[Colorectal cancer diagnosis method based on dynamic gland-aware and tissue soft-clustering].

In colorectal cancer histopathology, the collaborative perception of microscopic and salient lesions is critical for effective diagnosis and improved patient prognosis. However, existing deep learning methods struggle to simultaneously capture microscopic glandular disorganization and salient tissue lesions. To address this limitation, a colorectal cancer diagnosis network based on dynamic gland-aware and tissue soft-clustering (DGTSNet) is proposed. The method employs dynamic gland-aware convolution to explicitly perceive gland boundaries and dynamically adjust sampling offsets, while incorpo

MapperEEG: A topological approach to brain state clustering in EEG recordings.

BACKGROUND: Topological data analysis (TDA) has exploded as a tool for analyzing and making sense of high dimensional datasets across a variety of fields. Mapper is a tool from TDA that captures low-dimensional structure from high-dimensional data, precisely the approach needed to capture relevant information from high-dimensional neural time series. Electrical potential scalp recording, or electroencephalography (EEG), is routinely used in clinical applications and research studies thanks to its noninvasive nature, relatively inexpensive equipment, and high temporal resolution. But, it is pro

Multi-view graph-regularized deep metric subspace clustering network.

Multi-view subspace clustering has progressed significantly by using deep neural networks to handle nonlinear data representations. A recent advancement, the Multi-view Self-Expressive Subspace Clustering (MSESC) network, achieves markedly higher computational efficiency by substituting the traditional self-expression layer with a deep metric learning approach. Nevertheless, MSESC still suffers from two notable limitations: it fails to adequately capture the high-order geometric structures inherent in multi-view data, and it lacks effective guidance from the underlying clustering distribution.

A computational intelligence approach for classifying dental caries in X-ray images using integrated fuzzy C-means clustering with feature reduction and a weighted matrix scheme.

Classifying dental caries in X-ray images poses several challenges that must be addressed to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. However, dental X-rays often have low contrast, making it difficult to distinguish between healthy and decayed regions, especially in the early stages of caries. This paper uses computational intelligence to present a new approach to classifying dental caries in X-ray images. The traditional Fuzzy C-means (FCM) segmentation algorithms have limitations, such as treating all feature components equally important. This can lead to misclassificatio

Psoriasis Lesion Detection Using Hybrid Seeker Optimization-based Image Clustering.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of people suffering from psoriasis. For proper psoriasis diagnosis, psoriasis lesion segmentation is a prerequisite for quantifying the severity of this disease. However, segmentation of psoriatic lesions cannot be evaluated just by visual inspection as they exhibit inter and intra variability among the severity classes. Most of the approaches currently pursued by dermatologists are subjective in nature. The existing conventional clustering algorithm for objective segmentation of psoriasis lesion suffers from limitati

HDCluster: High-Degree Graph Clustering for Robust Analysis of Single Molecule Localization Microscopy.

Clustering is a fundamental task in data analysis: grouping similar objects together into distinguishable subsets. Here, we introduce HDCluster, a novel high-degree graph-based clustering algorithm designed to effectively and rapidly handle various real-world clustering applications, particularly in the context of super-resolution single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). HDCluster efficiently handles datasets with large and variable numbers of clusters, without requiring prior knowledge of the cluster count, relying on only one parameter. The high speed and efficiency of HDCluster allow

Network Analysis of Pairwise Relative Tuberculosis Transmission Probabilities in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Identifying transmission events is important in understanding infectious disease dynamics. Such events are typically unobservable, particularly in diseases with long serial intervals such as tuberculosis (TB). We apply network techniques to identify transmission clusters and features shared within clusters. METHODS: We estimate directed pairwise transmission probabilities via an existing iterative algorithm that employs a modified Naïve Bayes classifier to incorporate demographic, clinical, and genetic data and use these probabilities to create a network. We explore noise reductio

CDSKNNXMBD: a novel clustering framework for large-scale single-cell data based on a stable graph structure.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and efficient cell grouping is essential for analyzing single-cell transcriptome sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. However, the existing clustering techniques often struggle to provide timely and accurate cell type groupings when dealing with datasets with large-scale or imbalanced cell types. Therefore, there is a need for improved methods that can handle the increasing size of scRNA-seq datasets while maintaining high accuracy and efficiency. METHODS: We propose CDSKNNXMBD (Community Detection based on a Stable K-Nearest Neighbor Graph Structure), a novel single-cell cluster

Federated k-means based on clusters backbone.

Federated clustering is a distributed clustering algorithm that does not require the transmission of raw data and is widely used. However, it struggles to handle Non-IID data effectively because it is difficult to obtain accurate global consistency measures under Non-Independent and Identically Distributed (Non-IID) conditions. To address this issue, we propose a federated k-means clustering algorithm based on a cluster backbone called FKmeansCB. First, we add Laplace noise to all the local data, and run k-means clustering on the client side to obtain cluster centers, which faithfully represen

Dispersion-to-consolidation: Consolidating dispersed semantics via context-aware clustering for whole slide image analysis.

Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) has become the dominant paradigm for analyzing histopathology whole slide images (WSIs). However, the inherent spatial heterogeneity of WSIs poses a significant challenge to existing MIL methods. This heterogeneity, where morphologically similar tissue patches often exhibit multifocal distributions across the WSI, hinders the ability of current models to effectively capture long-range spatial dependencies and complex inter-tissue semantic associations. To mitigate these limitations, we propose DisCo, a novel Dispersion-to-Consolidation MIL framework that consol

High accuracy breast cancer classification with BIRADS and coclustering.

Breast cancer is one of the most common disease in women. Most of existing breast cancer classification methods include region segmentation, feature extraction and classification phases. It is hard for doctors to understand the conclusion drawn from low level image features. Besides, in cancer hospital more malignant cases than benign cases can be collected, in physical examination center more benign cases can be collected, causing the imbalance problem. To solve above two problems, this study designed a novel breast cancer classification method based on high level Breast Imaging Reporting and

Clustering Hybrid Functional and Vector Data.

Modern biomedical studies increasingly collect hybrid data, consisting of functional observations (e.g., curves or images) and multiple scalar (vector-valued) clinical variables. Integrating these modalities in an unsupervised learning framework can improve patient subgroup identification and interpretation, yet most existing clustering approaches handle only a single data type. We introduce a clustering framework for hybrid data combining multivariate functional and vector outcomes. The method first applies hybrid principal component analysis to capture joint mean structures and modes of vari

Interpretable behavioral clusters of gamblers through unsupervised learning.

Understanding the heterogeneity among highly involved gamblers is critical for the development of effective harm reduction strategies. This study employs unsupervised machine learning to segment a population of high-intensity Electronic Gambling Machine (EGM) users based on behavioral indicators derived from transactional data. Using a combination of Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) for nonlinear dimensionality reduction and Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) for cluster identification, we performed a systematic grid search to optimize inte

Feature Reduction or Sample Reduction? A Stability Analysis of Parkinson's Disease Clustering.

Although clustering is widely used to explore phenotypic heterogeneity in Parkinson's disease (PD), reported subtype solutions often show limited reproducibility. We investigated whether reducing the number of features or samples in a typical clinical PD dataset more strongly affects clustering stability. We used baseline PD data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative. We applied K-means, Gaussian mixture models (GMM), and DBSCAN under systematic feature and sample reduction (40 %, 60 %, 80 %, and 100 %). We assessed cluster stability using the Adjusted Rand Index (ARI) relative t

A novel approach to quantifying mammal locomotor repertoires using scoring and cluster analysis.

Describing behaviour using qualitative categories is a staple of studies on tetrapod functional morphology, ecology and evolution. However, such categorization has several issues, primarily subjectivity and the loss of important behavioural repertoire information. Here, we propose a novel method for quantifying behaviour, using mammal locomotion as a case study to demonstrate its utility and efficacy. Species are scored from 0 to 4 on their proficiency in five locomotor modes (swimming, climbing, digging, running and aerial movement), then Ward's hierarchical clustering is used on the resultin

A Consensus Clustering Approach to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Phenotyping.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) phenotyping is a challenging task due to its heterogeneous nature and low prevalence. In this paper, we introduce a data-driven approach to support the characterization of ALS phenotypes based on clinical data from a battery of examinations. A consensus clustering method is proposed to identify stable clusters across multiple random data sub-samples, with the objective of discovering whether the retrieved patients' groups and related features align with clinical phenotypes and medical knowledge. Results suggest consistent profiles for bulbar onset ALS patien

Towards improved specificity in mental health syndromes: projection-based clustering of depressive phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative attempts to improve syndrome specificity typically produce large heterogenous subgroupings, impacting the validity of treatment and research targets. Assessing barriers to the valid application of existing methods and examining improvements from an interpretable projection-based clustering alternative may improve the precision and reproducibility of our research targets and classification systems. METHODS: This exploratory, cross-sectional, study recruited 2820 participants aged 12-to-25 years, from primary-healthcare services in Australia, between November 2018 and J

Adherence predictor variables in AIDS patients: an empirical study using the data mining-based RFM model.

BACKGROUND: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART) is still the only effective method to stop the disease progression in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. However, poor adherence to the therapy makes it ineffective. In this work, we construct an adherence prediction model of AIDS patients using the classical recency, frequency and monetary value (RFM) model in the data mining-based customer relationship management model to obtain adherence predictor variables. METHODS: We cleaned 257,305 diagnostic data elements of AIDS outpatients in Shanghai from August 2009 to Decembe

Hybrid Fuzzy Clustering Method Based on FCM and Enhanced Logarithmical PSO (ELPSO).

Fuzzy c-means (FCM) is one of the best-known clustering methods to organize the wide variety of datasets automatically and acquire accurate classification, but it has a tendency to fall into local minima. For overcoming these weaknesses, some methods that hybridize PSO and FCM for clustering have been proposed in the literature, and it is demonstrated that these hybrid methods have an improved accuracy over traditional partition clustering approaches, whereas PSO-based clustering methods have poor execution time in comparison to partitional clustering techniques, and the current PSO algorithms
