INTRODUCTION: Microscopic colitis (MC) is a well-recognised cause of chronic diarrhoea in Western countries. It is classically associated with normal endoscopic findings and a higher prevalence among patients with autoimmune disease. Local information regarding this disease remains scarce. We identified patients diagnosed with MC over a five-year period, and then proceeded to analyse the clinical characteristics of these cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted by identifying all histologically confirmed colitis cases diagnosed at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia fr

Microscopic colitis is a common cause of chronic watery diarrhea with a great impact on patient quality of life. Microscopic colitis includes two histological subtypes: collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. Due to the increasing incidence and awareness of this disease over the last decades, several international guidelines have been recently published. However, there is still significant heterogeneity in the management of these patients, and treatments without solid scientific evidence support are often used in clinical practice. This article reviews the therapeutic role of budesonide i

BACKGROUND: Several medications have been identified as potential risk factors for microscopic colitis (MC), but evidence so far is hampered by methodological limitations.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the potential causal effects of previously implicated medications on risk for MC.
DESIGN: Emulation of 6 target trials.
SETTING: Sweden.
PARTICIPANTS: All residents in Sweden aged 65 years or older between 2006 and 2017 who met eligibility criteria (n = 191 482 to 2 634 777).
MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome was biopsy-verified MC. The date of diagnosis was obtained from the nationwide histopathol

OBJECTIVE: To study the epidemiological and clinical characteristics, and response to treatment in patients with microscopic colitis.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Epidemiological, clinical, blood test and endoscopic data were retrospectively collected from 113 patients with microscopic colitis. Response to treatment was analyzed in 104 of them. Efficacy and relapse after treatment with budesonide were assessed using survival curves (Kaplan-Meier).
RESULTS: 78% of the patients were women, with a mean age of 65 ± 16 years. In smokers, the mean age was 10 years younger. 48% of them had some concomitant

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Lymphocytic and collagenous colitis are types of microscopic colitis (MC) that commonly cause chronic watery diarrhea, but there are no macroscopic features of MC that can be detected during colonoscopy. Endoscopists therefore often collect multiple random colonic biopsies, potentially oversampling, increasing times of colonoscopy and slide review. We sought to identify sites from which biopsies could be taken and analyzed to identify patients with MC with a high level of sensitivity and determine the appropriate number of biopsies to take at these sites.
METHODS: We perfor

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are characterized by similar geographic distributions. We used a large database of pathology reports to analyze the geographic distribution of microscopic colitis (MC) and compare it with those of UC and CD.
METHODS: A population of 671,176 individual patients with colonic biopsies was studied stratified by gender and state of residence. The occurrence of each diagnosis MC, UC, or CD, was expressed as proportional rate per 1000 colonoscopies with biopsies from each individual state.
RESULTS: UC and CD tended to be common in states

BACKGROUND: An association between microscopic colitis and coeliac disease (CD) has been suggested in literature; however, population-based data are limited.
AIMS: To estimate the degree of association between these two diseases and to identify possible risk factors for disease concomitance.
METHODS: A population-based review of all patients diagnosed with CD and microscopic colitis in a large Canadian centre over a 5-year period. Endoscopy and pathology databases were searched to identify all cases of CD and microscopic colitis diagnosed within the Calgary Health Region between 2004 and 200

BACKGROUND: Microscopic colitis (MC) and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBSD) have a similar clinical and endoscopic presentation. The prevalence of MC in Mexican patients with IBS-D is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To find out the prevalence of MC in patients with IBS-D and compare it with the one observed in patients with IBS with constipation (IBS-C).
METHODS: All patients with IBS (Rome III) seen consecutively from January 2008 to August 2010 were included. Those with organic disease, alarm signs, mixed IBS or unsubtyped- IBS (Rome III) were excluded. Colonoscopy with biopsies was perfor

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional bowel disorder. The frequency of microscopic colitis and focal active colitis in the colonic mucosa has been investigated in IBS patients.
METHODS: Between June 2007 and September 2010, 378 patients (between 16 and 84 years) were recruited prospectively. Of these 378 patients, 226 patients were diagnosed with IBS using the Rome III criteria. 152 control patients were also enrolled who were undergoing colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening or investigation of anemia. Histopathological abnormalities identified during colono

BACKGROUND: Microscopic colitis presents with chronic diarrhoea with or without abdominal pain. Microscopic colitis is an important cause of chronic diarrhoea. It can be distributed throughout the colon, as well as limited to the right colon. Microscopic colitis is associated with coeliac disease. We studied the prevalence and distribution of microscopic colitis in patients with diarrhoea and normal colonoscopy and we studied the association with coeliac disease.
METHODS: Colonoscopy was performed. Biopsies were taken from every segment of the colon. Lymphocytic colitis was defined as the pre

BACKGROUND: Microscopic colitis (MC) is presumably mediated by immune dysregulation, with drug exposure being a substantial risk factor. This study aims to identify contemporary MC-drug associations.
METHODS: A pharmacovigilance study of the FDA adverse event reporting system (FAERS) between July 2014 and June 2024. Disproportionate reporting of MC was assessed using reporting odds ratios (RORs), adjusted for age, sex, and concomitant medications.
RESULTS: Of 12,109,491 safety reports, 2648 cases of MC were identified and associated with 55 different medications. Several biologic immunosuppr

Microscopic colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the colon. Firstline treatment consists of budesonide, with the consideration of biological agents in refractory cases. Celiac disease is a chronic immune mediated and gluten-induced enteropathy, with treatment consisting of a gluten-free diet. There is an association between microscopic colitis and instead of xand celiac disease, especially in refractory cases they can coincide. In this manuscript, we report for the first time the efficacy of tofacitinib, a pan Janus kinase inhibitor, in the treatment of concomitant microscopic coliti

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to report on the incidence of microscopic colitis (MC), any possible relation with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), concomitant drug consumption, related diseases and the clinical course of the diseases.
METHODS: Both new cases of IBD and MC were registered at the same time in the same geographical area. The study started in the county of Uppsala 2005-2006, and other parts of the surrounding health region were included 2007-2009. Established morphological criteria were used, i.e. a layer of subepithelial collagen band ≥ 10 μm in collagenous colitis (CC) wi

The following study cinfirms previously reported electron-microscopic findings in ulcerative colitis and agrees with the nonspecific nature of those findings. The study extends these observations in regard to relationship of PMN leukocytes, eosinophil leukocytes, and mast cells to colonic epithelial cells. Strong, though not conclusive, data that PMN and eosinophil leukocytes extensively invade epithelial cells in ulcerative colitis is presented. This finding also is not specific to ulcerative colitis and was found with much less frequency in Crohn's disease of the colon and in salmonella coli

Electron microscopy of the colonic mucosa was performed in 33 patients with acute ulcerative colitis. The process of the development of crypt abscesses was studied. Inflammatory cells migrated intercellularly from the lamina propria and did not destruct the neighboring epithelial cells. Abnormal maturation of the epithelial cells was observed. Loose connection and separation of immature epithelial cells may promote migration of inflammatory cells.

PURPOSE: Patients with intestinal inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD), and microscopic colitis (MC) are excluded from clinical trials with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) because of concerns of exacerbating their underlying immune-mediated disease. This study evaluated the risk of developing disease activity or checkpoint inhibitor checkpoint inhibitor-mediated enterocolitis (IMC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a nationwide, retrospective cohort study in Denmark, analyzing patients with UC, CD, and MC diagnosed with cancer and treated with ICIs
