Trichinella spiralis infection ameliorates the severity of Citrobacter rodentium-induced experimental colitis in mice.

Trichinellosis is a food-borne zoonotic parasitic disease that causes serious harm to human health and the pig breeding industry. However, there are reports that Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) infection can treat autoimmune diseases, including enteritis and experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE). However, research on the mechanism of T. spiralis infection in infectious enteritis has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, this experiment used Citrobacter rodentium (C. rodentium) to induce colitis in mouse models and explored its underlying mechanisms. In this experiment, a total of 72 C5

Characterization of chromosomal qnrB and ampC alleles in Citrobacter freundii isolates from different origins.

The association of ESBLs (extended-spectrum beta-lactamases)/pAmpCs (plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases) with PMQR (plasmid mediated quinolone resistance) in gram-negative bacteria has been of great concern. The present study was performed to characterize the diversity, gene location, genetic context, and evolution of ampC and qnrB alleles in isolates of Citrobacter freundii. Fifteen isolates of C. freundii were identified from a total of 788 isolates of Enterobacteriaceae derived from humans, animals, animal food products, and the environment between 2010 and 2012. Co-existence of qnrB/ΔqnrB

Molecular analysis of type 3 fimbrial genes from Escherichia coli, Klebsiella and Citrobacter species.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common nosocomial infection in the United States and is caused by a range of uropathogens. Biofilm formation by uropathogens that cause CAUTI is often mediated by cell surface structures such as fimbriae. In this study, we characterised the genes encoding type 3 fimbriae from CAUTI strains of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Citrobacter koseri and Citrobacter freundii. RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis of the type 3 fimbrial genes (mrkABCD) from 39 strains revealed they clustered into five dis

From environmental reservoirs to clinical threats: the expanding resistome and genetic plasticity of Citrobacter spp.

BACKGROUND: Citrobacter spp., a genus of Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming rods, belong to the Enterobacteriaceae family. They are widely distributed in natural environments, including soil, water, and sewage, and are also part of the intestinal flora of humans and animals. These bacteria often act as opportunistic pathogens, posing a severe threat to immunocompromised and the intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Therefore, the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Citrobacter strains represents a rapidly escalating clinical concern. OBJECTIVE: This review discusses the eme

The pathogenic characterization of Citrobacter freundii and its activation on immune related genes in Macrobrachium nipponense.

Out breaks of mass mortalities occurred in Macrobrachium nipponense farms in Jintan county, Jiangsu Province. The bacterial isolates from M. nipponense exhibited the same phenotypic traits and biochemical characteristics, and were identified as Citrobacter freundii according to biochemical characteristics and molecular identification. The infection test revealed that the strain YG2 was pathogenic to M. nipponense, and the half lethal dose (LD50) was 3.35 × 105 CFU/mL at 7 d post-infection. Detection of virulence genes indicated that YG2 was positive for cfa, ureG, ureF, ureE, ureD, viaB, ompX,

Pectins that Structurally Differ in the Distribution of Methyl-Esters Attenuate Citrobacter rodentium-Induced Colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Pectins have anti-inflammatory properties on intestinal immunity through direct interactions on Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the small intestine or via stimulating microbiota-dependent effects in the large intestine. Both the degree of methyl-esterification (DM) and the distribution of methyl-esters (degree of blockiness; DB) of pectins contribute to this influence on immunity, but whether and how the DB impacts immunity through microbiota-dependent effects in the large intestine is unknown. Therefore, this study tests pectins that structurally differ in DB in a mouse model with

Citrobacter freundii and Acinetobacter baumanii infection in a patient with neoplastic lung disease - Case report.

An 85-year-old male with a tumour in his right lung was admitted to Internal Diseases Ward to continue treatment after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. An empiric antibiotic therapy with amoxycillin was introduced due to increased inflammation markers. Blood and sputum were collected. An abundant growth of AmpC β-lactamase-producing Citrobacter freundii was observed in culture grown from the sputum. The antibiogram showed retained sensitivity to fluoroquinolones. The therapy was modified by replacing β-lactam with ciprofloxacin. Neither clinical nor laboratory improvement were observed. Bloo

LMB-1 producing Citrobacter freundii from Argentina, a novel player in the field of MBLs.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales expressing OXA-48, KPC, NDM, VIM or IMP enzymes are increasingly reported worldwide. We have characterized LMB-1, a novel metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) of Ambler class B3 from Citrobacter freundii 164 (Cf164) clinical isolate from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Cf164 displayed reduced susceptibility to carbapenems but gave inconsistent results with carbapenemase confirmatory tests, indicating the presence of a weak carbapenemase. Analysis of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of Cf164 using Resfinder revealed four β-lactamase genes coding for CTX-M-8, PER-2, TEM-1 and

EspF is crucial for Citrobacter rodentium-induced tight junction disruption and lethality in immunocompromised animals.

Attaching/Effacing (A/E) bacteria include human pathogens enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and their murine equivalent Citrobacter rodentium (CR), of which EPEC and EHEC are important causative agents of foodborne diseases worldwide. While A/E pathogen infections cause mild symptoms in the immunocompetent hosts, an increasing number of studies show that they produce more severe morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised and/or immunodeficient hosts. However, the pathogenic mechanisms and crucial host-pathogen interactions during A/E pathogen infecti

A murine colitis model developed using a combination of dextran sulfate sodium and Citrobacter rodentium.

Adult mice were treated with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and infected with Citrobacter rodentium for developing a novel murine colitis model. C57BL/6N mice (7-week-old) were divided into four groups. Each group composed of control, dextran sodium sulfate-treated (DSS), C. rodentium-infected (CT), and DSS-treated and C. rodentium-infected (DSS-CT) mice. The DSS group was administered 1% DSS in drinking water for 7 days. The CT group was supplied with normal drinking water for 7 days and subsequently infected with C. rodentium via oral gavage. The DSS-CT group was supplied with 1% DSS in drinki

The role of Galectin-1 and Galectin-3 in the mucosal immune response to Citrobacter rodentium infection.

Despite their abundance at gastrointestinal sites, little is known about the role of galectins in gut immune responses. We have therefore investigated the Citrobacter rodentium model of colonic infection and inflammation in Galectin-1 or Galectin-3 null mice. Gal-3 null mice showed a slight delay in colonisation after inoculation with C. rodentium and a slight delay in resolution of infection, associated with delayed T cell, macrophage and dendritic cell infiltration into the gut mucosa. However, Gal-1 null mice also demonstrated reduced T cell and macrophage responses to infection. Despite th

Clearance of Citrobacter rodentium requires B cells but not secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) or IgM antibodies.

Citrobacter rodentium, a murine model pathogen for human enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, predominantly colonizes the lumen and mucosal surface of the colon and cecum and causes crypt hyperplasia and mucosal inflammation. Mice infected with C. rodentium develop a secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) response, but the role of B cells or secretory antibodies in host defense is unknown. To address this question, we conducted oral C. rodentium infections in mice lacking B cells, IgA, secreted IgM, polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR), or J chain. Normal mice showed peak bacterial numbers in colon and feces

Resistance to oxyimino beta-lactams due to a mutation of chromosomal beta-lactamase in Citrobacter freundii.

The duplicative mutation of an Ala-Val-Arg sequence at positions 208 to 210 in the loop structure of Enterobacter cloacae class C beta-lactamase caused substrate specificity extension to oxyimino beta-lactam antibiotics and this chromosomal mutation provided bacterial cells with high resistance to the beta-lactams (M. Nukaga et al, 1995, J. Biol. Chem. 270, 5729-5735). In order to confirm the universality of this phenomenon among other class C beta-lactamases, the duplicative mutation was applied to a class C beta-lactamase of Citrobacter freundii, which has 74% homology to the E. cloacae beta

A Case of Infective Endocarditis Caused by Citrobacter koseri: Unraveling a Rare Pathogen and Dire Outcome.

Citrobacter koseri (formerly classified as Citrobacter diversus) is a gram-negative bacillus (GNB) that occurs as an opportunistic pathogen in neonates and immunocompromised patients. Citrobacter species have been implicated in nosocomial settings leading to infections involving the urinary tract, respiratory tract, liver, biliary tract, meninges, and even in rarer conditions-blood stream infection and infective endocarditis (IE). Gram-negative bacilli are responsible for 3% to 4% of all IE cases and have been traditionally associated with intravenous drug users. Patients with non-HACEK (speci

S100A4 contributes to colitis development by increasing the adherence of Citrobacter rodentium in intestinal epithelial cells.

S100A4 has been implicated in cancer and several inflammatory diseases, but its role in inflammatory bowel disease has not been well investigated. Here, upon infection with Citrobacter rodentium, a model for enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection in humans, induced the infiltration of a large number of S100A4+ cells into the colon in wild type (WT) mice. Deficiency of S100A4 reduced weight loss, bacterial colonization and colonic pathology. Furthermore, the expression of inflammatory cytokines and the recruitment of macrophages and neutrophils also decreased significantly in S100A4 knock
