bacteria, have attracted widespread attention, but only a limited effort has been devoted to explore the response of fungi to plastic leachate induced by light irradiation. Here, we performed plastic leaching experiments to obtain leachates from polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP), and optical properties of plastic leachates were analysed to determine the influence of light conditions and plastic materials on that. The effects of plastic leachates on the production of fungal enzyme

Clinical and mycological features of onychomycosis in central Tunisia: a 22 years retrospective study (1986-2007).

Onychomycosis is the most frequently encountered nail disease and may be difficult to diagnose and treat. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, the clinical and mycological characteristics of onychomycosis in central Tunisia. It is a retrospective study performed over a 22-year period (1986-2007). It included 7151 patients (4709 women and 2442 men) with suspected fingernails and/or toenails onychomycosis. The patients were referred to the Mycology-Parasitology Laboratory of Farhat Hached hospital in Sousse for mycological examination. Both direct microscopy and culture o

An indoor air quality study of an alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) holding facility.

An environmental microbiologic investigation was conducted in an alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) holding facility in a zoo in the southeastern U.S. The facility had housed five alligators between March 1999 and February 2005. In the exhibit, one alligator died and all experienced poor health. It was hypothesized that environmental microbial contamination was associated with these issues. Samples were collected for fungal identification and quantification, microcystin analysis, and airborne mycotoxins. Analyses of air and water were conducted and an examination of the heating, ventilatio

Role of calcium in maintaining the heme environment of manganese peroxidase.

We previously demonstrated that manganese peroxidase from the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium was very susceptible to thermal inactivation due to the loss of calcium from the enzyme [Sutherland & Aust (1996) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 332, 128-134]. The structural changes that occur during thermal inactivation and the release of calcium from manganese peroxidase have now been characterized. Thermal inactivation caused distinct alterations in the heme environment and slight changes in the overall protein structure, both of which were reversed upon reactivation of the enzyme with calci

Laccase-peroxidase synergy modifies Kraft lignin structure and enhances the electrospinnability for bio-based materials.

Lignin is a promising renewable macromolecular feedstock for advanced carbon-based materials; however, its intrinsic molecular heterogeneity, relatively low molecular weight, and limited thermal stability often hinder direct fiber formation. This study demonstrates that a multienzymatic oxidative system, integrating laccase (O₂-driven, 6.8 × 10⁵ U L⁻¹), manganese peroxidase (Mn3+ shuttle, 1.5 × 10³ U L⁻¹), and lignin peroxidase (high redox potential, veratryl alcohol-free, 3.0 × 10⁴ U L⁻¹),effectively expands the electrospinnability window of Kraft lignin (KL). The redox-diverse enzymatic cock

Molecular taxonomy and epidemiology of Blastomyces and Histoplasma species.

Cladistic analysis of partial 26S rRNA sequences was used to estimate evolutionary distances among species and varieties of the dimorphic onygenalean genera Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Emmonsia, Histoplasma and Paracoccidioides. With the exception of Coccidioides, all genera were closely related, with about 5% base differences and even less (1-2%) between Blastomyces and Emmonsia. These data were supported by a teleomorph in the same genus Ajellomyces. In a phylogenic study of a wide range of ascomycete orders and families, Coccidioides immitis was found to be closest to Aphanoascus fulvescens

Acute conjunctivitis with episcleritis and anterior uveitis linked to adiaspiromycosis and freshwater sponges, Amazon region, Brazil, 2005.

We conducted an epidemiologic investigation of an outbreak of ocular disease among children to determine whether the disease was linked to Emmonsia sp., a rarely-reported fungus and an agent of adiaspiromycosis. Using an unmatched case-control study design, we compared case-patients with asymptomatic controls randomly selected from the population. Scleral biopsies were analyzed microscopically. Of 5,084 children examined, 99 case-patients were identified; mean age (+1 SD) was 11.0 +/- 4.4 years. Symptoms included photophobia (57%), ocular pain (42%), and blurred vision (40%). In the multivaria

Biological degradation of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.

Nitroaromatic compounds are xenobiotics that have found multiple applications in the synthesis of foams, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and explosives. These compounds are toxic and recalcitrant and are degraded relatively slowly in the environment by microorganisms. 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) is the most widely used nitroaromatic compound. Certain strains of Pseudomonas and fungi can use TNT as a nitrogen source through the removal of nitrogen as nitrite from TNT under aerobic conditions and the further reduction of the released nitrite to ammonium, which is incorporated into carbon skeletons.

Immunohistochemical characterization of tuberculous and non-tuberculous lesionsin naturally infected European badgers (Meles meles).

A panel of species cross-reactive antibodies was established for the immunohistochemical labelling of phagocytic and lymphoid cells in formalin-fixed normal badger tissues. These reagents were used to investigate the immunopathogenesis of both tuberculous and non-tuberculous granulomas in badgers. In normal badger tissues, antisera specific for the CD79a and CD79b epitopes strongly labelled follicular B lymphocytes and plasma cells in lymph nodes, bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue and Peyer's patches. Rabbit anti-dog IgG, IgM and IgA, and goat anti-human lambda light chain strongly labelled

[Rapid identification of Histoplasma capsulatum in culture lysates].

BACKGROUND: Histoplasma capsulatum is the agent of histoplasmosis, a deep mycosis mainly afflicting immunocompromised patients. Rapid identification of the fungus isolated from clinical specimens allows timely administration of specific treatment. AIM: To assess the ability of a dual PCR system targeting specific H. capsulatum DNA sites to identify fungal species in simple aqueous lysates from cultured fungi. METHODS: We analysed the performance of two independent PCR reactions designed to amplify fragments of 111 and 279 bp included in H. capsulatum-specific gene AgM. We used 248 H. capsula
