Tryptophan breakdown and cognition in bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: It has been demonstrated that bipolar disorder (BD) is often accompanied by cognitive deficits across all subdomains including verbal memory, attention and executive functioning. Cognitive deficits are observed both during episodes of mania or depression, as well as during the euthymic phase. It has been proposed that chronic immune-mediated inflammation in the central nervous system results in alterations in neural structures that subserve cognitive function. Kynurenine is an intermediate in the inflammatory cascade and can be peripherally measured to proxy inflammatory activity

Vitamin B-12 and Cognition in Children.

Vitamin B-12 is essential for brain development, neural myelination, and cognitive function. Inadequate vitamin B-12 status during pregnancy and early childhood has been associated with adverse child health outcomes, including impaired cognitive development. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated. This review was conducted to examine the evidence that links vitamin B-12 and cognition in children. The search strategy resulted in 17 studies: 3 cross-sectional, 1 case-control, and 12 cohort studies, and 1 randomized trial. Cognitive processes assessed included attention, memo

Gait, posture and cognition in Parkinson's disease.

Gait disorders and postural instability are the leading causes of falls and disability in Parkinson's disease (PD). Cognition plays an important role in postural control and may interfere with gait and posture assessment and treatment. It is important to recognize gait, posture and balance dysfunctions by choosing proper assessment tools for PD. Patients at higher risk of falling must be referred for rehabilitation as early as possible, because antiparkinsonian drugs and surgery do not improve gait and posture in PD.

Dalfampridine effects on cognition, fatigue, and dexterity.

OBJECTIVES: Dalfampridine exerts beneficial effects on walking ability in a subgroup of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). These patients are termed "responders". Here, we investigated whether the responder status with respect to mobility measures would determine whether dalfampridine treatment exerts a beneficial effect on other MS symptoms. We therefore assessed walking ability, upper limb function, cognition, fatigue, visual evoked potentials (VEPs), depression, and quality of life in patients before and after dalfampridine treatment. METHODS: Patients with MS and impaired mobility wer

Predictors of cognition in first episode psychosis.

PURPOSE: Cognitive deficits are common in the first episode of psychosis (FEP) and may begin much earlier. While some evidence suggests that the decline in cognition occurs over the untreated symptomatic period, including the prodromal phase, others point to these deficits being present even earlier. We aimed to investigate the differential effect of untreated symptomatic and pre-morbid phases on cognition in a large sample of FEP. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty eight FEP patients, admitted into a specialized early intervention service, were administered neuro-cognitive tests. The Circumstanc

A review of cognition in Huntington's disease.

With the prospect of potential treatments for Huntington's disease (HD), non-invasive markers of disease progression are needed. Cognitive impairment has long been recognised as one of the core symptoms of HD. The first aim of this review is to provide insight into the onset and nature of cognitive loss in the progressing stages of HD. The second aim is to provide an overview of the cognitive functions that have been examined in an attempt to identify those areas that have the most potential to yield a cognitive biomarker. Literature, consisting of 110 studies, since the implementation of gene

Mechanisms for widespread hippocampal involvement in cognition.

The quintessential memory system in the human brain--the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe--is often treated as a module for the formation of conscious, or declarative, memories. However, growing evidence suggests that the hippocampus plays a broader role in memory and cognition and that theories organizing memory into strictly dedicated systems may need to be updated. We first consider the historical evidence for the specialized role of the hippocampus in declarative memory. Then, we describe the serendipitous encounter that motivated the special section in this issue, based on

Social cognition and negative symptoms in psychosis.

This study examined the relationship between negative symptoms and social cognition in individuals with psychosis. Although negative symptoms were associated with social cognition, stereotyped thinking, which is cognitive in nature, emerged as the most significant predictor, suggesting that cognition rather than symptoms may have a greater impact on social cognition.

Behaviour, attention and cognition in severe dyslexia.

Information about coexisting problems in dyslexia may be vital for diagnostic and remedial procedures. There are few studies in this area, and to our knowledge none for the students in focus in this study. They all have phonological deficits and severely impaired reading abilities, in spite of prolonged educational remediation. The aim was to assess if these students have more behavioural/emotional problems than normal reading students. A clinical sample of 70 students, 59 males and 11 females, were compared to a normal reading control group. The groups were pair-wise matched on age, gender, c

The influence of sad mood on cognition.

Neuroimaging has identified an overlapping network of brain regions whose activity is modulated by mood and cognition. Studies of depressed individuals have shown changes in perception, attention, memory, and executive functions. This suggests that mood has a pervasive effect on cognition. Direct evidence of the effect of sad mood on cognition is surprisingly limited, however. Published studies have generally addressed a single cognitive ability per study because the fleeting nature of laboratory-induced mood precludes extended testing, and robust findings are limited to mood effects on memory

Thalamic atrophy and cognition in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have indicated that brain atrophy is more closely associated with cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS) than are conventional MRI lesion measures. Enlargement of the third ventricle shows a particularly strong correlation with cognitive impairment, suggesting clinical relevance of damage to surrounding structures, such as the thalamus. Previous imaging and pathology studies have demonstrated thalamic involvement in MS. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that thalamic volume is lower in MS than in normal subjects, and that thalamic atrophy in MS correla

The effect of vitamin B6 on cognition.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient status can affect cognitive function at all ages. Vitamin deficiencies could influence memory function and might contribute to age-associated cognitive impairment and dementia. Vitamin B6, comprising three chemically distinct compounds pyridoxal, pyridoxamine, and pyridoxine, is involved in the regulation of mental function and mood. Vitamin B6 is also an essential homocysteine re-methylation cofactor, and deficiency is associated with increase in blood homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease and may also have directly toxic effe

Pyridoxine-dependent seizures and cognition in adulthood.

A case report of neonatal onset pyridoxine-dependent seizures in a male patient with early diagnosis and treatment is presented. The patient's epilepsy was recognized and treated with pyridoxine (vitamin B6) within 8 hours of birth. Treatment has been nearly continuous since that time. This paper reports the results of a full neuropsychological evaluation at age 37 years and MRI completed at age 31 years. Consistent with other case reports in the literature, there was a significant Performance IQ (PIQ) advantage with decreased Verbal IQ (VIQ) and expressive language skills (Full-Scale IQ 71, V

Reversible impairment in cognition and midbrain hematoma.

A 78-year-old man presented with a 2-week history of cognitive decline. Computed tomography (CT) showed obstructive hydrocephalus due to a small midbrain hematoma. He regained premorbid neurological status after ventriculostomy. Spontaneous midbrain hemorrhage is a rare cause of cognitive decline that can be diagnosed by CT and treated by shunting.

Cognition and technology in health education research.

There is an explicit relationship between knowledge generation, transmission (dissemination and diffusion), knowledge acquisition, and utilization. In order to disseminate and diffuse information for health promotion and disease prevention, there is an assumption that we just need to change the behaviours of people. This paper challenges this notion and suggests that the thinking behind the behaviours (cognition) also needs to be addressed for successful acquisition and utilization of information. Studies focusing on cognition or thought processes and how sociocultural factors influence or int

Problems in the search for cognition enhancers.

Drugs which enhance cognition may benefit the two largest groups of psychiatric patients who have been bypassed during the psychopharmacological revolution of the past 35 years: those with development mental disabilities and those with brains ravaged by senile dementias. But who among us would not benefit from such a drug, if indeed it could enhance normal performance? Establishing suitable animal models for developing such drugs has been a major problem. Lesioning experiments dictate the answers as well as the questions, delimiting the type of drug to remedy the defect. Other lesions which ar

Neuromodulation and cognition in late-life depression.

Late-life depression (LLD) is associated with cognitive decline and increased risk of dementia. Emerging evidence indicates that impaired cortical synaptic plasticity (due to multiple causes including genetic, developmental, neurodegenerative, vascular conditions, chronic stress, and chronic inflammation) may drive this vulnerability. We focus on how disruptions in prefrontal cortex plasticity related to depression contribute to dementia risk and review plasticity-inducing non-surgical neuromodulations. These neuromodulations include electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial mag

Motion, emotion and cognition: The melancholia conundrum.

BackgroundThe status of melancholia remains controversial. Debate has focused on whether it represents a categorically distinct disorder (binary model) or a severe expression within a unitary construct of major depressive disorder. Its defining core has also been disputed, with competing emphasis on affective symptoms, cognitive distortions, or psychomotor disturbance. Proponents of distinctiveness, notably Gordon Parker, have argued that psychomotor disturbance is central to the syndrome.ObjectiveTo critically examine historical and contemporary evidence regarding melancholia's diagnostic sta

Moving beyond discrete categories in motor cognition.

Theories on human action control assume the human mind copes with the computational challenge of selecting and performing goal-directed movements by recycling previous action plans. Feature binding assists this recycling by integrating stimulus and response features into episodic representations. Perhaps surprisingly, however, previous evidence for binding and retrieval is confined to categorical perceptual and motor features that define coarse-grained decisions. Here we show that such episodic representations can also incorporate continuous, metric information. These conclusions emerge from t
