Isolated glycoprotein STK11 from the nutshell of Cocos nucifera L. modulated macrophage polarization to prevent the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli growth in J774A.1 macrophage.

This study examines the importance of host-directed therapy against tuberculosis by targeting macrophage polarization with Cocos nucifera L. nutshell-derived STK11. RT-PCR results revealed that M2 markers (Arg1, YM-1, FIZZ1, CD206, IL-4, IL-10) were upregulated, while M1 markers (CD40, CD68, IL-6, IL-12) were downregulated in H37Ra-infected J774A.1 macrophages. Isolated glycoprotein STK11 significantly (p < 0.05) restricted the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacilli in the Middlebrook 7H9 medium and inhibited H37Ra bacilli growth within macrophages. STK11 (10 μg/ml) was also found to dec

Dehydrotrametenolic acid methyl ester, a triterpenoid of Poria cocos, alleviates non-alcoholic steatohepatitis by suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation via targeting Caspase-1 in mice.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has emerged as a prevalent chronic liver disease with a huge unmet clinical need. A few studies have reported the beneficial effects of Poria cocos Wolf (P. cocos) extract on NASH mice, but the active components were still unknown. In this study we investigated the therapeutic effects of dehydrotrametenolic acid methyl ester (ZQS5029-1), a lanosterol-7,9(11)-diene triterpenes in P. cocos, in a high-fat diet plus CCl4 induced murine NASH model and a GAN diet induced ob/ob murine NASH model. The NASH mice were treated with ZQS5029-1 (75 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.g.) for

Poria cocos polysaccharides alleviate obesity-related adipose tissue insulin resistance via gut microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids activation of FGF21/PI3K/AKT signaling.

Obesity is a chronic condition that increases the risk of metabolic disorders, with intestinal dysbiosis and adipose tissue insulin resistance (Adipose-IR) playing key roles in its pathogenesis. Poria cocos polysaccharides (PCP), derived from traditional Chinese medicine, have shown potential in improving glucose metabolism and modulating gut microbiota. However, whether PCP can alleviate obesity-induced Adipose-IR and its dependence on gut microbiota remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of PCP on Adipose-IR in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. PCP supplementation reduced

Beneficial Effect of Gastrodia elata Blume and Poria cocos Wolf Administration on Acute UVB Irradiation by Alleviating Inflammation through Promoting the Gut-Skin Axis.

Bioactive compounds in some herbs can, directly and indirectly, protect against photoaging. We evaluated the effects of Gastrodia elata Blume (GE) and Poria cocos Wolf (PC) water extracts on ultraviolet (UV) B-induced skin lesions by acute UVB exposure in ICR mice and explored their mechanism of action. After removing the hair on the back of the mice, UVB (280-310 nm) was exposed to the back for 30 min to induce skin damage. Four UVB exposure groups were divided into the following according to the local application (1,3-butanediol extract) on the dorsal skin and oral intake (0.3 g water extrac

With the interruption of larva treatments done by OCP as part of onchocerciasis control in West Africa, Simulium came back in abundance in forest regions and savannah fertile valleys. In addition to the severe discomfort, nuisance by Simulium is in certain cases incompatible with land use. Since ground treatment of larval breading sites using insecticides is not always possible or efficient, it is therefore a necessity to develop other methods among which individual protection against Simulium bites.
