Identification and functional characteristics of key regulatory genes in Populus alba in response to cold stress.

Forest crops are particularly susceptible to cold stress after dormancy release. Newly emerged shoots are especially vulnerable, and shoot mortality can cause serious loss of biomass production. Revealing the molecular mechanisms of cold stress responses in forest trees is therefore crucial. Populus alba is a frost-resistant tree species distributed worldwide. In this study, we characterized the transcriptome of P. alba in response to cold stress and observed that a large number of genes were up-regulated in both root and leaf tissues. Through Mfuzz clustering and phylogenetic analysis, four e

Response of PIP aquaporins to long-term cold stress in two citrus rootstocks.

Cold is one of the most impactful abiotic stresses causing significant crop losses. Additionally, it is a major limiting factor, reducing cultivation areas, especially for tropical and subtropical species such as citrus. In this study, we conducted a physiological assessment of water balance, photosynthesis, fluorescence, and transcriptomic data, to further understand the response of aquaporins in the Valencia Delta Seedless variety grafted onto two rootstocks: Citrus macrophylla and Carrizo citrange, considered sensitive and tolerant rootstocks, respectively. After 6 weeks of exposure to 1°C

Cellular Responses to Cold Stress in Pampus argenteus: Involvement of Dusp5 in MAPK Signaling, Apoptosis Suppression, and Organelle Protection.

The silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) represents a commercially vital marine fish species. However, its aquaculture potential, especially in temperate northern regions, is critically constrained by pronounced cold sensitivity. Building upon preliminary investigations which demonstrated a significant inverse correlation between dusp5 expression levels and ambient water temperature, this study aimed to elucidate the functional mechanism of dusp5-a cold-inducible dual-specificity phosphatase affecting the MAPK pathway-in mediating cold stress adaptation. Utilizing cellular models subjected to dus

Cold Water Swimming-Benefits and Risks: A Narrative Review.

Cold water swimming (winter or ice swimming) has a long tradition in northern countries. Until a few years ago, ice swimming was practiced by very few extreme athletes. For some years now, ice swimming has been held as competitions in ice-cold water (colder than 5 °C). The aim of this overview is to present the current status of benefits and risks for swimming in cold water. When cold water swimming is practiced by experienced people with good health in a regular, graded and adjusted mode, it appears to bring health benefits. However, there is a risk of death in unfamiliar people, either due t

The transcription factor EIL1-MYB78 module negatively regulates cold tolerance in Actinidia chinensis.

Kiwifruit has become an important horticultural crop widely planted in temperate and subtropical regions. However, most commercially cultivated kiwifruit, particularly those of Actinidia chinensis, are highly sensitive to cold stress. To overcome this industrial bottleneck, it is crucial to reveal the molecular mechanisms behind cold stress responses, ultimately providing new insights into the breeding of cold-tolerant kiwifruit varieties. Here, we found that EIL1 negatively regulates cold tolerance of A. chinensis by directly binding to the promoters of CBF1 and CBF2 to inhibit their expressi

Cold stress reshapes gut microbiota and antibiotic resistance in ornamental fish (Cyprinus carpio).

Antimicrobial overuse in ornamental fish farming drives antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) proliferation, posing public health risks. However, the effects of cold stress on gut microbiota and ARGs in ornamental fish remain poorly understood. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR techniques to clarify the difference of gut microbes and ARGs in Cyprinus carpio exposed to temperatures of 4 °C and 25 °C. Tetracycline and sulfonamide resistance genes dominated carp intestinal ARGs at both 4 °C and 25 °C. Five high-risk ARGs (aadA-01, aadA-02, floR, dfrA1, tetM-

Genome-wide identification and cold stress expression of inducer of CBF expression (ICE) transcription factors in Taraxacum kok-saghyz.

Low-temperature stress severely restricts plant growth and agricultural production. The INDUCER OF CBF EXPRESSION (ICE) transcription factors are key regulators of the plant cold response. To investigate the molecular characteristics of the ICE gene family and their regulatory functions in response to low-temperature stress in Taraxacum kok-saghyz (TKS), we systematically identified 7 TksICEs in TKS at the whole-genome level, and simultaneously selected 3 HbICEs in Hevea brasiliensis for comparative analysis. Results showed that the ICE gene family mainly expanded via whole-genome duplication

Nighttime Cold Stress and Cardiovascular Emergency Hospitalizations: A Time-Series Analysis by Sex and Age in a Subtropical City.

BACKGROUND: Cold temperature can increase cardiovascular risks even in subtropical regions, where infrequent exposure and limited infrastructure may limit cold adaptation. Risks may intensify at night because of declining temperature and reduced thermoregulatory capacity during sleep, yet the impact of nighttime cold exposure remains underexplored. METHODS: A time-series ecological study using quasi-Poisson regression and distributed lag nonlinear models assessed associations between cold exposure and 417 044 emergency hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases, including acute myocardial i

Regulation of NO-Generating System Activity in Cucumber Root Response to Cold.

Nitric oxide (NO) functions as a signaling molecule in plant adaptation to changing environmental conditions. NO levels were found to increase in plants in response to low temperatures (LTs). However, knowledge of the pathways involved in enhanced NO production under cold stress is still limited. For this reason, we aimed to determine the role of different NO sources in NO generation in cucumber roots exposed to 10 °C for short (1 d) and long (6 d) periods. The short-term treatment of seedlings with LT markedly increased plasma membrane-bound nitrate reductase (PM-NR) activity and induced the

Characterisation of the MLP genes in peach postharvest cold storage and the regulatory role of PpMLP10 in the chilling stress response.

The major latex proteins/ripening-related proteins are a subfamily of the Bet v 1 protein superfamily and are commonly involved in plant development and responses to various stresses. However, the functions of MLPs in the postharvest cold storage of fruits remain uninvestigated. Herein, we identified 30 MLP genes in the peach (Prunus persica) genome that were clustered into three subgroups. Chromosomal location analysis revealed that the PpMLP genes were unevenly distributed on five of the eight peach chromosomes. Synteny analysis of the MLP genes between peach and seven other plant species (f

Permanence of the habituation of the initial responses to cold-water immersion in humans.

Sudden immersion in cold water initiates an inspiratory gasp response followed by uncontrollable hyperventilation and tachycardia. It is known that this response, termed the "cold shock" response, can be attenuated following repeated immersion. In the present investigation we examined how long this habituation lasts. Twelve healthy male volunteers participated in the experiment, they were divided into a control (C) group (n = 4), and a habituation (H) group (n = 8). In October, each subject undertook two 3-min head-out seated immersions into stirred water at 10 degrees C wearing swimming trunk

Appropriate cold stimulation changes energy distribution to improve stress resistance in broilers.

Appropriate cold stimulation can improve stress resistance in broilers and alleviate the adverse impacts of a cold environment. To investigate the effects of intermittent mild cold stimulation (IMCS) on energy distribution in the livers of broilers, 96 healthy 1-d-old Ross-308 male broilers were randomly divided into the control group (CC) and the cold stimulation group (H5). The CC group was raised at a normal thermal temperature, i.e., 35 °C until 3 d, after which the temperature was dropped gradually by 0.5 °C/d until 20 °C at 33 d. This temperature was maintained until 49 d. The H5 group w

Effects of Cold Stress on the Morphology and Thermogenic Capacity of Adipose Tissue in Various Anatomical Depots of Min pigs.

Cold exposure is a major physiological stimulus that promotes adipose tissue browning and enhances thermogenic capacity. As a cold-tolerant breed, Min pigs may rely on distinct adaptive mechanisms in adipose tissues, but how different adipose depots respond to cold stress remains unclear. This study systematically examines how cold exposure affects adipose tissue morphology, thermogenic gene expression, and the differentiation potential of preadipocytes derived from four adipose depots-cervical, axillary, perirenal, and inguinal-in Min pigs. Adipose tissues from the four depots were collected

Clinical detection of 'cold stress' is overlooked: an online survey of healthcare workers to explore the gap in neonatal thermal care in low-resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypothermia has been widely regarded as a major contributory factor to neonatal mortality and morbidity in low-resource settings. The high prevalence of potentially preventable hypothermia today urges an investigation into why neonates still become hypothermic despite awareness of the problem and established thermal care guidelines. This study aimed to explore the gaps in knowledge and practices of neonatal thermal care among healthcare workers in low-resource settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey was performed online among healthcare workers in

O-GlcNAc / Akt pathway regulates glucose metabolism and reduces apoptosis in liver of piglets with acute cold stress.

Cold stress is one of the serious factors restricting the development of animal husbandry in cold areas. Cold exposure can easily lead to cold stress, slow growth and even death of newborn animals. O-GlcNAcylation modification can act as type of "stress receptor" and"nutrition sensor" in a variety of stress responses, however, it is not clear how O-GlcNAcylation can regulate glucose metabolism in the liver of piglets under cold stress. In this study, piglets 21 days of age were exposed to 4 °C for 4 h or 8 h in a phytotron. Serum cortisol and other stress hormones were used to assess body stat

NAC-Like Gene GIBBERELLIN SUPPRESSING FACTOR Regulates the Gibberellin Metabolic Pathway in Response to Cold and Drought Stresses in Arabidopsis.

To investigate the functions of NAC-like genes, we reported the characterization and functional analysis of one Arabidopsis NAC-like gene which showed a novel function in the regulation of gibberellin biosynthesis and named as GIBBERELLIN SUPPRESSING FACTOR (GSF). GSF acts as a transcriptional activator and has transactivation capacity based on yeast transcription activity assays. YFP + GSF-TM (lacking a transmembrane domain) fusion proteins accumulated in the nuclei, while the YFP + GSF fusion proteins only accumulated in the ER membrane and were absent from the nuclei. These results revealed

Beyond hypothermia: mechanisms of death, rescue, and prevention in cold water immersion.

Cold water immersion (CWI) is a significant cause of open-water drowning mortality. Epidemiological data challenge the prevailing assumption that hypothermia is the primary mechanism of death, pointing instead to acute responses that precede core cooling. The four-stage model (cold shock response, swimming failure, hypothermia, and circum-rescue collapse) provides a framework for understanding the sequential threats faced by an immersion victim. The cold shock response, triggered within seconds of immersion, can cause death through aspiration, hypocapnia-induced cerebral hypoperfusion, and car

NtZFP66L1 Regulates Cold Tolerance in Tobacco by Modulating the ABA Signaling Pathway and the GLK1-Mediated Adaptive Pathway.

Cold stress is a major environmental challenge that affects tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) growth and yield potential. However, the precise mechanisms underlying the tobacco plant's response remain largely unclear. In this study, we identified a cold-induced CCCH-type zinc finger protein, NtZFP66L1, as an important positive regulator of cold tolerance in tobacco. Overexpressing NtZFP66L1 improved cold resistance, while knocking it out made plants more sensitive to cold. NtZFP66L1 enhances cold tolerance by targeting NtPP2C-37 and NtGLK1; knocking out NtPP2C-37 increased cold tolerance, while l
