Heavy metals alter the electrokinetic properties of bacteria, yeasts, and clay minerals.

The electrokinetic patterns of four bacterial species (Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Agrobacterium radiobacter), two yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans), and two clay minerals (montmorillonite and kaolinite) in the presence of the chloride salts of the heavy metals, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn, and of Na and Mg were determined by microelectrophoresis. The cells and kaolinite were net negatively charged at pH values above their isoelectric points (pI) in the presence of Na, Mg, Hg, and Pb at an ionic strength (mu) of 3 x 10(-4); montmo

Clay Nanomaterials Sorbents for Cleaner Water: A Sustainable Application for the Mining Industry.

The increasing shortage of drinking water, driven by reduced rainfall and the intensification of industrial and agricultural activities, has raised justified concerns about the quantity and quality of available water resources. These sectors not only demand high water consumption but also discharge large amounts of toxic substances such as organic matter, metal ions and inorganic anions, posing risks to both public health and the environment. This study evaluated the effectiveness of clay-based nanomaterials in the treatment of contaminated industrial wastewater from the mining sector. The mat

Analytical and Antimicrobial Characterization of Zn-Modified Clays Embedding Thymol or Carvacrol.

Carvacrol and thymol are broad-spectrum natural antimicrobial agents. To reduce their volatility and improve their antimicrobial performance, synergistic systems were prepared loading the active molecules in zinc-modified clays. Montmorillonite (MMT) and zeolite (ZEO) were modified with zinc ions (ZnMMT and ZnZEO), with well-known antimicrobial properties, and then with carvacrol or thymol, reaching the 26 ± 3% and 33 ± 2% w/w of loading, respectively. The resulting hybrid materials were characterized by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, TGA, and GC-MS to evaluate carvacrol/thymol release in simulating food ma

Development and characterization of chlorophyll-amended montmorillonite clays for the adsorption and detoxification of benzene.

After disasters, such as forest fires and oil spills, high levels of benzene (> 1 ppm) can be detected in the water, soil, and air surrounding the disaster site, which poses a significant health risk to human, animal, and plant populations in the area. While remediation methods with activated carbons have been employed, these strategies are limited in their effectiveness due to benzene's inherent stability and limited retention to most surfaces. To address this problem, calcium and sodium montmorillonite clays were amended with a mixture of chlorophyll (a) and (b); their binding profile and ab

Praziquantel-Clays as Accelerated Release Systems to Enhance the Low Solubility of the Drug.

Praziquantel is an antiparasitic drug indicated for the treatment of the schistosomiasis disease. This drug has very low aqueous solubility, requiring high oral doses for its administration which gives rise to side effects, therapeutic noncompliance and the appearance of resistant forms of the parasite. Clay minerals, like sepiolite and montmorillonite, are innocuous, non-toxic, biocompatible and low-cost excipients. Additionally, clays have high adsorbent properties that allow them to encapsulate drugs in nanometric spaces present in the channels in the case of the sepiolite or between the la

Modified clay mineral: A method for the remediation of the mercury-polluted paddy soil.

Rice is easy to accumulate mercury (Hg), especially methylmercury (MeHg) with high toxicity, and this leads to a serious health risk for residents in some Hg-polluted areas of Asia. Thus, there is an urgent need to find soil remediation techniques that can both guarantee agricultural production and protect human health in these Hg-contaminated areas. In this study, montmorillonite (Mont) and medical stone (Med) were modified by a thiol-based material (-SH) and by chitosan to obtain modified clay mineral adsorbents. Pot experiments were then performed to explore their ability to reduce the leve

Swelling Inhibition of Liquid Crystalline Colloidal Montmorillonite and Beidellite Clays by DNA.

Exploring the interaction of nucleic acids with clay minerals is important to understand such issues as the persistence in soils of biomolecules and the appearance of genetic polymers in prebiotic environments. Colloidal dispersions of double stranded DNA and clay nanosheets may also provide interesting model systems to study the statistical physics of mixtures of semi-flexible rods and plates. Here, we show that adding very small amounts of DNA to liquid-crystalline montmorillonite and beidellite smectite clay suspensions strongly widens the isotropic/nematic phase coexistence region. An Evidence-Based Review on Medicinal Value of Clays in Traditional Persian Medicine.

The use of earths and clays for medical purposes dates back to antiquity. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in researches on traditional remedies in the hope of discovering new drug. Iran is an ancient country with a medical backbone acquired from the experiences of ancient Persian scholars, who had made a great contribution to the development of the medical sciences. Many medical and pharmaceutical books by early Persian scientists still exist and may have the potential of leading researchers to new drug discoveries. Owing to the emergence of new and antimicrobial-resista

First Observation of Physically Capturing and Maneuvering Bacteria using Magnetic Clays.

A new class of nanohybrids composed of structurally exfoliated silicate platelets and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles was synthesized and shown to be capable of capturing microbes in liquid microbiological media. Nanoscale silicate platelets with an approximate thickness of 1.0 nm were prepared from the naturally occurring mineral clays montmorillonite and mica; these clays yielded platelets with lateral dimensions on the order of 80-100 nm and 300-1000 nm, respectively. The magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, approximately 8.3 nm in diameter, were coated in situ onto the silicates during the synt

Neoformation of clay in lateral root catchments of mallee eucalypts: a chemical perspective.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A previous paper (Annals of Botany 103: 673-685) described formation of clayey pavements in lateral root catchments of eucalypts colonizing a recently formed sand dune in south-west Western Australia. Here chemical and morphological aspects of their formation at the site are studied. METHODS: Chemical and physical examinations of soil cores through pavements and sand under adjacent heath assessed build-up of salts, clay and pH changes in or below pavements. Relationships of root morphology to clay deposition were examined and deposits subjected to scanning electron micros

Flocculation of colloidal clay by bacterial polysaccharides: effect of macromolecule charge and structure.

The molecular mechanism of montmorillonite flocculation by bacterial polysaccharides was investigated, with special emphasis on the effect of carboxylic charges in the macromolecules on the mechanisms of interaction with the clay surface. An indirect way to quantify the energy of interaction was used, by comparing the flocculation ability of variously acidic polysaccharides. Data on tensile strength of aggregates in diluted suspension were collected by timed size measurements in the domain 0.1-600 microm, using laser diffraction. The flow behavior of settled aggregates was studied by rheology

Molecular Simulation Studies of CO2-CH4-H2O Ternary Geological Fluids in Clay Confinements.

Molecular understanding of the CO2-CH4-H2O mixture in clay interlayers provides crucial insights into many geochemical processes in CO2-enchanced oil/gas recovery and CO2 subsurface sequestrations. In this work, we developed new molecular models by optimizing the unlike-pair Lennard-Jones (LJ) parameters for the CO2-H2O, CH4-H2O and CO2-CH4 binary mixtures. The optimization utilizes the coupling parameter method in combination with Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) simulations. The transferability of binary-derived parameters to ternary CO2-CH4-H2O system is further demonstrated. These optimiz

Porcelain-clay-inspired microsphere hydrogel bioink facilitates bone regeneration via immune-osteogenic regulation.

High-quality regeneration of large bone defects depends on the coordinated integration of immunomodulation, osteogenic signal presentation, and structural support. However, conventional bioinks often struggle to simultaneously fulfill these key requirements, particularly in terms of the effective utilization of low-dose bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and matching biomechanical interfaces. Inspired by the shaping behavior of traditional porcelain clay, we developed a clay-like microsphere-based hydrogel bioink that integrates biomimetic immunomodulation, low-dose osteogenic factor deliver

Hierarchically 2D Porous Nanosheets Derived from Clay Minerals for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Capture.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage technologies are key methods for mitigating the greenhouse effect. The development of high-performance adsorbents using abundant natural minerals represents a promising approach to achieving cost-effective CO2 capture. In this work, we report a simple and scalable strategy for preparing two-dimensional (2D) porous nanosheets from the natural layered clay mineral vermiculite as the raw material, via liquid-phase exfoliation and acid etching. The clay-based 2D porous nanosheets exhibited a high specific surface area, a hierarchical porous structure, and m

Experimental Study on the Incipient Movement of Muddy Clay under Different Salinity Conditions.

In order to understand the incipient movement of muddy clay under different salinity conditions, three series of flume tests were performed on incipient movement of muddy clay, including tests on incipient movement of salt-free clay mud under salt water conditions (salt water-salt-free clay mud), incipient movement of salt clay mud under salt water conditions (salt water-salt clay mud), and incipient movement of salt clay mud under freshwater conditions (freshwater-salt clay mud), using a circulating flume, in which the salinity of the water body or cohesive sediment varies from 0 to 40%. Trichloroethylene remediation using zero-valent iron with kaolin clay, activated carbon and bacteria.

Nanoscale particles of zero-valent iron were used to form a permeable reactive barrier whose performance in dechlorinating a solution of trichloroethylene was compared with that of a barrier formed from limestone. The iron was combined with kaolin by calcination. The test liquid contained sewage sludge, and also added NH4Cl and KH2PO4. The average removal rates of trichloroethylene and phosphorus over 365 days both exceeded 94%. Chemical oxygen demand was reduced by 92% and ammonium nitrogen by 43.6%. All were significantly greater than the removals with the limestone barrier. The ceramsite ba

Electrospun microfiber membranes embedded with drug-loaded clay nanotubes for sustained antimicrobial protection.

Guided tissue regeneration/guided bone regeneration membranes with sustained drug delivery were developed by electrospinning drug-loaded halloysite clay nanotubes doped into poly(caprolactone)/gelatin microfibers. Use of 20 wt % nanotube content in fiber membranes allowed for 25 wt % metronidazole drug loading in the membrane. Nanotubes with a diameter of 50 nm and a length of 600 nm were aligned within the 400 nm diameter electrospun fibers, resulting in membranes with doubling of tensile strength along the collector rotating direction. The halloysite-doped membranes acted as barriers against

Manganese(II)-catalyzed and clay-minerals-mediated reduction of chromium(VI) by citrate.

Unlike lower valent iron (Fe), the potential role of lower valent manganese (Mn) in the reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in soil is poorly documented. In this study, we report that citrate along with Mn(II) and clay minerals (montmorillonite and kaolinite) reduce Cr(VI) both in aqueous phase and in the presence of dissolved organic carbon (SDOC) extracted from a forest soil. The reduction was favorable at acidic pH (up to pH 5) and followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The citrate (10 mM) + Mn(II) (182.02 μM) + clay minerals (3% w/v) system in SDOC accounted for complete redu

Deliquescence behavior of internally mixed clay and salt aerosols by optical extinction measurements.

Internal mixtures of montmorillonite, a clay component of mineral dust, with sodium chloride or ammonium sulfate were studied optically using cavity ring down spectroscopy. The effects of the addition of the clay to the optically observed deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) and water uptake of these salts were considered by investigating a series of different salt mass fractions. In most cases, montmorillonite alters the hygroscopic properties, lowering the DRH in comparison to the pure salt, and causes the particles to transition from solid to liquid at a lower relative humidity than is exp
