Biofilm Formation by Pathogens Causing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia at Intensive Care Units in a Tertiary Care Hospital: An Armor for Refuge.

BACKGROUND: Emerging threat of drug resistance among pathogens causing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) has resulted in higher hospital costs, longer hospital stays, and increased hospital mortality. Biofilms in the endotracheal tube of ventilated patients act as protective shield from host immunity. They induce chronic and recurrent infections that defy common antibiotics. This study intended to determine the biofilm produced by pathogens causing VAP and their relation with drug resistance. METHODS: Bronchoalveolar lavage and deep tracheal aspirates (n = 70) were obtained from the patie

Bacterial vampirism mediated through taxis to serum.

Bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae are associated with gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and bacteremia and are a leading cause of death, from sepsis, for individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases. The bacterial behaviors and mechanisms underlying why these bacteria are prone to bloodstream entry remains poorly understood. Herein, we report that clinical isolates of non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica serovars, Escherichia coli, and Citrobacter koseri are rapidly attracted toward sources of human serum. To simulate GI bleeding, we utilized a custom injection-based microfluidics device and

Insights into evolution and coexistence of the colibactin- and yersiniabactin secondary metabolite determinants in enterobacterial populations.

The bacterial genotoxin colibactin interferes with the eukaryotic cell cycle by causing dsDNA breaks. It has been linked to bacterially induced colorectal cancer in humans. Colibactin is encoded by a 54 kb genomic region in Enterobacteriaceae. The colibactin genes commonly co-occur with the yersiniabactin biosynthetic determinant. Investigating the prevalence and sequence diversity of the colibactin determinant and its linkage to the yersiniabactin operon in prokaryotic genomes, we discovered mainly species-specific lineages of the colibactin determinant and classified three main structural se

Intussusception of a small bowel large B-cell lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: The colibactin and cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1 (Cnf 1) are toxins with cell cycle modulating effects that contribute to tumorgenesis and hyperproliferation. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and pathologic effects of Cnf 1 and colibactin among hemolytic uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). The bioinformatics approach incorporated in this study aimed to expand the domain of the in vitro study and explore the prevalence of both toxins among other bacterial species. A total of 125 E. coli isolates were recovered from UTIs patients. The isolates were tested for their

Uncaria tomentosa extract exerts antimicrobial activity against boar seminal bacteria and influences sperm resilience under different conditions.

Uncaria tomentosa (UT) or cat's claw, is a vine belonging to the Rubiaceae family and native to South and Central America. Various parts of the plant, including bark, showed many therapeutic activities (e.g., antioxidant and antibacterial), but the in vitro effects on gametes have still not been investigated. During boar semen storage for artificial insemination purposes, oxidative stress and bacterial contamination negatively affect sperm quality. In this study, we evaluated the tolerance of boar sperm to UT ethanolic extract at four concentrations (1.6 to 0.025 μg/mL). The analyses were carr

Extended spectrum ß-lactamase- and constitutively AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae on fresh produce and in the agricultural environment.

The attribution of fresh produce to the overall community-associated exposure of humans to ESBL- or AmpC-producing bacteria is currently unknown. To address this issue, the prevalence of ESBL- and AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae on fresh produce produced in the Netherlands was determined. Seven vegetable types that are consumed raw were selected: blanched celery, bunched carrots, chicory, endive, iceberg lettuce, mushrooms, and radish. The vegetables were mostly obtained from supermarkets. To determine whether the agricultural environment is the source of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae on

Ferroptosis in Osteoarthritis: Current Understanding.

We describe two cases of wound infections of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), one wild and one captive, in which Lonepinella-like organisms were involved. The wild adult koala was captured with bite wound injuries, as part of a koala population management program in Queensland, Australia. In both cases, there was evidence of physical trauma causing the initial wound. The captive koala suffered injury from the cage wire, and the wild koala had injuries suggestive of intermale fighting. Gram-negative bacteria isolated from both cases proved to be challenging to identify using routine diagnostic

In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity of Some Medicinal Plants against Human Pathogenic Bacteria.

The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, as well as the evolution of new strains of disease causing agents, are of great concern to the global health community. Effective treatment of a disease entails the development of new pharmaceuticals or some potential source of novel drugs. Commonly used medicinal plants of our community could be an excellent source of drugs to fight off this problem. This study is focused on exploring the antimicrobial properties of the plants that are commonly being used as traditional medicines. The antimicrobial potential of four different plant extracts w

Induction of plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase DHA-1 by piperacillin/tazobactam and other β-lactams in Enterobacteriaceae.

Chromosomal AmpC β-lactamase induction by several types of β-lactams has been reported, but not enough data are available on DHA-1 β-lactamase, a plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamase. Therefore, we evaluated the DHA-1 β-lactamase induction by various antibiotics including piperacillin/tazobactam (PIP/TZB) in this study. Six strains (Enterobacter cloacae 2 strains, Citrobacter freundii 1 strain, Serratia marcescens 2 strain, and Morganella morganii 1 strain) possessing chromosomal inducible AmpC β-lactamase were used as controls. Four strains (Escherichia coli 2 strains, Klebsiella pneumoniae 1 st

Successful rescue of a patient with extensive lethal-dose aluminum phosphide poisoning complicated by multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.

Aluminum phosphide poisoning is a highly lethal toxicological emergency associated with an extremely high mortality rate, and no specific antidote is currently available. Aluminum phosphide rapidly releases phosphine gas after coming into contact with gastric acid, which strongly inhibits mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, leading to severe cellular metabolic disorder, lactic acidosis, refractory shock, and progressive multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. In severe cases, the mortality rate can approach 100%. We report the case of a man in his early 40s who intentionally ingested 25.2 g of al
