Systemic neglect hidden behind tolerance: the reproduction of vulnerability among aging heroin users within the community-based rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Contemporary Chinese drug governance is shifting its focus toward the rehabilitation of people who use drugs, prioritizing restorative over punitive measures. Moving beyond previous research that has primarily focused on the importance of community-based rehabilitation mechanisms in facilitating social reintegration, this study aimed to understand aging heroin users' experiences within broader systems of power, citizenship, and social exclusion in China. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted fieldwork in a city in the eastern region in China in 2020-2021 and int

Clinical competence, communication ability and adherence to choosing wisely recommendations for lipid reducing drug use in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Although lipid-lowering drugs are not recommended for primary prevention in patients 75+, prevalence of use is high and there is unexplained variation in prescribing between physicians. The objective of this study was to determine if physician communication ability and clinical competence are associated with prescribing lipid-lowering drugs for primary and secondary prevention. METHODS: We used a cohort of 4,501 international medical graduates, 161,214 U.S. Medicare patients with hyperlipidemia (primary prevention) and 49,780 patients with a history of cardiovascular disease (seco

Number of people in the United States experiencing ambulatory and independent living difficulties.

Estimating the characteristics of the "disabled" population is necessary for some governments and of interest to health researchers concerned with producing disability prevalence rates. Because generating easy-to-understand estimates of disability in the population is important, this article provides U.S. population estimates for two disability-related measures by using the 2009 to 2011 American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample file. The number of people who have "independent living" and "ambulatory" difficulties is calculated from a sample of 9,204,437 (representing >309 million p

'How can I fix my disrupted life?' Embodied experiences and biocitizenship among men who have sex with men living with HIV in China.

Drawing on qualitative data collected from men who have sex with men living with HIV in Fujian and Sichuan provinces in southeast and southwest China, respectively, this study aims to understand their lived experiences in the context of social norms, institutions and roles. We argue that informants encountered biographical disruption as a result of their diagnosed infection. They then painfully experienced different forms of social death on the one hand, while on the other, some also exerted agency/autonomy by strategically fighting for their rights and interests in both private and public dom

People with dementia, contributing to learning and teaching in higher education: Innovative practice.

Patients and service users have a well-established role in teaching and learning on professional qualifying programmes such as such as social work and nursing. However, the role of people with dementia in contributing to educational initiatives at higher educational level remains under explored. Four people with dementia were recruited as Expert by Lived Experience Tutors for the Foundation Degree in Dementia Studies at a University in the United Kingdom. They met students regularly to support their learning. We were interested in researching whether and how this enhanced the ability of studen

Sensory experiences of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

A patient with a 62-year history of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome describes 35 years of self-observation of the subjective events that precede, accompany, and follow the occurrence of symptomatic movements and sounds. Bodily sites become sensitized, and the movements (however bizarre) are intentional acts aimed at satisfying and eliminating unfulfilled sensations and urges. Sensory impressions may be projected onto other persons, objects, or imagined objects; these phantom sensations also demand discharge through actions. With vigilance and self-observation, barely emergent sensations can be

Breaking through social determinants of health: Results from a feasibility study of Imani Breakthrough, a community developed substance use intervention for Black and Latinx people.

Racial and ethnic disparities in substance use intervention design, implementation, and dissemination have been recognized for years, yet few intervention programs have been designed and conducted by and for people who use substances. Imani Breakthrough is a two-phase 22-week intervention developed by the community, run by facilitators with lived experience and church members, that is implemented in Black and Latinx church settings. This community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach is a concept developed in response to a call for action from the State of Connecticut Department of Men

The making of 'American': race and nation in neurasthenic discourse.

This paper considers the underexamined racial and nationalistic components of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century neurasthenic discourse to propose that neurasthenia was as much a discourse of modern American identity as it was a discourse of disease. By closely reading the medical and general texts which helped to popularize it, and by scrutinizing the context of its vogue and supposed subsequent decline, this paper shows how neurasthenia was intimately bound up with the era's politics of race, nationalism and citizenship. Countering traditional understandings of the disease, this st

Parenting, family life, and well-being among sexual minorities: nursing policy and practice implications.

Parenting and family life are fundamental social constructs in human society and in law and public policy. Family structures and support systems provide important economic and psychological advantages for parents as well as for their children. Stigma toward lesbian and gay parents often marginalize individuals in these families and restrict family members' full expression of social citizenship, humanity, and personhood. Stigma directly contributes to increased risk for substance abuse, anxiety, and depressive illness among both parents and children. This article reviews the relevant policy lit

Severe maternal morbidity among undocumented migrant women in the PreCARE prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of severe maternal outcomes among migrant women, considering both their legal status and birthplace; in Europe, migrant women, especially from sub-Saharan Africa, have higher risks of adverse maternal outcomes compared with non-migrants and legal status, a component of migrant condition, may be an important, and potentially actionable, risk factor. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Four maternity units around Paris in 2010-12. SAMPLE: A total of 9599 women with singleton pregnancies. METHODS: Legal status was categorised in four groups: reference grou

The influence of equitable access policies and socioeconomic factors on post-liver transplant survival.

BACKGROUND: Survival following liver transplant (LT) is influenced by a variety of factors, including donor risk factors and recipient disease burden and co-morbidities. It is difficult to separate these effects from those of socioeconomic factors, such as income or insurance. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) created equitable access policies, such as Share 35, to ensure that organs are distributed to individuals with greatest medical need; however, the effect of Share 35 on disparities in post-LT survival is not clear. This study aimed to (1) characterize associations between post-

Disability and corporeal (im)mobility: how interstate variation in Medicaid impacts the cross-state plans and pursuits of personal care attendant service users.

Purpose: This paper addresses how Medicaid personal care attendant (PCA) service users with physical disabilities experience barriers to cross-state movement arising from the interstate variation in these programs. Using the Moves in Context model, this analysis focuses on the structural-level influences on individual cross-state move trajectories. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 Medicaid PCA service users who were considering or pursuing cross-state moves motivated by opportunity. Questions addressed the cross-state move process; social participation; education and e

Association between mothers' screening uptake and daughters' HPV vaccination: a quasi-experimental study on the effect of an active invitation campaign.

OBJECTIVES: In Emilia-Romagna, the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign started in 2008 offering free vaccines for 1996 and 1997 cohorts. Systematic active invitation was implemented for the 1997 cohort. Our study aimed at measuring the impact of the active invitation campaign on HPV vaccine coverage and on coverage inequalities in 11-year-old girls. Second, we evaluated the effect of the HPV vaccination campaign on participation in cervical cancer screening by mothers of target girls. METHODS: We collected information on vaccination status for girls residing in Reggio Emilia in 20

"Harmonies of Form and Color": Race and the Prosthetic Body in Civil War America.

This article considers the cultural meanings of Civil War injury, particularly amputation, with regard to race. Putting elements of print and visual culture in conversation with the material history of prostheses, the article explores competing understandings of war-acquired disability as a unifying category that could cross the color line or, alternatively, as a site of (white) racial distinction. While a number of depictions of "Empty Sleeves" in the Northern press in the early years following the war depicted black veterans' battle injuries as proof of their fitness for citizenship, represe

Social Work and Prison Labor: A Restorative Model.

The prison industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States, fueled largely by prison privatization. UN guidelines and U.S. federal policy outline standards for prison workers, but evidence suggests that protections have been ignored or circumvented. The current prison labor system allows corporations to profit from punishment that is disproportionately allocated to people of color and the poor. This article provides a critical analysis of prison labor policies in the United States and proposes a position for social workers on the ethical and restorative use of inmate lab

Mobile migrants, mobile germs: migration, contagion, and boundary-building in Shenzhen, China after SARS.

Shenzhen, a city located on the border between Mainland China and Hong Kong, is populated primarily by internal Chinese migrants. After the 2003 SARS epidemic, the pressure in Shenzhen to contain infectious disease has been considerable. By engaging with issues of global biosecurity, migration and citizenship, and intersubjectivity in medicine, I argue that in their attempts to prevent another SARS and protect their own subject positions as modern, urban citizens, Shenzhen's public health professionals worked to maintain precarious boundaries between themselves and their city's majority migran

Examining retaliatory responses to justice violations and recovery attempts in teams.

We examine the effect of supervisor injustice directed toward 1 team member and argue not only that the violated member will retaliate against the supervisor but that team members will band together as a collective in order to retaliate. However, we argue that effects depend on which member is violated, such that violating a strategic core member will result in greater retaliation. We then test the effect of a supervisor recovery attempt, hypothesizing that a recovery will negatively impact retaliation and that the coreness of the violated member moderates this effect, such that it is more imp

Undocumented and unprotected immigrant women and children in harm's way.

The status of undocumented immigrants and current immigration legislative proposals are the subject of heated debate with both political and economic implications often overshadowing the needs of undocumented victims of abuse. This article will focus on the plight of undocumented women and children who are victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse perpetrated by their spouse or parent who is a citizen of the United States (by birth or naturalization). We will review the magnitude of this problem, provide a brief history of current legal protections and the potential for the U-Visa as a

Reclaiming Rights and Justice: Migrant Mobilization and Collective Resistance in Canada.

Migrant rights and justice movements in Canada have arisen within an increasingly hostile political and discursive environment marked by restrictive immigration policies, precarious labor regimes, and the racialized marginalization of migrant communities. Yet these conditions have also generated various forms of collective resistance that contest the exclusionary boundaries of citizenship, labor rights, and national belonging. Drawing on a case study of a migrant domestic workers' organization and Migrant Spring rallies in Vancouver, this article examines how migrant workers and their allies o

Substance use and psychological distress is related with accommodation status among homeless immigrants.

Immigrant homelessness constitutes a cruel expression of social exclusion. We analyzed the relation of sociodemographic characteristics with stressful life events, substance use and psychological distress, giving a special importance to the influence of the time spent on the streets and the accommodation status of 107 homeless immigrants. To this end, both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were combined. Discussion groups with care resources practitioners and service users, were followed by in depth interviews combined with psychometric questionnaires. Results show clear interrelation
