Sperm can't take the heat: Short-term temperature exposures compromise fertility of male bumble bees (Bombus impatiens).

Bumble bee (genus Bombus) populations are increasingly under threat from habitat fragmentation, pesticides, pathogens, and climate change. Climate change is likely a prime driver of bumble bee declines but the mechanisms by which changing climates alter local abundance, leading to shifts in geographic range are unclear. Heat tolerance is quite high in worker bumble bees (CTmax ∼ 48-55 °C), making it unlikely for them to experience these high temperatures, even with climate warming. However, the thermal tolerance of whole organisms often exceeds that of their gametes; many insects can be steril

Evolutionary consequences of extreme climate events.

Extreme climate events, such as storms, droughts or cold waves, wreak havoc on human and natural systems, but they can also catalyze rapid evolutionary change. Because such extreme events have historically been rare and difficult to forecast, studies of their biological impacts have mostly been serendipitous, limiting our understanding of their evolutionary consequences. However, with extreme climate events now increasing in frequency and severity due to human-induced global change, the opportunity - and need - to study their evolutionary consequences has grown. Drawing on a set of case studie

Heat, Cold, and Environmental Emergencies in Athletes.

With the increase in outdoor events, there is an inevitable rise in climate-related environmental emergencies. Heat exposure can place athletes at risk for life-threatening heatstroke which requires emergent diagnosis and rapid in-field management. Cold exposure can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other nonfreezing injuries that require prompt evaluation and management to minimize morbidity and mortality. Altitude exposure can lead to acute mountain sickness or other serious neurologic or pulmonary emergencies. Finally, harsh climate exposure can be life-threatening and require appropriate

The Arctic vegetation is more sensitive to heatwave-induced photosynthetic decline than other climate zones in Europe (2009-2017).

This study shows that the photosynthesis of Arctic terrestrial plants is more vulnerable and sensitive to heatwaves’ impacts than plants in other European climate zones. The results of this study indicate distinct effects of heatwaves among different climate zones in Europe (2009–2017). The Arctic climate zone shows a steeper decline in photosynthesis during heatwaves, as revealed by geographically and temporally weighted regression analysis based on biophysical factors such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Leaf Area Index, compared to arid, temperate, and cold climate zones.

SARS-CoV-2 Virulence: Interplay of Floating Virus-Laden Particles, Climate, and Humans.

With the emergence of COVID-19, it is important to address the possible scenarios of SARS-CoV-2 virulence. Although several researchers have addressed the possible mechanisms of enveloped virus transfection, for example, influenza, here, the relationship between exhaled virus laden-particles, the climate, and transfection probability is discussed by interpreting the findings of prior studies. Importantly, the higher probability of viral transfection in cold and dry public spaces such as near cold shelves of groceries is illustrated. Thus, additional protective measures in such spaces are recom

Estimation of household health cost and climate adaptation cost with its health related determinants: empirical evidences from western Nepal.

Limited evidence is available concerning the household-level costs of prevailing diseases and the potential cost of climate adaptation in Nepal. This study estimates these costs and assesses the relationships between prevalent diseases and climate adaptation at the household level using survey data from 420 households. An ingredients-based approach was used to estimate the cost of health and adaptation, and a Probit regression model was used to analyze the relationship between prevalent diseases and climate adaptation costs. Household direct curative costs are the highest among health cost com

Disentangling tropicalization and deborealization in marine ecosystems under climate change.

As climate change accelerates, species are shifting poleward and subtropical and tropical species are colonizing temperate environments.1-3 A popular approach for characterizing such responses is the community temperature index (CTI), which tracks the mean thermal affinity of a community. Studies in marine,4 freshwater,5 and terrestrial6 ecosystems have documented increasing CTI under global warming. However, most studies have only linked increasing CTI to increases in warm-affinity species. Here, using long-term monitoring of marine fishes across the Northern Hemisphere, we decomposed CTI cha

Health effects of milder winters: a review of evidence from the United Kingdom.

Cold-related mortality and morbidity remains an important public health problem in the UK and elsewhere. Health burdens have often reported to be higher in the UK compared to other countries with colder climates, however such assessments are usually based on comparison of excess winter mortality indices, which are subject to biases. Daily time-series regression or case-crossover studies provide the best evidence of the acute effects of cold exposure. Such studies report a 6% increase in all-cause deaths in England & Wales for every 1 °C fall in daily mean temperature within the top 5% of the c

Time-series analysis of climatic drivers of pediatric rotavirus and adenovirus infections in post-pandemic China.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and climate-sensitive transmission patterns of rotavirus (RV), adenovirus (AdV), and RV-AdV coinfections among children with acute gastroenteritis in Wuhan, China, during the post-COVID-19 era. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective time-series study of 53,088 pediatric patients tested for RV and AdV from April 2020 to August 2024. Age-stratified positivity rates were analyzed alongside temporal trends. Daily meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed) and air pollutants were incorporated into a generalized addi

Applicability of the universal thermal climate index for predicting the outbreaks of respiratory tract infections: a mathematical modeling approach.

Respiratory tract infections (RTI) are one of the most frequent reasons for medical consultations. As air temperature decreases, but also in connection with other meteorological parameters, evident seasonal fluctuations in the number of consultations for RTI can be observed. The Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is a complex meteorological index derived from an analysis of human thermal balance that depends on air temperature, air humidity, and wind speed. Our aims were to check if this index, although never used before for that purpose, is an adequate tool for forecasting seasonal increa

Health risk assessment of indoor formaldehyde exposure across Chinese residences: Effects of building material grades.

Prolonged exposure to elevated indoor formaldehyde levels poses significant health risk. This study investigates the emission characteristics of building materials, indoor environmental parameters, and their impacts on Chinese residents. Eleven representative cities across five climate zones in China were analyzed to predict indoor formaldehyde concentrations, assess population exposure doses, and evaluate cancer risks for three grades of building materials (E1, E0, and ENF). Results indicate that the average indoor formaldehyde concentrations ranged from 0.008 to 0.028 mg/m3 for ENF, 0.014-0.

Modelling the current and future temperature suitability of the UK for the vector Hyalomma marginatum (Acari: Ixodidae).

Hyalomma marginatum is the main vector of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and spotted fever rickettsiae in Europe. The distribution of H. marginatum is currently restricted to parts of southern Europe, northern Africa and Asia, and one of the drivers limiting distribution is climate, particularly temperature. As temperatures rise with climate change, parts of northern Europe currently considered too cold for H. marginatum to be able to survive may become suitable, including the United Kingdom (UK), presenting a potential public health concern. Here we use a series of modelling m

Whether climate change has particular effects on specific neurological diseases or not, the known impaired resilience to change affecting people with neurological diseases requires neurologists to have awareness of potential climate impacts and their management. Preparedness should include understanding of general national and local alerts and action sy

The consequences of climate change and male reproductive health: A review of the possible impact and mechanisms.

A global decline in male fertility has been reported, and climate change is considered a major cause of this. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, and results from greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide and methane that act as a blanket wrapped around the earth, trapping heat and elevating temperatures. Sad to say, the consequences of climatic variation are beyond the dramatic elevated temperature, they include cold stress, increased malnutrition, air pollution, cardiovascular diseases respiratory tract infections, cancer, sexually transmitted i

Climate adaptation in the public health sector in Africa: Evidence from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change National Communications.

Climate change has potential to affect human health in various ways. Extreme temperatures and cold both result in deaths, while the changing habitats favouring the breeding of vectors could result in the spread of diseases such as malaria, cholera and typhus. This article reviews climate change adaptation measures in the African public health sector. The evidence is drawn from National Communications of 21 countries as submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This article combines the literature review and grounded theory approaches with data obtained fr
