SARS-CoV-2 and influenza coinfection throughout the COVID-19 pandemic: an assessment of coinfection rates, cohort characteristics, and clinical outcomes.

Case reports of patients infected with COVID-19 and influenza virus ("flurona") have raised questions around the prevalence and severity of coinfection. Using data from HHS Protect Public Data Hub, NCBI Virus, and CDC FluView, we analyzed trends in SARS-CoV-2 and influenza hospitalized coinfection cases and strain prevalences. We also characterized coinfection cases across the Mayo Clinic Enterprise from January 2020 to April 2022. We compared expected and observed coinfection case counts across different waves of the pandemic and assessed symptoms and outcomes of coinfection and COVID-19 mono

Literature Review on HIV-Mtb Coinfection and Stroke Risk.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading global cause of infectious disease. Growing evidence suggests that TB significantly increases the risk of comorbidity in HIV+ patients, particularly acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Prognosis is often poor, highlighting the need for early prevention and intervention. However, exact mechanisms linking HIV-Mtb coinfection and stroke remain poorly understood. A review of articles from 2016 to 2026 was conducted to study the risk of ischemic stroke and treatment strategies in HIV-Mtb coinfection. Both HIV and Mtb can increase stroke risk, but pathogenesis of the coinfect

Fatal Mpox Coinfection in Advanced AIDS: A Case Report.

The mpox virus (MPXV) is a zoonotic pathogen that has been causing a worldwide pandemic outbreak since 2022, posing a significant threat to global public health security. During this outbreak, monkeypox has been more prevalent among immunocompromised individuals, particularly those infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). We report a case of a 21-year-old male patient with advanced AIDS in China who developed severe complications, including skin tissue infection, proctitis, and conjunctivitis, following monkeypox infection. Despite early aggressive treatment, the patient ultimately su

Severe coinfection of dengue and malaria: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In countries like Sudan, where several infectious diseases are prevalent, health care providers should not be satisfied with initial detection of a single pathogen and whenever it is feasible, they should investigate coinfections. Infections with high mortality or severe morbidity should be prioritized during the differential diagnosis particularly for diseases with similar clinical manifestations to reduce the death and disability rates. However, this requires substantial improvement in the diagnostic capacity. ABSTRACT: Here we report a case of dengue and malaria coinf

Coinfection of viruses in children with community-acquired pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Virus, particularly respiratory tract virus infection is likely to co-occur in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Study focusing on the association between common viruses coinfection and children with CAP is rare. We aimed to study the association between seven common viruses coinfection and clinical/laboratory indexes in children with CAP. METHODS: Six hundred and eighty-four CAP cases from our hospital were enrolled retrospectively. Seven common viruses, including influenza A (FluA), influenza B (FluB), human parainfluenza virus (HPIV), Esptein-Barr virus (EBV), c

HIV-TB Coinfection: Current Therapeutic Approaches and Drug Interactions.

The co-occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) infection poses a significant global health challenge. Treatment of HIV and TB co-infection often necessitates combination therapy involving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV and anti-TB medications, which introduces the potential for drug-drug interactions (DDIs). These interactions can significantly impact treatment outcomes, the efficacy of treatment, safety, and overall patient well-being. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the DDIs between anti-HIV and anti-TB drugs as well as potential a

COVID-19 and Mucormycosis Coinfection: How Challenging It Is.

Recently, cases of rhinoorbital mucormycosis in people diagnosed with COVID-19 have been reported from India particularly. Diabetes mellitus though happens to be an independent risk factor both for severe COVID-19 and mucormycosis, administration of steroids is attributed as a precipitating factor for acquiring the comorbid condition. This opportunistic fungal infection is highly angioinvasive in nature because of which, clinical outcome of infection is invariably poor, especially with rhinocerebral or rhinoorbitocerebral variety of mucormycosis. However, effective management depends upon time

Coinfection of COVID-19 and Dengue: A Case Report.

While the COVID-19 pandemic takes the world by storm, dengue-endemic regions risk developing a co-epidemic in COVID-19/dengue coinfection. With both infections as causes of high morbidity rates, the potentially fatal outcomes of coinfection are even greater, and several cases are emerging, severe and moderate, showing how common it may become in certain regions. The case reported here shows a 38-year-old male patient with high-grade fever, with complaints of nausea, joint, and muscle aches, all characteristic symptoms of COVID-19 and dengue. Initially suspected of being infected with COVID-19

COVID-19 Coinfection With Mucormycosis in a Diabetic Patient.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a form of β-Coronavirus of the Coronaviridae family, has been causing infection among humans worldwide leading to a pandemic emergency. New strains of SARS-CoV-2 have been evolving unceasingly, presenting with various systemic and oral manifestations. There has been an increase in the incidence of secondary infection in the coronavirus infected individual either due to pre-existing factors or the virus by itself is causing such infection, which is still unclear. As it is already known, immunocompromised and uncontrolled diabetic pat

CMV coinfection in treatment refractory immune checkpoint inhibitor colitis.

As immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are increasingly used, clinicians are more frequently encountering the side effects of these therapies. ICIs have been implicated in numerous adverse effects against healthy tissues. We present a case of a patient who developed treatment refractory checkpoint inhibitor colitis. Following colonoscopy, it was discovered that this patient had cytomegalovirus (CMV) coinfection. This case report highlights the importance of undertaking an appropriate assessment, including endoscopic and histologic investigation, of patients with presumed ICI colitis. Accuratel

Coinfection of H1N1 Influenza and Scrub Typhus-A Review.

The H1N1 influenza infection usually coincides with the typical scrub typhus season in North India. This leads to diagnostic difficulties due to their similar and non-specific symptoms. We describe three patients with confirmed co-infection of pandemic (H1N1) influenza and scrub typhus who had presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome. A systematic review of database yielded one case of scrub typhus and H1N1 influenza co-infection reported from South Korea. Co-infection of influenza with tropical infections may not be uncommon in endemic countries and hence a high index of suspicion o

Mycoplasma genitalium coinfection in men with symptomatic gonococcal urethritis.

OBJECTIVES: International guidelines recommend Mycoplasma genitalium testing, preferably using an assay to detect macrolide resistance-associated mutations, for men presenting with non-gonococcal urethritis, but there is no specific guidance on such testing for men with gonococcal urethritis. METHODS: This study aimed to estimate the proportion of men with gonococcal urethritis who have coinfection with M. genitalium through a retrospective analysis of cases of symptomatic urethral gonorrhoea at Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre in 2017 and 2018. RESULTS: Fourteen of 184 (7.6%, 95% CI 3.7

Case Report: Coinfection with Rickettsia monacensis and Orientia tsutsugamushi.

Rickettsia monacensis and Orientia tsutsugamushi are bacteria of the family Rickettsiaceae, which causes fever, rash, and eschar formation; outdoor activities are a risk factor for Rickettsiaceae infection. A 75-year-old woman presented with fever, rash, and eschar and was confirmed as being scrub typhus based on a nested-polymerase chain reaction (N-PCR) test for a 56-kDa gene of O. tsutsugamushi; the genome was identified as the Boryong genotype. In addition, a pan-Rickettsia real-time PCR test was positive and a N-PCR test using a Rickettsia-specific partial outer membrane protein A (rOmpA)
