The perceived value of clinical reflective work undertaken by radiography students in Ireland.

INTRODUCTION: Self-reflection is promoted by the regulatory body CORU to support professional development and improve clinical practice. However, heavy workloads and the use of reflection as a formal assessment tool may reduce engagement. Limited research has explored students' perspectives on self-reflection. This study aimed to assess students' perceptions of its value and factors influencing engagement during clinical placement. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted with undergraduate and graduate-entry radiography students at a single institution. Data was collected using a Likert-

Transformative Moral Repair Following Interpersonal Transgressions: Post-Transgression Relationship Growth.

Research often views relationship repair through a reparative lens of relationship partners attempting to fix what was damaged or broken by the transgression. We argue here for a transformative lens to view transgressions as potential catalysts for the strengthening of relationships or what we term: post-transgression relationship growth (PTRG). However, we also argue that PTRG is more likely achieved when the transgression is dealt with dyadically via a constructive process of co-reflection. Results from a pilot study and two pre-registered three-wave longitudinal studies provided validation

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex enhances reflective judgment and decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Accounts of cognitive processes in judgment and decision-making are frequently based on a dual-process framework, which reflects two qualitatively different types of processing: intuitive (Type 1) and analytical (Type 2) processes. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the effects of bilateral transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on judgment and decision-making performance. METHODS: Participants received anodal tDCS stimulation to the right DLPFC, left DLPFC or sham. There were 3 tasks: vignettes measuring heuristic thin

Brooding, Reflection, and Distraction: Relation to Non-Suicidal Self-Injury versus Suicide Attempts.

The present study examined the relation between cognitive response styles (i.e., brooding, reflection, distraction) and cognitive inflexibility in differentially predicting history of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) only, suicide attempt (SA) only, or both (NSSI + SA). College students (N = 352) completed self-report measures of rumination, distraction, and self-harm history, a diagnostic interview, and a computerized task measuring cognitive flexibility. Brooding uniquely predicted SA-only history, while reflection uniquely predicted history of NSSI-only and NSSI + SA. Distraction was associa

Dark Personalities and Cognitive Styles: Two Distinct Dispositions Toward Antisocial Behaviour.

Previous research documented that Dark Tetrad (DT) traits and diminished cognitive abilities represent risk factors for antisocial behaviour. In the present cross-sectional study we tested the hypothesis that cognitive styles reflected in overconfidence, intuitive, simplistic, and fast thinking may mediate the links between DT and antisocial behaviour (N = 514). Our results showed that DT traits, with an emphasis on sadism and psychopathy, are positively correlated with antisocial behaviour, and certain cognitive styles: positive associations with overconfidence in physical appearance and dich

Adult Romantic Attachment and Parental Reflective Functioning in Parents of Pre-School Children: An Association Study With a Sex-Sensitive Approach.

BACKGROUND: Parental reflective functioning (PRF) has important developmental roles in the offspring. The relationship between parents' attachment style and PRF, as well as their intergenerational transmission, have been object of investigation in recent years, however, the studies have been mostly limited to mothers and conducted with semi-structured interviews. We aimed to assess this relationship using self-reports (PRF Questionnaire and Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised), and discuss their impact on child development. METHODS: A total of 240 parents of 262 pre-school children wer

Conducting a large-scale randomised controlled trial in children's social care: reflections on challenges, successes and lessons learned from the Reflective Fostering Study.

BACKGROUND: Research in Children's Social Care in the United Kingdom operates in a framework that was initially designed to support medical research within healthcare settings. Although adaptations to this framework have been made for social care settings, our experience suggested that significant systemic and organisational challenges to conducting large-scale randomised controlled trials in fostering services in the United Kingdom still remain, which work against the likelihood of such studies being completed successfully. A further challenge we faced was that that many fostering services we

Learning from authentic patient narratives in nursing education using Gibbs' Reflective Cycle: A qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis.

AIM: This study aimed to explore what nursing students learned from a real-life narrative shared by a person living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in a classroom setting and how this experience shaped their professional awareness within a structured reflective framework informed by Gibbs' Reflective Cycle. BACKGROUND: Patient narratives can strengthen experiential and reflective learning by helping students move beyond disease-focused knowledge toward a more person-centred understanding of illness. However, evidence remains limited on how structured reflection captures learning from chronic ill

A Positive Role of Negative Mood on Creativity: The Opportunity in the Crisis of the COVID-19 Epidemic.

The COVID-19 epidemic is associated with negative mood, which has the potential to be a powerful driver of creativity. However, the influence of negative mood on cognitive creativity and emotional creativity remains elusive. Previous research has indicated that self-focused attention is likely to be related to both negative mood and creativity. The current study introduced two self-focused attention variables (i.e., rumination, reflection) to explore how negative mood might contribute to cognitive creativity and emotional creativity. Based on a sample of 351 participants, our study found that

Brain activation during self- and other-reflection in bipolar disorder with a history of psychosis: Comparison to schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: Reflecting on the self and on others activates specific brain areas and contributes to metacognition and social cognition. The aim of the current study is to investigate brain activation during self- and other-reflection in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). In addition, we examined whether potential abnormal brain activation in BD patients could distinguish BD from patients with schizophrenia (SZ). METHODS: During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 17 BD patients, 17 SZ patients and 21 healthy controls (HCs) performed a self-reflection task. The task consisted of sen

Physical aggression is associated with heightened social reflection impulsivity.

Physical aggression harms individuals, disrupts social functioning across multiple forms of psychopathology, and leads to destruction within communities. Physical aggression is associated with aberrations in the interpretation of ambiguous information. However, the specific cognitive mechanisms supporting this link remain elusive. One potentially relevant cognitive mechanism is reflection impulsivity, the amount of information gathered during decision-making. Reflection impulsivity characterizes how individuals resolve ambiguity in the process of forming judgments when multiple interpretations

Developing an interprofessional self-reflection logbook in reproductive health in low-middle income countries: educational design research.

PURPOSE: Remoteness from institutions challenges supervision in interprofessional education (IPE) in a community setting in reproductive health in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In this setting, IPE would benefit from an instrument that supports self-reflection. The use of logbooks could provide such an instrument. This study aims to develop and validate a logbook as a self-reflection instrument. METHODS: The authors used an Educational Design Research (EDR) approach to develop a logbook as a self-reflection instrument for an IPE on reproductive health in a community setting in Indo

Mentalization-Based Therapy for Children and Families: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Recent Literature.

This systematic review evaluated the impact of Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) parenting interventions on parental reflective functioning (PRF, the operationalized measure of the metalizing construct), child psychosocial outcomes, and parenting factors. A meta-analysis of studies measuring PRF using the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ) indicated small, non-significant effects, with high heterogeneity across studies. Narrative synthesis of 19 studies suggested generally positive outcomes, including improvements in PRF, child emotional regulation and parental stress, though

Reflection impulsivity in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with panic disorder (PD) often exhibit a proclivity to conclude that an imminent catastrophe looms, drawing such conclusions from limited physical information. Reflection impulsivity, characterized by decision-making without adequate information, likely affects this bias. This study examines the relationship between reflection impulsivity and self-report impulsive features in individuals with PD. METHODS: Fifty patients with PD and 50 healthy controls (HC) participated to this study. Reflection impulsivity was assessed using the Information Sampling Task (IST), while t

How Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) reshapes students' creativity in higher education: A chain path modeling Study from "Exploration-Exploitation" to "Co-Creation-Reflection".

With the widespread integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) into higher education, its relationship with students' creativity has become a growing focus of scholarly inquiry. Drawing on data from 424 survey responses and in-depth interviews with eight students, this study constructs and examines a chain path model of Exploration-Exploitation-Co-Creation-Reflection to investigate how GAI-assisted learning processes are associated with students' creativity. Quantitative analyses indicate that exploratory and exploitative behaviors are positively associated with creativity, and th

Mediational role of rumination and reflection on irrational beliefs and distress.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive restructuring of maladaptive beliefs within many cognitive behavioural psychotherapies typically encourages the client to undertake self-reflection. However, whilst self-consciousness can aid self-regulation, it is also implicated in a broad Grange of psychopathologies. The extent to which self-consciousness is associated with psychological distress is yet to be fully determined, but recent literature suggests that irrational beliefs, as proposed within rational emotive behaviour theory (REBT) may play an important role. AIMS: The aim of the study was to test the med

[A ritual for humanity in intensive care units : A moment of silence and its possible effects].

Dealing with dying and death is an integral part of working in an intensive care unit, yet time pressure and workload often leave little room for emotional processing. A shared moment of silence offers intensive care staff the opportunity to pause after a patient's death, to uphold dignity, and to foster team reflection. This article explores the origin and significance of the ritual, summarizes the current evidence, and provides practical recommendations for its implementation-including appropriate language, involvement of relatives, framework conditions, and evaluation. The moment of silence

Training for Change: Developing Clinical Debriefing Champions in a Maternity Unit.

BACKGROUND: Clinical debriefing (CD) is a structured reflective conversation that supports experiential learning, enhances teamwork and contributes to patient safety. Despite established evidence for its benefits, implementation of CD within clinical environments remains challenging, with cultural barriers frequently cited as problematic. As part of a wider programme to embed CD within a busy maternity unit, a 1-day course in CD facilitation was delivered to an interprofessional group to develop debriefing skills and empower a group of staff to commit to CD practice. APPROACH: Course design w
