[Progress in MR imaging: differential diagnosis of infectious and inflammatory diseases with MR imaging].

MR imaging is useful for diagnosis of infectious and inflammatory diseases. Diffusion weighted images (DWI) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images revealed hyperintense signal changes in the anterior striata and cortices in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which were characteristic. In patients with nonherpetic and non-paraneoplastic acute limbic encephalitis, DWI and FLAIR images showed hyperintense changes in the hippocampi, amygdales, cingulate gyri, and occasionally claustrum, but not in the anterior and lateral temporal cortices, which were often involved in herpes

Stress increases brain-derived neurotropic factor messenger ribonucleic acid in the hypothalamus and pituitary.

Brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) is a member of the nerve growth factor family that is important for neuronal survival and plasticity. We recently demonstrated that stress decreases BDNF messenger RNA (mRNA) levels in the hippocampus, which raises the possibility that BDNF may play a role in regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether BDNF expression is present and influenced by stress in other brain areas relevant to control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Using in situ hybridization, we found that BDNF mRNA is p

Super-refractory Status Epilepticus in Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome Triggered by Influenza A: A Pediatric Case Report.

Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) is a rare cause of new-onset refractory status epilepticus following a febrile illness. We report the case of a previously healthy three-year-old boy who developed focal seizures in the context of a confirmed Influenza A infection, rapidly progressing to super-refractory status epilepticus. Initial investigations, including cerebrospinal fluid analysis and neuroimaging, were unremarkable. Despite early multimodal therapy with multiple antiseizure medications, continuous anesthetic infusions, immunomodulatory treatments, and a ketogenic diet,

Mechanisms of Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis and Prevention: The Brain, Neural Pathology, N-methyl-D-aspartate Receptors, Tau Protein and Other Risk Factors.

The characteristic features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are the appearance of extracellular amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the intracellular environment, neuronal death and the loss of synapses, all of which contribute to cognitive decline in a progressive manner. A number of hypotheses have been advanced to explain AD. Abnormal tau phosphorylation may contribute to the formation of abnormal neurofibrillary structures. Many different structures are susceptible to AD, including the reticular formation, the nuclei in the brain stem (e.g., raphe nucleus), thalamus, hypot

Neural activity in afferent projections to the infralimbic cortex is associated with individual differences in the recall of fear extinction.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by an impaired ability to extinguish fear responses to trauma-associated cues. Studies in humans and non-human animals point to differences in the engagement of certain frontal cortical regions as key mediators determining whether or not fear extinction is successful, however the neural circuit interactions that dictate the differential involvement of these regions are not well understood. To better understand how individual differences in extinction recall are reflected in differences in neural circuit activity, we labeled projections to

Whole Brain Mapping of Long-Range Direct Input to Glutamatergic and GABAergic Neurons in Motor Cortex.

Long-range neuronal circuits play an important role in motor and sensory information processing. Determining direct synaptic inputs of excited and inhibited neurons is important for understanding the circuit mechanisms involved in regulating movement. Here, we used the monosynaptic rabies tracing technique, combined with fluorescent micro-optical sectional tomography, to characterize the brain-wide input to the motor cortex (MC). The whole brain dataset showed that the main excited and inhibited neurons in the MC received inputs from similar brain regions with a quantitative difference. With 3

Claustroneocortical projections studied in the cat by means of multiple retrograde fluorescent tracing.

The topographical interrelations of claustroneocortical cells and their degree of divergent collateralization were investigated in cat by means of retrograde fluorescent double labeling. The tracers Fast Blue (FB) and Nuclear Yellow (NY) were injected in several combinations in two different cortical fields. FB-labeled and NY-labeled cells were found in all cases in the insular portion of the ipsilateral claustrum (CII). The distributions of labeled cells confirmed the organization reported in previous studies. In some cases the two labeled cell populations were segregated in different parts o

Topographical distribution of the cerebral lesions in mice infected with Plasmodium berghei.

In the mouse P. berghei malaria model systematic studies were carried out on the relationship between the type and the topographical distribution of the brain lesion in cerebral malaria. As previously stated for pernicious P. falciparum malaria in man, petechial haemorrhage was not the sole morphologic lesion. In addition to severe brain oedema, microthrombosis, sludging of mononuclear cells, arteriolar spasms, scattered disturbances of the microcirculation, and the occasional proliferation of gliocytes were the prevailing morphologic changes. Pronounced perivascular oedema with compression of

Altered neural processing of negative stimuli in people with internet gaming disorder: fMRI evidence from the comparison with recreational game users.

BACKGROUND: Abundant clinical studies have suggested that emotion dysregulation seems to be the essential pathogenesis for Internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, the neural mechanism of emotion regulation for IGD is still unclear. METHODS: Subjective evaluation and fMRI data were collected from 50 subjects (IGD: 24; recreational game user (RGU): 26) while they were performing an emotion reappraisal task. We collected and compared their brain features during emotion processing of different visual stimuli. RESULTS: Higher activation in the left dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), right

Lesion localization of global aphasia without hemiparesis by overlapping of the brain magnetic resonance images.

Global aphasia without hemiparesis is a striking stroke syndrome involving language impairment without the typically manifested contralateral hemiparesis, which is usually seen in patients with global aphasia following large left perisylvian lesions. The objective of this study is to elucidate the specific areas for lesion localization of global aphasia without hemiparesis by retrospectively studying the brain magnetic resonance images of six patients with global aphasia without hemiparesis to define global aphasia without hemiparesis-related stroke lesions before overlapping the images to vis

Primate model of cerebral hematoma.

Using specific anesthetic agents, permanent segmental occlusion of the proximal middle cerebral artery (MCA) causes ischemic infarction limited to the putamen and other deep hemispheral structures in primates. Using this model, 25 rhesus monkeys were subjected to acute arterial hypertension before, during and up to 5 days after onset of MCA occlusion in order to reevaluate the possible role of the ischemic process in pathogenesis of cerebral hemorrhage. Norepinephrine infusion induced prompt rapid rise in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and intracranial pressure (ICP) limited to the duration of i

The spatial transcriptome of the late-stage embryonic and postnatal mouse brain reveals spatiotemporal molecular markers.

The neocortical development process includes cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and maturation, supported by precise genetic regulation. To understand these processes at the cellular and molecular levels, it is necessary to characterize the fundamental anatomical structures by gene expression. However, markers established in the adult brain sometimes behave differently in the fetal brain, actively changing during development. The spatial transcriptome is a powerful analytical method that enables sequence analysis while retaining spatial information. However, a deeper understanding

Direct Parabrachial-Cortical Connectivity.

The parabrachial nucleus (PB) in the upper brain stem tegmentum includes several neuronal subpopulations with a wide variety of connections and functions. A subpopulation of PB neurons projects axons directly to the cerebral cortex, and limbic areas of the cerebral cortex send a return projection directly to the PB. We used retrograde and Cre-dependent anterograde tracing to identify genetic markers and characterize this PB-cortical interconnectivity in mice. Cortical projections originate from glutamatergic PB neurons that contain Lmx1b (81%), estrogen receptor alpha (26%), and Satb2 (20%), p

Development and evolution of the collopallium in amniotes: a new hypothesis of field homology.

Embryological development is uniquely positioned to illuminate both hodology in adult brains and its inherited genetic bases. The lateral corner of the lateral ventricle in mammals is a particularly crucial region where cell migration patterns, transiently formed connections, axonal growth kinetics, and fasciculation patterns are complex and interactive. Based on hodology, the sauropsid anterior dorsal ventricular ridge (ADVR) has been proposed as the homologue on a one-to-one basis of the mammalian lateral neocortex (LNC), the basolateral amygdalar complex (BLA), or the claustrum-endopiriform

Neuronal changes during forebrain evolution in amniotes: an evolutionary developmental perspective.

Embryology is the interface of genetic inheritance and phenotypic expression in adult forms, and as such is uniquely positioned to illuminate both. Embryonic cell migration pattern, transient connectivity, axonal growth kinetics and fasciculation patterns can clearly be substantially impacted at the striatocortical junction, which appears to be critical for telencephalic development. Similarly, the big questions concerning pallial evolution in amniotes all involve the pivotal region at the pallial-subpallial boundary, an area where complex developmental cross-currents may be involved in the sp

Biomarkers of new onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) and febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES).

New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE) and Febrile Infection-Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES) present significant diagnostic challenges. To date, no single testing modality has emerged as the standard to confirm or exclude NORSE/FIRES. However, there has been increasing characterization of NORSE/FIRES by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalogram (EEG), and serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. Here we briefly summarized the MRI abnormalities including "The claustrum sign". Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, a novel MRI sequence, highlighted increased blood-brain ba

Voxel based morphometric and diffusion tensor imaging analysis in male bipolar patients with first-episode mania.

OBJECTIVES: Structural abnormality of both gray and white matter has been detected in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). But results were greatly inconsistent across studies which were most likely attributed to heterogeneous populations as well as processing techniques. The present study aimed to investigate brain structural and microstructural alterations in a relative homogenous sample of bipolar mania. METHODS: 3D T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were conducted in 18 patients with BD and 27 healthy volunteers. Gray matter (GM) and white matt

Which structure generates paradoxical (REM) sleep: The brainstem, the hypothalamus, the amygdala or the cortex?

Paradoxical or Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (PS) is a state characterized by REMs, EEG activation and muscle atonia. In this review, we discuss the contribution of brainstem, hypothalamic, amygdalar and cortical structures in PS genesis. We propose that muscle atonia during PS is due to activation of glutamatergic neurons localized in the pontine sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus (SLD) projecting to glycinergic/GABAergic pre-motoneurons localized in the ventro-medial medulla (vmM). The SLD PS-on neurons are inactivated during wakefulness and slow-wave sleep by PS-off GABAergic neurons locali

Alterations in the Expression of the Genes Responsible for the Synthesis of Heparan Sulfate in Brains With Alzheimer Disease.

The saccharide chains of heparan sulfate appear to be involved in several aspects Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis. Their structural complexity is due to the expression of different isoenzymes. We studied the differential transcription of heparan sulfate chain biosynthesis in AD brains, analyzing different brain regions in patients with different extents of AD pathology. The transcriptomic study was performed by RT-PCR using samples of amygdala, anterior hippocampus, posterior hippocampus, claustrum, calcarine fissure, globus pallidus and cerebellum from patients with mild, moderate, or sev
