Study on Multipoint and Zoning Coordinated Prevention of Gas and Coal Spontaneous Combustion in Highly Gassy and Spontaneous Combustion-Prone Coal Seam.

Coal spontaneous combustion in gob often induces gas explosion accidents. To solve the frequent occurrence of gas and coal spontaneous combustion (GCSC) symbiotic disaster of highly gassy and spontaneous combustion-prone short-distance coal seams, the stope space of a complex working face formed by the old gob above and the coal seam mined below in Hengda Mine is divided into three zones, a completely connected zone, a partially connected zone, and an unconnected zone, according to the connectivity degree of fractures. A numerical model is established to study the relationship between gas drai

Investigation on the influence of the macropores in coal on CBM recovery.

As an important component of coal structure, the macropores have a great influence on CBM recovery. In this paper, the macropores characteristic of two coal samples collected from 3# coal seam in the south of Qinshui Basin, China was analyzed on the basic of mercury intrusion porosimetry, and a fully coupled triple-porosity/double permeability mathematical model for CBM recovery was established according to the physical structure of coal and the non-Darcy flow of methane in macropores. Then, the various factors affecting the macropores permeability were discussed and the influence of size dist

Coal mining and lung disease in the 21st century.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the impact of coal mining and resurgence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) in 21st century and effect of ambient air pollution on lung function. RECENT FINDINGS: At the beginning of 21st century, statistics by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health showed a steep rise in pneumoconiosis. This was followed by numerous epidemiologic and pathologic studies that confirmed increasing CWP prevalence as well as disease in younger miners and those with a shorter mining tenure. Recent studies have demonstrated that poor dust control in mines, a relative s

Ocular findings in coal miners diagnosed with pneumoconiosis.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed at evaluating ocular findings and structural changes in coal mine workers who were chronically exposed to coal mine dust and diagnosed with pneumoconiosis. METHODS: Ocular findings of 161 eyes of 81 patients diagnosed with pneumoconiosis who had previously worked or are currently working in coal mines were analyzed. Forty-six coal mine workers and sex matched healthy people (n = 20) participated in the study. Workers who had early changes of pneumoconiosis were included in Group 1 (n = 17), workers diagnosed with pneumoconiosis were included in Group 2 (n = 29), and

Lung transplantation in patients with coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

Patients with coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) can develop chronic respiratory failure and require lung transplantation. A retrospective review was performed of the 712 referrals and 143 patients undergoing unilateral or bilateral lung transplantation at the University of Kentucky Medical Center between January 1999 and July 2009. Twenty-one of the 712 referrals (3%) had a diagnosis of CWP with eight patients eventually undergoing lung transplant (six single, two bilateral). The mean age of the cohort was 53 ± 5 (mean ± SD) yr (range 45-59). There was no increased risk of perioperative or po

Identification of significant factors in reburning with coal volatiles.

In laboratory-scale flow reactor studies, fuel staging using coal volatiles as a reburning fuel has given superior NOx reduction performance compared to reburning using natural gas. This superior performance of coal volatiles may be caused by an increased yield of hydrocarbon radicals and free nitrogen species in the reburning zone. In this study, kinetic models were used to predict the composition of coal volatiles used in reburning. The reburning process was then examined using a set of designed experiments to examine the components of the coal volatiles and their effects on NOx reduction. W

Effects of coal dust contiguity on xerophthalmia development.

PURPOSES: To study the occurrence of ocular surface diseases on coal miners working under wells and to investigate the relation between xerophthalmia occurrence and coal dust contiguity. METHODS: To observe the influence of coal dust to ocular surface by using Schirmer to detect lacrimal gland secreting function, and breakup time of tear film (BUT) to evaluate the stability of lacrimal film and the quantity of lysozyme in lacrimal fluid. RESULTS: These values were lower for underground coal miners than other workers not contacting coal dust, and showed negative correlation to period of their

Presence and HRCT quantification of bronchiectasis in coal workers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of bronchiectasis in coal workers with or without coal worker pneumoconiosis (CWP) and to assess the extent of bronchiectasis, severity of bronchial wall dilatation and thickening by high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective study consisted of HRCT archieves of 93 coal workers. The coal workers with previous diagnosis of COPD (six), asthma (one) and tuberculosis (three) were excluded. Five coal workers with progressive massive fibrosis were not included into the study. The resulting pati

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the lung in a coal miner with pneumoconiosis.

Inflammatory pseudotumors of the lung are uncommon and etiologically diverse lesions that often present as solitary masses in the lung. It may be difficult to distinguish these lesions from more commonly encountered lung neoplasms. Inflammatory pseudotumors can also occur in other organs, but the lung is most commonly involved. We describe a 63-year-old male coal miner with a 40-year history of dust exposure, who had a large right middle lobe mass on chest roentgenograms, with slow growth over the 7 years prior to admission. Repeated transthoracic echo-guided biopsies of the mass were indicati

Radiographic and pathologic correlation of coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

The relationships between chest radiographs (CXR) and corresponding pathology were investigated in 430 autopsied coal miners from West Virginia. Whole-lung sections were reviewed and graded on four-point severity scales for the following lesions of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP): macules, micro- and macronodules (small and large fibrotic nodules), and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Antemortem CXR were classified by three B readers using the 1971 International Labor Office (ILO) U/C classification (6). On pathologic examination, 96% of miners had macules, 70% micronodules, 45% macronod

Mortality among coal miners with pneumoconiosis in Poland.

A mortality cohort study was carried out on 7,065 coal miners with pneumoconiosis first diagnosed during the years of 1970-85. The cohort was selected from among subjects entered into the National Register of Occupational Diseases and followed up through to the end of 1991. The general male population of Poland was considered as a reference group. The PYRS-3 programme was used to identify, by means of standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), total and selected cause-specific mortality. An analysis revealed significantly elevated total mortality (SMR = 105; 95% confidence interval (CI): 100-110) i

[Role of medicinal coal in primary management of poisoning].

Primary detoxication by ipecac-induced emesis or gastric lavage is incomplete. In mild to moderate childhood poisoning administration of activated charcoal alone without gastric emptying is often more effective, because it binds toxins promptly. In-vitro and in-vivo studies of many substances have shown good adsorption to activated charcoal (e.g. digitalis, beta-blocking agents, phenobarbitone, carbamazepine, theophylline). If in-vitro adsorption is moderate to poor, administration of activated charcoal might nevertheless prove clinically valuable by altering the severity of symptoms such as h

[Occupational morbidity among coal miners in the RSFSR].

Analysis of occupational morbidity for 1982-1989 in coal extraction industry workers in the Russian Federation showed its high-level detection in coal-miners. Revealed was a decrease in dust-induced occupational diseases and a greater detection of vibration disease cases, which accounted for 50% in the occupational diseases' structure. In miners, vibration disease cases occurred equally often in coal mine face-workers and driving team workers. The face-workers also exhibited dust-induced diseases and locomotor system disorders. In open pit mines and coal-refining plants, occupational pathology

A teratological assessment of coal liquefaction products in the rat.

Teratogenicity of coal liquefaction products (CLP) was assessed in the pregnant rat. Three product streams of CLP (medium, hydrotreated medium and heavy fractions) were each administered dermally on Sprague-Dawley rats at doses of 125, 250 or 500 mg kg-1 day-1 from Day 6 through to Day 15 of gestation. Depressed maternal weight gain and reduced number of fetuses resulting from an increased resorption rate, decreased fetal weight and retarded ossification were observed in the group treated with the heavy fraction at a dose of 500 mg kg-1 day-1. The heavy fraction at 500 mg kg-1 day-1 also cause

Morbidity of British coal miners in 1961-62.

Liddell, F. D. K. (1973). Brit. J. industr. Med.,30, 1-14. Morbidity of British coal miners in 1961-62. The British coal mining population in 1961 is described, in terms of the 29 084men covered in a 5% sample census, by age, type of employment, coalfield, size of community, degree of mechanization, and other factors. Over a quarter of the men were in jobs not considered specific to coalmining, although nearly half of such men were working underground. The Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance provided records of over 34 000 spells of incapacity due to sickness for these men. Miners were
