The potential oxidation characteristics of CaCr2O4 during coal combustion with solid waste in a fluidized bed boiler: A thermogravimetric analysis.

CaCr2O4 (Cr (III)), mainly generated through the decomposition of CaCrO4 (Cr (VI)), is a significant intermediate for toxic Cr (VI) formation during solid fuel combustion. In this study, the formation, oxidation and sulfation kinetics of CaCr2O4 were analyzed to forecast the potential of CaCr2O4 oxidation during co-firing of coal and solid waste in a circulating fluidized bed boiler. The results indicated that the formation and oxidation of CaCr2O4 were fitted to a single step nucleation and growth model while CaCr2O4 sulfation was fitted to a shrinking core model. CaCr2O4 formation through Ca

An alternative to additional SO3 injection for fly ash conditioning.

Small concentrations, approximately 2-10 parts per million (ppm), of injected sulfur trioxide (SO3) have improved particulate collection efficiencies of electrostatic precipitators burning lower-sulfur coal. However, the addition of extra SO3 not only incurs costs but also presents negative environmental effects. This work explored a method that could be applied to existing coal-fired power plants to convert the sulfur dioxide (SO2) already present in the flue gas to sufficient levels of SO3 for fly ash conditioning as an alternative to adding SO3 by burning elemental sulfur. During this resea

Natural weathering in dry disposed ash dump: Insight from chemical, mineralogical and geochemical analysis of fresh and unsaturated drilled cores.

Some existing alternative applications of coal fly ash such as cement manufacturing; road construction; landfill; and concrete and waste stabilisation use fresh ash directly collected from coal-fired power generating stations. Thus, if the rate of usage continues, the demand for fresh ash for various applications will exceed supply and use of weathered dry disposed ash will become necessary alternative. As a result it's imperative to understand the chemistry and pH behaviour of some metals inherent in dry disposed fly ash. The bulk chemical composition as determined by XRF analysis showed that

Use of synchrotron XANES and Cr-doped coal to further confirm the vaporization of organically bound Cr and the formation of chromium(VI) during coal oxy-fuel combustion.

Through the use of synchrotron XANES and Cr-doped brown coal, extensive efforts have been made to clarify the volatility of organically bound Cr during oxy-fuel combustion and the mode of occurrence and leachability of Cr in resulting fly ashes. As the continuation of our previous study using raw coal, the Cr-doped coal has been tested in this study to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for Cr K-edge XANES spectra, and hence the accuracy for Cr(VI) quantification. As has been confirmed, the abundant CO(2) as a balance gas for oxy-firing has the potential to inhibit the decomposition of organica

Life cycle analysis, leaching, technical and mechanical properties of wallboards composed of flue gas desulfurization gypsum and fly ash with carbon fibers.

This research focused on analyzing the physical, mechanical, and leaching properties of wallboards manufactured with gypsum (79-100% wt) derived from flue gas desulfurization (FGD-G) along with fly ash (0 and 20% wt). Two different heating temperatures of FGD-G, 120 °C and 130 °C, were used as well as two water-to-solid weight ratios, 0.4 and 0.6. Although fly ash is classified as hazardous waste (due to Se) and gypsum is considered inert waste, a leaching stabilization process was observed in a matrix consisting of 20% wt of fly ash and 80% wt of gypsum. However, the addition of fly ash, high

Synthesis of zeolite NaX based on fly ash: Mechanism of metal impurity retention and utilisation to promote CO2 capture efficiency.

The steel industry urgently requires cost-effective and efficient adsorbents for carbon capture from blast furnace gas. This study explored the use of fly ash to synthesize zeolite NaX (ZZ-NaX) through an impurity retention strategy, with the aim of enhancing CO2 adsorption and selectivity. The results indicate that major metal impurities (Fe, Ca, and Ti) successfully integrate into the counter cation sites of zeolite NaX, with Fe3+ and Ti4+ preferentially occupying the I/I' and III/III' positions. Their high charge density significantly strengthens the electrostatic field within the pores. Ca

Combined stabilization of Cd and Pb in MSWI fly ash by NaH2PO4 and water-soluble thiourea formaldehyde (WTF) resin enabling co-sintering for ceramsite production.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) poses significant environmental risks due to high chlorine content and leachable heavy metals. This study presents an integrated approach combining water washing dechlorination, chemical stabilization, and co-sintering to convert MSWI-FA into lightweight ceramsites. Optimal washing conditions (liquid-to-solid ratio of 10 mL/g, 30 min) reduced the chlorine content from 7.27% to 1.51%, meeting the feed standard for high-temperature sintering. A composite reagent comprising NaH2PO4 and water-soluble thiourea-formaldehyde (WTF) resin at a 1:1 ra

Study on the mechanisms of heavy metal immobilization and migration in the plasma co-melting process of iron-rich hazardous waste fly ash and bottom ash.

Hazardous fly ash (HFA) contains large amounts of toxic heavy metals and poses significant potential risks to the environment. In this study, HFA was co-melted with hazardous bottom ash (HBA) and waste glass (WG) in a plasma system to investigate its vitrification behavior, heavy metal migration, and solidification mechanisms. The results indicate high vitrification efficiency (99.5 %) and ash solidification rate (97.1 %). The original multi-phase crystalline structure transformed into a structure dominated by an amorphous silicate network following plasma melting and rapid cooling. The surfac

Sustainable valorization of MSWI residues: Mechanochemical immobilization of heavy metals and use as supplementary cementitious materials.

Potentially toxic elements (heavy metals and chlorinated organic compounds) and metallic aluminum (Al0) in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) residues pose a critical barrier to their utilization as cementitious materials. In this study, the mechanochemical treatment of all types of MSWI residues - individually, together, or with CaO was carried out to immobilize heavy metals, mitigate highly toxic organic compounds, and enhance cementitious properties. The leaching rate of Sb from the original bottom ash (BA), as well as Cr, and Pb from the air pollution control (APC) residues, was red

Treatment of fine and medium fractions of MSWI bottom ash for use in concrete: A German case study.

Incineration bottom ash (IBA) is the main solid residue from municipal solid waste incineration. IBA mostly contains minerals that can be used as secondary construction materials in unbound applications as well as concrete after appropriate treatment. Major challenges, in particular for its utilization in concrete, are residual metal contents, soluble salts, as well as the high porosity of the material. The goal of this study was to investigate the processing of the fine (0-2 mm) and medium (2-8 mm) IBA fractions with respect to their utilization as a partial substitute for binder and aggregat

Recognition of screening out hierarchical toxic contaminants tuned by quantified pseudo-components from complex engineering co-combustion.

Co-combustion of industrial and municipal solid wastes has emerged as the most promising disposal technology, yet its effect on unknown contaminants generation remains rarely revealed due to waste complexity. Hence, six batches of large-scale engineering experiments were designed in an incinerator of 650 t/d, which overcame the inauthenticity and deviation of laboratory tests. 953-1772 non-targeted compounds were screened in fly ash. Targeting the impact of co-combustion, a pseudo-component matrix model was innovatively integrated to quantitatively extract nine components from complex wastes g

A new method for municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) fly ash inertization, based on colloidal silica.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) is a straightforward way to manage waste, however the disposal of process byproducts, mainly bottom and fly ash, is still a problem, because of their hazardous contents. Fly ash is a byproduct of many other processes that involve combustion to produce energy. In this paper we present and discuss a new method for MSWI fly ash inertization, mainly based on the use of colloidal silica as a stabilization agent for metals. In the patented procedure, fly ash of different provenance can be used to produce an inert and non-hazardous material, that can be reuse

Synergistic mechanism between mineralization and capillary trapping in MSWIFA-based carbon sequestration material.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA), a waste product of urban operations, is threatening the sustainable development of cities, yet its significant self-foaming potential for CO2 sequestration remains largely unexplored. MSWIFA contributes to enhancing the porosity and Ca2+ content of backfill material, thereby improving the storage capacity. To elucidate the coupled mechanisms of CO2 mineralization and capillary trapping within backfill systems, this study investigates the effects of in-situ goaf environmental conditions on the mineralization process, alongside the hydrodynami

Towards circular economy: Sustainable valorization of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash for recovery of high-purity chlorides and calcium, and separation of heavy metals.

Incineration is an effective method for handling the increasing volume of municipal solid waste, but the resulting fly ash presents a significant problem that needs to be addressed. Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) contains toxic and hazardous substances, including heavy metals, dioxins, and chlorides, and is classified as hazardous waste. This paper analyzes the current situation of MSWI FA and summarizes the main treatment methods, including solidification/stabilization, thermal treatment, and chemical separation/resource recovery. The review critically evaluates research

Blending bauxite residues with multiple byproducts improves capping materials for tailings storage facilities.

Amelioration and management of large volumes of tailings resulting from alumina refining is a major challenge owing to the high alkalinity and salinity of residues. Blended byproduct caps are a potential new and more cost-effective approach to tailings management, where tailings are blended with other local byproducts in order to reduce pH, salinity and toxic elements. Here, alkaline bauxite residue was blended with four byproducts (waste acid, sewage water, fly ash and eucalypt mulch) to create a range of potential capping materials. We leached and weathered materials in the glasshouse with d

Study on application and environmental effect of phosphogypsum-fly ash-red mud composite cemented paste backfill.

Phosphogypsum (PG) cementitious paste backfill (CPB) was prepared by using PG and fly ash (FA) as the main raw materials, red mud (RM) as the alkaline activator, Portland cement (OPC) as the binder, and silica fume (SF) as the additive, and its properties were investigated to achieve the objective of "treating harm with waste." The results showed that the addition of OPC facilitated the flowability of the slurry, while the addition of RM and SF had the opposite effect. The slurry presented ideal flowability when the water/binder ratio was 0.2 and the superplasticizer (SP) content was 0.7%. The

Mercury adsorption characteristics of HBr-modified fly ash in an entrained-flow reactor.

In this study, the mercury adsorption characteristics of HBr-modified fly ash in an entrained-flow reactor were investigated through thermal decomposition methods. The results show that the mercury adsorption performance of the HBr-modified fly ash was enhanced significantly. The mercury species adsorbed by unmodified fly ash were HgCl2, HgS and HgO. The mercury adsorbed by HBr-modified fly ash, in the entrained-flow reactor, existed in two forms, HgBr2 and HgO, and the HBr was the dominant factor promoting oxidation of elemental mercury in the entrained-flow reactor. In the current study, the
