Buerger's disease is a type of vasculitis that predominantly affects small to medium arteries and the veins of the upper and lower extremities. Intestinal vessels are rarely involved. Intra-aortic balloon pump counterpulsation (IABP) has been shown to prolong life in critically ill cardiac patients. However, complications including distal emboli, balloon rupture, bleeding, limb loss, and bowel ischemia continue to be associated with them. We present a case of a 56-year-old male who suffered bowel ischemia as a result of a malpositioned IABP. While the benefit of such devices in critically ill patients is not disputed, patients as well as clinicians should be aware of the potential side effects and patients undergoing IABP placement should be monitored for complications.

The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors predictive of severe nonocclussive ischemic colitis (IC) requiring operation or resulting in mortality. One hundred seventeen patients with nonocclussive IC were identified and divided into two groups: those with severe disease (n = 24) and those with disease that resolved with supportive care (n = 93). Ischaemic colitis has many and different clinical features as it is often linked to the severity of ischaemic injury. In this paper two patients with clinical features of Crohn's disease are reported. In both patients the diagnosis has been confirmed with endoscopy and biopsy. They have been treated with specific therapy until they developed bowel obstruction in one case and peritonitis in the other. Both patients underwent laparotomy and the histological specimen showed a picture of ischaemic colitis. In one case a Dixon's resection was done, in the other Hartmann's operation.

Ischemic colitis is not well characterized in the young adult population, despite its commonness in older patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographics, etiology, clinical features, and prognosis of ischemic colitis in young adults. Twenty-five cases of non-infectious, macroscopic colitis, observed consecutively in patients over 70, were studied. The final diagnosis was, in 12 instances, ischemic colitis, in 10 instances cryptogenetic colitis (6 ulcerative colitis and 4 Crohn's diseases), and in 3 instances, non-classified colitis. Polyarteritis nodosa is a multisystem disease that involves the gastrointestinal tract in more than 50% of patients at some time during its course. Clinically apparent ischemic disease of the small bowel is the frequent site of involvement. The colon is less commonly involved, particularly as the initial presentation. We present a patient with polyarteritis nodosa noteworthy for prolonged nonbloody diarrhea, ischemic colitis with perforation, and pseudomembrane formation who had histological documentation of polyarteritis nodosa.
