Music as a form of art: Current findings and challenges of music neuroaesthetics research.

In recent decades, empirical research on music, often grouped under the label of cognitive neuroscience of music, has approached music primarily as a biological, cognitive faculty, focusing on audiomotor predictive and reward mechanisms. More recently, the neuroaesthetics of music has expanded this focus to musical experience as a situated encounter with music as a performing art. From this viewpoint, three complementary accounts of musical experience can be distinguished: an audiomotor-reward account, closely linked to cognitive neuroscience and centered on prediction, reward and auditory-str

Written pain neuroscience education in fibromyalgia: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

Mounting evidence supports the use of face-to-face pain neuroscience education for the treatment of chronic pain patients. This study aimed at examining whether written education about pain neuroscience improves illness perceptions, catastrophizing, and health status in patients with fibromyalgia. A double-blind, multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial with 6-month follow-up was conducted. Patients with FM (n = 114) that consented to participate were randomly allocated to receive either written pain neuroscience education or written relaxation training. Written pain neuroscience educa

Neurobiological substrates of social cognition impairment in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: gathering insights from seven structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies.

Social cognitive neuroscience is beginning to unravel a neuroanatomy of social cognition, networks of brain regions especially involved in social cognition and social functioning. It is widely acknowledged that social functioning and social cognition are impaired in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although an impressive amount of neuroscientific research has been conducted in ADHD, little effort has been made to link those deficits in social cognition and functioning to the well-known brain abnormalities detected in structural and functional neuroimaging studies. We review sev

Bridging metabolic-cognitive modelling: from synaptic cost to functional brain organisation.

Haueis and Colaço argue that metabolism is a generative principle for cognitive modelling. We extend this by bridging the "scaling gap" through functional PET (fPET) and network neuroscience. By measuring glucodynamics and the metabolic network of the brain, we can model how glucose metabolism enables network efficiency, temporal flexibility, information transfer, and ultimately the cognitive capacity of the human brain.

Brain mechanisms of Change in Addictions Treatment: Models, Methods, and Emerging Findings.

Increased understanding of "how" and "for whom" treatment works at the level of the brain has potential to transform addictions treatment through the development of innovative neuroscience-informed interventions. The 2015 Science of Change meeting bridged the fields of neuroscience and psychotherapy research to identify brain mechanisms of behavior change that are "common" across therapies, and "specific" to distinct behavioral interventions. Conceptual models of brain mechanisms underlying effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness interventions, and Motivational Interviewing were d

Why metabolism remains implicit in cognitive models.

Explicitly modeling metabolic constraints remains rare in cognitive neuroscience due to methodological, empirical, and conceptual challenges. Although metabolic limits already shape the biological data that many models are fitted to, direct measurements of energetic costs remain scarce and difficult to relate to model variables. We argue that recent experimental and computational advances may soon enable more explicit integration of metabolism into cognitive models.

Prostheses as extensions of the body: Progress and challenges.

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in the incorporation of artificial limbs. This research promises to provide individuals with sensorimotor disorders such as amputations with prostheses which feel like their own body part. While neuroscience made a leap towards uncovering the basic neurocognitive mechanisms of bodily self-consciousness, the development of incorporated prosthetic limbs still faces substantial challenges in basic neuroscience and in clinical reality. Here we critically examine recent findings on prosthesis incorporation to aid patient rehabilitation in the context of ad

Leveraging brain science for impactful advocacy and policymaking: The synergistic partnership between developmental cognitive neuroscientists and a parent-led grassroots movement to drive dyslexia prevention policy and legislation.

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic, vocational, and economic success and has been closely linked to health outcomes. Unfortunately, in the United States, a concerning 63% of fourth-grade children are reading below grade level, with approximately 7%-10% exhibiting a disability in word reading, developmental dyslexia. Research in developmental cognitive neuroscience indicates that individuals with dyslexia show functional and structural brain alterations in regions processing reading and reading-related information, with some of these differences emerging as early as preschool and even

Interoceptive technologies for psychiatric interventions: From diagnosis to clinical applications.

Interoception-the perception of internal bodily signals-has emerged as an area of interest due to its implications in emotion and the prevalence of dysfunctional interoceptive processes across psychopathological conditions. Despite the importance of interoception in cognitive neuroscience and psychiatry, its experimental manipulation remains technically challenging. This is due to the invasive nature of existing methods, the limitation of self-report and unimodal measures of interoception, and the absence of standardized approaches across disparate fields. This article integrates diverse resea

Transient Ischemic Attack and Cognitive Impairment: A Review.

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a neurologic deficit resulting from focal ischemia in the brain, spinal cord, or retina. Historically, the definition included symptom resolution within 24 hours. However, recent studies investigating cognition after TIA suggest that deficits in executive function persist at 7 days post-TIA, although few studies have examined these effects long term. Recent advances in neuroimaging techniques provide emerging evidence of permanent microvascular tissue damage in the brain, suggesting that the effects of TIA may persist beyond resolution of focal symptoms. It's not the thought that counts: Allostasis at the core of brain function.

In psychology and neuroscience, scientific questions are often framed in terms of mental activity (e.g., cognition, emotion, and perception); however, the brain is an organ with a particular function that only it can fulfill. Converging evidence suggests that this function is allostasis: the predictive regulation of competing demands from internal bodily systems. We review evidence for a distributed allostatic system that organizes whole-brain signaling, scaffolds psychological phenomena, and places bodily regulation at the core of brain structure. We also demonstrate, with an example from Alz

Chronic heroin use disorder and the brain: Current evidence and future implications.

The incidence of chronic heroin use disorder, including overdose deaths, has reached epidemic proportions. Here we summarise and evaluate our knowledge of the relationship between chronic heroin use disorder and the brain through a narrative review. A broad range of areas was considered including causal mechanisms, cognitive and neurological consequences of chronic heroin use and novel neuroscience-based clinical interventions. Chronic heroin use is associated with limited or very limited evidence of impairments in memory, cognitive impulsivity, non-planning impulsivity, compulsivity and decis

Executive functioning component mechanisms and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Executive functioning refers to a set of processes involved in complex, goal-directed thought and behavior involving multiple brain regions (e.g., prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, basal ganglia) and multiple neurotransmitters (e.g., dopamine, glutamate, gamma-aminobutyric acid). People with schizophrenia exhibit executive functioning deficits that are associated with treatment-refractory aspects of the disorder. Although there is general consensus about what cognitive tasks involve executive functioning, there is disagreement about the specific cognitive mechanisms that comprise

Behavioral techniques for controlling visual stimuli to modulate visual processing in the brain and their implementation in augmented reality technology.

This study reviews the behavioral techniques that control visual stimuli to systematically modulate visual processing in an observer's brain. These techniques are indirect but more affordable than more-direct techniques for stimulating the brain. The limitations of these techniques and the calibrations necessary for them are also discussed. Some of the behavioral techniques can be also used in field studies by making use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology and a head-mounted display (HMD). The AR HMDs for the behavioral techniques was assembled by combining a smartphone and a wearable stereos

Future horizons: Toward an integrated neuroscience of sleep.

Sleep is now recognized as a vital biological process with roles beyond rest, including neurodevelopment, memory, emotional regulation, metabolism, immune function, and neuroprotection. Advances in neuroscience and technology reveal that sleep is an active, multifaceted process involving multiple brain and body systems. This chapter explores how neural networks, waste clearance, circadian rhythms, immune responses, and cognition interact to influence brain health and disease. We examine sleep's connections to neurodegeneration, mental illness, aging, and cognitive resilience. We also highlight

Cerebral localization in antiquity.

Fragments of neurology can be found in the oldest medical writings in antiquity. Recognizable cerebral localization is seen in Egyptian medical papyri. Most notably, the Edwin Smith papyrus describes hemiplegia after a head injury. Similar echoes can be seen in Homer, the Bible, and the pre-Hippocratic writer Alcmaeon of Croton. While Biblical writers thought that the heart was the seat of the soul, Hippocratic writers located it in the head. Alexandrian anatomists described the nerves, and Galen developed the ventricular theory of cognition whereby mental functions are classified and localize

The neurobiology of psychopathic traits in youths.

Conduct disorder is a childhood behaviour disorder that is characterized by persistent aggressive or antisocial behaviour that disrupts the child's environment and impairs his or her functioning. A proportion of children with conduct disorder have psychopathic traits. Psychopathic traits consist of a callous-unemotional component and an impulsive-antisocial component, which are associated with two core impairments. The first is a reduced empathic response to the distress of other individuals, which primarily reflects reduced amygdala responsiveness to distress cues; the second is deficits in d

What is the role of motor simulation in action and object recognition? Evidence from apraxia.

An important issue in contemporary cognitive neuroscience concerns the role of motor production processes in perceptual and conceptual analysis. To address this issue, we studied the performance of a large group of unilateral stroke patients across a range of tasks using the same set of common manipulable objects. All patients (n = 37) were tested for their ability to demonstrate the use of the objects, recognize the objects, recognize the corresponding object-associated pantomimes, and imitate those same pantomimes. At the group level we observed reliable correlations between object use and p

[Related noise exposure and auditory consequence during transcranial magnetic stimulation: new insights and review of the literature].

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive neurostimulation tool with increasing therapeutic applications in neurology, psychiatry and in the treatment of chronic tinnitus, and with a growing interest in cognitive neuroscience. One of its side effects is the loud click sound generated simultaneously to the magnetic pulse, which depends both on the equipment and rTMS intensity. This impulse sound could transiently modify peripheral hearing mechanisms, and hence hearing thresholds, both in patients and in rTMS practitioners. Furthermore, if no precautions are taken, es

Neuroeducation and Genetics.

Nowadays, more and more educators are turning to neuroscience to be able to discover how children's brains and cognitive development are shaped by their learning experiences. This article discusses the link between neuroeducation and genetics. Several learning disabilities arise from specific genetic characteristics. The contribution of neuroscience is remarkable as it helps to understand the working mechanisms and organization of the brain, from the nerve cell to the integrated nervous system, to bridge the organic bases of behavior with their potential applications. In addition, research in
