Clinical autonomic research : official journal of the Clinical Autonomic Research Society2006eng
Psychophysiological science proposes close interactions between cognitive processes and autonomic responses, yet the consequences of autonomic failure on cognitive functioning have not been documented. This pilot study investigates, for the first time, the cognitive profile of 14 patients with Pure Autonomic Failure (PAF). Each patient was administered a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests and neuroimaging investigation. A number of patients (n = 6) presented with cognitive impairment. The two most frequent types of impairment were: deficits of speed and attention, and executive

Understanding how our brain's perceptual system related to sensory evaluation of food can be affected by alcohol concentration is essential for both neuroscience and food science. This study applied EEG microstate analysis to characterize dynamic brain activity across seven alcohol levels (water, 5 %, 10 %, 20 %, 40 %, 53 % ABV, and Baijiu). Unlike traditional EEG analyses, microstate analysis provides a temporally resolved perspective on large-scale neural dynamics. Four microstates (A, B, C, D) were identified, with microstates B and C predominantly involved in sensory-emotional processing.

Obsessive-compulsive features are commonly found in high-achieving people including psychiatrists, psychologists, and scientists. These traits have a substantial but unrecognized cultural influence on psychiatric and psychological science and practice. This article reviews obsessive-compulsive mechanisms and discusses the ways they both promote and impede psychiatric and psychological science and practice. It examines them in relation to two of the dominant psychiatric and psychological paradigms of our era, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Finally

Adolescence or youth, spanning ages 12-24, represents peak vulnerability for mental health problems but also offers cognitive plasticity and thus optimal opportunity for interventions. Meanwhile, the science of mental imagery is fuelling innovations in mental health, but mostly in adults. In this review, we aim to spotlight mental imagery in youth mental health, highlighting its potential for driving theoretical and therapeutic innovations. We synthesise the current evidence for imagery's role in understanding and addressing psychopathology, focussing on emerging youth data. Central to this re

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become the primary cause of dementia. It shows a progressive cognitive dysfunction with degenerating neurons. Acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) propagate the cognitive ability and it consists of two primary members namely muscarinic (mAChRs) and nicotinic receptors (nAChRs). Where mAChRs is G-protein coupled receptor, (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels. The conventional therapeutic regimen for AD consists of three acetylcholinestearse inhibitors while a single NMDA receptor antagonist. Researchers around the globe are developing new and modifying the

This paper reviews current progress in genetics in relation to the understanding of human cognition. It is argued that genetics occupies a prominent place in the future of cognitive science, and that cognitive scientists should play an active role in the process. Recent research in genetics and developmental neuroscience is reviewed and argued to provide a new perspective on the timeless questions of innateness and modularity. The special case of the genetic bases of language is further discussed, with the study of developmental dyslexia as an exemplary entry point. This Special Issue puts tog

This research is part of a larger project to situate Black lived experiences and narratives in the science curricula. This work provides further analyses and conceptualization of a portion of prior work. In this study, Black science capital serves as a context for inquiry explorations into scientific, science-related, and non-science inquiries, depending on preservice teachers' interests. Participants were undergraduate elementary education majors enrolled in a second-semester science methods course at an Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Pre- and post-surveys consisted of two

This study tests if the drives to empathize (E) and systemize (S), measured by the Systemizing Quotient-Revised (SQ-R) and Empathy Quotient (EQ), show effects of sex and academic degree. The responses of 419 students from the Humanities and the Physical Sciences were analyzed in terms of the E-S theory predictions. Results confirm that there is an interaction between sex, degree and the drive to empathize relative to systemize. Female students in the Humanities on average had a stronger drive to empathize than to systemize in comparison to males in the Humanities. Male students in the Sciences

Cognitive impairments are a common consequence in people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Compensatory cognitive training is a therapeutic strategy that offers alternative methods to manage cognitive deficits. This systematic review aims to examine the effects of compensatory cognitive training on cognitive function in people with TBI. We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, MEDLINE, PEDro, Web of Science, REHABDATA, and EMBASE from inception until October 2023. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the selected studies. Of 318 articles, eight studies (n = 615)

We present three challenges to Thomas' theory leveraging our expertise in social and cognitive development. First, Thomas' theory fails to capture defining relationship characteristics, necessitating consideration of relationship science. Second, we argue that declaring innate knowledge of relationships is premature. Third, we propose that in the core domain of social cognition, relationship and sociomoral representations exist simultaneously without need for replacement.

Background/Objectives: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a clinically important state associated with an increased risk of future cognitive decline and dementia. Behaviour change interventions may support risk reduction and self-management in cognitively vulnerable adults. However, the extent to which the transtheoretical model (TTM) has been used in this population has not been clearly mapped. This scoping review examined TTM-based, TTM-informed, and TTM-congruent behaviour change interventions for adults with MCI, subjective cognitive concerns, or elevated dementia risk. Methods: This scopi

Integrating metabolism into cognitive science is essential. Beyond a mere constraint, metabolism may be constitutive of cognition itself. This requires expanding metabolism beyond neuronal energy use to include glial contributions, compartmentalized and dynamic processes, and broader brain-body interactions (e.g., interoception). Capturing this complexity will require more refined, integrative models, potentially leveraging artificial intelligence to unify multiscale biological data.

There is no consensus regarding the association between dysphagia and cognition. The aim of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the available evidence on the direction and strength of the association between dysphagia and cognition. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science were searched for studies about the association between dysphagia and cognition. A random effects model was used to determine weighted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the impact of each individual study on the pooled results. A total of 1427 p

OBJECTIVE: A model for the development of anxiety disorders (panic disorder with or without agoraphobia) is needed. Patients with an implantable cardioverter/defibrillator (ICD) are exposed to repeated electric shocks. If the theory of anxiety development by aversive classic conditioning processes is valid, these repeated shocks should lead to an increased risk of anxiety disorders. To study this hypothesis, we retrospectively studied 72 patients after implantation of an automatic ICD.
METHODS: Patients were assessed with the semistructured Diagnostic Interview of Psychiatric Disease 1 to 6 y

Despite the extensive evidence supporting the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation, differences in results may be due to the influence of cognitive and non-cognitive aspects in people with dementia. The aim of this systematic review is to identify the most reliable variables in forecasting the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation in people with mild to moderate dementia. According to PRISMA guidelines, the research was conducted using five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, APA PsycInfo), considering randomized controlled trials. A total of six studies were included. Diff
