Saturation kinetics of iodine accumulation in Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae): implications for feed biofortification.

Iodine deficiency remains a widespread nutritional concern, and biofortification of feed ingredients is a promising complement to salt iodization. Insects, such as the yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), are gaining attention as sustainable protein sources, yet little is known about their capacity to accumulate iodine. This study quantified dose-dependent iodine accumulation and excretion, and assessed adverse effects, in T. molitor larvae reared on diets spanning more than 3 orders of magnitude of supplemented iodine; saturation kinetics here refers to dose

Redescription of Agrilus zanthoxylumi Hou & Feng, 1989 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) based on newly designated neotype.

Prickly ash borer (PAB) Agrilus zanthoxylumi was first identified but undescribed by Mr. Tao-qian Hou, Zoological Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in the 1980s. This specific name first appeared in the book Cultivation and pest control of Sichuan pepper by Li et al. (1989a) as A. zanthoxylumi Hou & Feng. We have made various efforts to find the original named specimens, but both Hou's and Li's specimens of this species were lost. This insect causes significant damage in prickly ash orchards across northwestern and southwestern China, becoming one of the important economic pests in the p

A new species of Lomechusoides (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from Formica polyctena anthills in Northeastern Europe.

Lomechusoides umbrosus sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae: Lomechusini) is described, a socially integrated myrmecophile associated with Formica polyctena Foerster, 1850. The species is documented from Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Belarus, and Western Russia (incl. Ural Mountains) based on both newly collected and museum specimens. Field observations show beetles on the surface of host mounds and within nest material, indicating a close association with red wood ant hills. Morphological comparison of the new species and similar Lomechusoides species is provided, including a

Functional Allometry of Sexually Selected Traits in Tetraopes tetrophthalmus Red Milkweed Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

The allometry of sexually selected traits is highly variable. Some traits scale steeply in relation to body size while other traits scale more shallowly. Still others scale proportionately to body size. One explanation for this variability is trait function. Sexually selected traits should scale differently according to the function that they perform-the functional allometry hypothesis. Here, we investigate the functional allometry hypothesis in red milkweed beetles, Tetraopes tetrophthalmus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), a species that possesses multifunctional sexually selected traits. Males us

Pre-Courtship Behavior of Proholopterus chilensis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in a Nothofagus obliqua (Nothofagaceae) Forest.

The pre-courtship behavior of Proholopterus chilensis on Nothofagus obliqua trees was recorded for the first time, documenting a putative female "calling" behavior and the consequent male "oriented search," enabling the description of behavioral units, sequences, frequencies, and degrees of stereotypy. Post-resting activity in both sexes began with walking and grooming during the first hour of the scotophase, following a period of daytime inactivity. Subsequently, females extended their ovipositor both horizontally and vertically, alternating between contact with the tree substrate and, simult

Anti-insect activity of benzylacetone and its structural analogues against Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Several studies have confirmed that the volatile oil of Rhododendron anthopogonoides Maxim has good anti-insect activity and is expected to become an environmentally friendly botanical insecticide, with benzylacetone as its main active component. Benzylacetone has a simple chemical structure, containing only three elements of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, low toxicity, and easy degradation. Therefore, in this study, benzylacetone and its seven structural analogues were selected for testing their anti-insect activity to Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in order to explore

Comparative transcriptomic and metabolomics analysis of modified atmosphere responses in Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae).

Modified atmosphere is effective in controlling Tribolium castaneum Herbst, but it has adaptations. Comprehending the potential mechanism of resistance to T. castaneum in a modified atmosphere will help advance related management methods. This study conducted a comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis to understand the physiological mechanism of T. castaneum in adapting to CO2 stress. Results showed that there were a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in T. castaneum treated with different concentrations of CO2. Gene ontology (GO) analysis revealed significant enr

Long-term monitoring data on Popilliajaponica (Newman, 1838) (Coleoptera, Rutelidae) across the Azorean Islands.

BACKGROUND: The Japanese Beetle, Popilliajaponica Newman, 1838 (Coleoptera, Rutelidae), is a univoltine agricultural pest that poses a serious threat to various agricultural crops. For more than 16 years, the Azorean official authorities have implemented a Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) programme that is crucial for understanding the dynamics of insect pests, such as the Japanese Beetle, and their impacts on agricultural ecosystems. The significance of this long-term monitoring extends beyond understanding the pest's life cycle. By sharing this long-term monitoring data with the scientif

Unexpected discovery of a new Podonychus species in Kyushu, Japan (Coleoptera, Elmidae, Elminae, Macronychini).

OBJECTIVE: As one of the important active barriers in the human organism, endothelial cells (EC) play a central role in the biological reaction to a variety of stimuli, e.g. during the induction and regulation of inflammation, as well as in the reaction to transplantation and biomaterial implantation. In the study of endothelial function, the most widely used in vitro model is that of human umbilical vein EC (HUVEC), i.e. an EC type of embryonic and macrovascular origin. However, many of the important pathological processes occur at microvascular level, thus questioning the validity of the HUV

Toxicity of five Cry proteins against the insect pest Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera: Chrisomelidae: Bruchinae).

The beetle Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) causes severe post-harvest losses in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Under laboratory conditions, the susceptibility of A. obtectus to five coleopteran-specific Cry toxic proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Cry1Ba, Cry1Ia, Cry3Aa, Cry7Ab, and Cry23/37) was evaluated. After 30 days exposure, Cry proteins demonstrated high activity against A. obtectus adults (100% mortality). Proteins showed statistical differences in toxicity parameters compared to the control treatment, but the parameters were similar among them, and indicated that the final to

VOC emissions influence intra- and interspecific interactions among stored-product Coleoptera in paddy rice.

Olfaction is a pivotal sense for insects and granivorous pests may exploit grain volatiles for food selection. Tribolium confusum, is a secondary pest of stored cereals that benefits from primary pests' infestation, as other secondary feeders, triggering competition. This study aimed to evaluate the preferences of T. confusum females toward different-infested paddy rice, highlighting the impact of intra- and interspecific competition. Tribolium confusum showed positive chemotaxis toward rice infested by larvae of a primary pest (Sitophilus zeamais), but not for grain attacked by adults alone.

Interactions Between the Bud Rot Disease of Oil Palm and Rhynchophorus palmarum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.) causes great losses to the oil palm plantations, and therefore, the spatial and temporal distribution of this insect should be studied, to manage its populations. Insect sampling was done for 2 yr in an oil palm plantation from Colombia. In total, 60 pheromone traps were used in healthy palm trees and infected ones with the Bud Rot disease. On the other hand, developmental stages of this insect were quantified on healthy and diseased palms for two consecutive years. Number of adult R. palmarum per sampling was higher in the plantation with diseased palm trees, 3.85

Treatment outcome of Paederus dermatitis due to rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) on guinea pigs.

Linear dermatitis (or dermatitis linearis, DL) is a skin blistering inflammatory lesion caused by exposure to the pederin toxin from rove beetles. Although it is prevalent in many countries of the Middle East region, this is not a notifiable disease. In recent years, a number of clinical symptoms outbreaks of DL has been reported from a few neighboring countries of Iran, but no report of experimental treatment among small laboratory rodents is known. This is a prerequisite to ascertain the nature of the best treatment strategy in cases of infestation with these beetles, as it occurs among loca
