Characterization and pathogenicity of multidrug-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococci isolates in chickens.

The pathogenic potential of vancomycin and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococci (VMRCoNS) on Egyptian poultry farms has received little attention. Therefore, this study aims to study the prevalence of CoNS in imported poultry flocks and commercial poultry farms, evaluate the presence of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes (sea, seb, sec, sed, see, and mecA), and assess their pathogenicity in broiler chicks. Seven species were identified among 25 isolates, such as 8 S. gallinarum, 5 S. saprophyticus, 5 S. chromogens, 3 S. warneri, 2 S. hominis, 1 S. caprae, and 1 S. epid

Linezolid in the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) is increasingly common and is sometimes treated with off-label use of linezolid. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients with PJI caused by CoNS treated with surgical intervention and orally administrated linezolid during the period 1995-2014 (n = 28). Clinical outcomes and adverse events related to linezolid administration were evaluated. Mean time to follow-up was 4.3 years (range: 0.2-12). Results: Twenty-two of 28 patients were infection-free at follow-up. No CoNS strain was r

[Coagulase-negative staphylococcal osteomyelitis in preterm infants: a proposal for a diagnostic procedure].

Acute osteomyelitis, although a rare complication in neonates, is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Successful treatment to avoid functional sequelae depends on early recognition of infection and rapid initiation of therapy. Although Staphylococcus aureus is the most common causative agent, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CONS), well known for bloodstream infection, can be involved in neonatal osteomyelitis. Risk factors of osteomyelitis include prematurity and invasive procedures, such as long-term central venous catheterization. We report on 3 cases of acute CONS osteomyelitis in pr

Rapid detection of the methicillin-resistance gene, mecA, in coagulase-negative Staphylococci.

Phenotypical methods are routinely used to detect methicillin resistance in Staphylococci. These methods are time-consuming and there are difficulties in detecting all resistant strains carrying the mecA gene. We detected methicillin-resistant Staphylococci in biological samples by PCR amplification of mecA, without the time-consuming step of identifying a bacterial isolate. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococci isolates were also detected by screening on agar supplemented with oxacillin. The biological samples were collected from the hands of 17 healthcare workers at the Department of Paediatri

Endophthalmitis caused by the coagulase-negative staphylococci. 1. Disease spectrum and outcome.

PURPOSE: The coagulase-negative staphylococci are the most common causes of postoperative endophthalmitis. This study investigates the variability in the disease spectrum and visual outcome of coagulase-negative staphylococcal endophthalmitis in a large, single-center series. METHODS: Ninety consecutive cases of coagulase-negative staphylococcal endophthalmitis were investigated retrospectively from two time periods, 1978 to 1982 and 1985 to 1987, separated by a transitional period in cataract surgery technique. Using a detailed protocol, inpatient, outpatient, and microbiologic records were

[Coagulase-negative staphylococci--problem bacteria in the hospital. Identification and resistance status].

131 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) of clinical significance were investigated during the period 1989-1990 in Northern Norway. The staphylococci were isolated from blood cultures (68/131, 51.9 per cent), vascular catheters (6/131), patients with osteomyelitis (13/131), postoperative and other wounds (15/131) and urinary tract infections (29/131). The staphylococci were mostly from hospitalized patients (114/131). Vitek's GPI and Rosco's Staph-zym both gave a primarily correct identification in 95 per cent of the cases. S epidermidis was the predominant species (96/131; 73.3 per cent). M

Correlations between consumption of antibiotics and methicillin resistance in coagulase negative staphylococci.

The correlation between antibiotic consumption, expressed in defined daily doses (DDD), and antibiotic resistance rates was studied, using 976 isolates of coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS) from human pathological material. Data from four hospitals, including 14 participating departments, were analysed for this purpose. Susceptibility tests were performed according to Dutch national standards, except for methicillin, which for the majority of isolates was tested according to adapted NCCLS standards. Resistance to methicillin was most frequent in Staphylococcus epidermidis (29%) and S. haem

Staphylococcal food poisonings in Tokyo, with special reference to the coagulase types of the isolates.

Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from the 391 confirmed cases of staphylococcal food poisonings in Tokyo, in the period 1967-1986, were studied for their coagulase types. Consequently, it was found that all the isolates could be classified into the coagulase types II, III, VI and VII. Namely, the isolates from 54 (13.8%) of 391 outbreaks were typed as type II, 72 (18.4%) as type III, 38 (9.7%) as type VI, and 227 (58.1%) as type VII, respectively. Throughout the investigation, it was found that the outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisonings due to coagulase type VII organisms were remar

Epidemiology and clinical significance of blood cultures positive for coagulase-negative staphylococcus.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci are frequently isolated from blood cultures. As these organisms may occasionally cause serious disease, differentiating bacteremia from contamination is very important but often difficult. Over a 26-month period, of 29,542 blood cultures processed at the University of Michigan Medical Center, 2,875 (9.7%) were positive, and of those, 694 (from 527 patients) grew coagulase-negative staphylococci. Isolates from the 439 patients with only one blood culture positive for coagulase-negative staphylococci and those from the 18 patients with two positive cultures 10 da

Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS): An Emerging Threat, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Health Concern.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have evolved from a harmless commensal group to an alarming threat to patient, environmental, and population health due to their challenging treatment and their impact on health outcomes. The widespread presence of CoNS in these environments poses a public health concern due to various virulence factors, biofilm formation, and toxin production, which contribute to pathogenicity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Major clinical manifestations include device-related infections, bloodstream infections, and neonatal sepsis. Nonclinical reservoirs, such as s

Multidrug Resistance and mupA-Mediated Mupirocin Resistance in Clinical Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNSs) are major opportunistic pathogens in healthcare settings, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients and those with indwelling medical devices. Their growing antimicrobial resistance and ability to form biofilms present significant therapeutic challenges. This study analyzed 148 clinical CoNS isolates to determine species distribution, antimicrobial resistance, resistance genes, and biofilm production. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most prevalent species (49.3%), followed by Staphylococcus hominis (27.0%) and Staphylococcus capitis (6.8%). P

The emerging threat of multidrug-resistant mecA gene-positive coagulase-negative Staphylococci.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), previously classified as normal bacterial flora, have recently been associated with serious infectious diseases. The clinical isolation rate of these bacteria has increased in parallel with a rising prevalence of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence and species diversity of CoNS and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred samples were collected from patients attending outpatient clinics. Bacterial genus, species, and antimicrobial susceptibility pat

Glycopeptide Heteroresistance Among Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

We identified a high prevalence of glycopeptide heteroresistance amongst coagulase-negative staphylococci (41.4%, 95% confidence interval 30.7-52.9; meta-analysis including n = 1432 isolates). Heteroresistance was associated with methicillin resistance, did not require glycopeptide exposure, and may be more prevalent among isolates from invasive infections. Heteroresistance may represent an under-appreciated reason for treatment failure of CoNS infections.

When Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Mislead: Transient Metabolic Acidosis in a Healthy Toddler.

Staphylococcus hominis (S. hominis), a coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS), is commonly encountered in blood cultures and presents diagnostic challenges in both pediatric and adult infections. Its clinical significance remains uncertain, especially in previously healthy children without evident immunodeficiency or indwelling devices. Metabolic acidosis associated with S. hominis bacteremia is rarely reported, further complicating clinical interpretation. We report a previously healthy two-year-old boy presenting with high-grade fever, cough, mild respiratory distress, and metabolic acidos

Cefazolin susceptibility of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) causing late-onset neonatal bacteraemia.

BACKGROUND: CoNS bacteraemia causes significant neonatal morbidity. Previous work has suggested that β-lactam antibiotics vary in their binding affinity to PBP2a (produced by the mecA gene) present in most CoNS. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated cefazolin MICs for CoNS isolated in an Australian neonatal ICU (NICU) and correlated them with isolate genotype and phenotype. METHODS: Significant blood isolates from 2009 to 2017 were speciated and underwent broth microdilution testing for cefazolin, cefoxitin, oxacillin and flucloxacillin. Correlation with mecA presence and PBP2a expression was evaluated.
