Low-grade NTRK-rearranged spindle cell neoplasm presenting as a colonic polyp and managed by polypectomy: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: NTRK-rearranged spindle cell neoplasms constitute a novel, heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms originally described predominantly in soft tissue locations. They are commonly characterized by co-expression of S100 and CD34 immunostains and presence of NTRK fusions. While exceedingly rare, there are increasing reports of this lesion involving the gastrointestinal tract, presenting predominantly as large masses of the stomach, small bowel and colorectum. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 37-year-old male who on colonoscopy was found to have a one cm polyp of the sigm

Seventeen primary malignant neoplasms involving the skin, ovary, esophagus, colon, oral cavity, and ear canal: a case report and review of the literature.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasm (MPMN) is a rare disease with two or more malignant neoplasms in one patient. In less than 0.1% of cancer patients, four or more occur. MPMN is frequently associated with hereditary cancer syndrome, although in rare cases, it is not. A female patient developed 17 MPMNs. Although they were successfully treated with surgery, radiation, and adjuvant chemotherapy, the patient died from the recurrence of ovarian cancer. To explore genetic susceptibility to MPMN, immunohistochemical analysis, microsatellite instability analysis, germ line exome sequencing, and uns

Value of pre-existent bacterial colonization in patients with advanced/relapsed ovarian neoplasms undergoing cytoreductive surgery: a multicenter observational study (BONSAI).

OBJECTIVE: As an increasing number of patients with advanced/relapsed ovarian cancer need extensive cytoreductive procedures, there is an increasing number of complex cases collected in accredited tertiary cancer centers. With nosocomial infections and bacterial colonizations being a significant challenge in these patient cohorts, we aimed to evaluate the risk such infections pose to surgical outcome. METHODS: Prospective assessment of pathological bacterial colonization (vaginal, umbilical/groin, intraperitoneal, urine, oral/nose cavity) in patients who underwent open cytoreductive surgery f

Synchronous Quadruple Primary Neoplasms: Colon Adenocarcinoma, Collision Tumor of Neuroendocrine Tumor and Schwann Cell Hamartoma and Sessile Serrated Adenoma of the Appendix.

Quadruple synchronous primary neoplasms are very rare with only three cases reported in the English-speaking literature to date. Collision tumors are also rare entities, especially of the appendix. We herein report a case of synchronous quadruple primary neoplasm in a 95-year-old female. She was diagnosed with colon adenocarcinoma, sessile serrated adenoma of the appendix and a collision tumor composed of a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor and Schwann cell hamartoma. Histological examination and immunohistochemistry supported these four lesions as separate entities. This case is unique

Nine primary malignant neoplasms-involving the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, prostate, and external ear canal-without microsatellite instability: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although cases of multiple primary malignant neoplasms are increasing, reports of more than three or four primary metachronous malignant neoplasms are extremely rare. Moreover, very few publications have provided a genetic mutational analysis or have evaluated risk factors associated with such neoplasms. We present an extremely rare case of nine primary malignant lesions in a man who was successfully treated. We also report on microsatellite stability status, analyze risk factors, and discuss the relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATION: Between 67 and 73 years of age, a male patien

Laparoscopic-facilitated endoscopic submucosal dissection, mucosal resection, and partial circumferential ("wedge") colon wall resection for benign colorectal neoplasms that come to surgery.

BACKGROUND: Large polyps that come to surgery are removed via colectomy (CR). Alternatives are MIS-facilitated endoscopic submucosal dissection/endoscopic mucosal resection (ESD/EMR) or wedge resection (WR). This study presents the results of 26 polyp patients who had minimally invasive surgery (MIS)-monitored ESD/EMR, WR, or if necessary, standard CR. METHODS: The authors used a retrospective review of 1 surgeon's experience. ESD/EMR was the first choice, WR was the second, and CR was the last resort. RESULTS: Polyp locations were as follows: right/transverse, 16 (62%); rectum, 7 (27%); and

A rare case report: low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) located under the left costal margin, the gastric level and the transverse colon.

We report a case with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, located under the left costal margin, the gastric level and the transverse colon. The mucinous appendiceal neoplasm has caused intussusception of the appendix in the cecum, completely dislocating the cecum on the left side of the upper abdomen. In such cases, it is important to diagnose prior to surgical treatment to avoid mucocele perforation and intraoperative dissemination. The patient underwent a right hemicolectomy procedure, completely removing the mass according to oncological principles. The atypical localization of the c

Autofluorescence Imaging Reflects the Nuclear Enlargement of Tumor Cells as well as the Cell Proliferation Ability and Aberrant Status of the p53, Ki-67, and p16 Genes in Colon Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Autofluorescence imaging (AFI) is useful for diagnosing colon neoplasms, but what affects the AFI intensity remains unclear. This study investigated the association between AFI and the histological characteristics, aberrant methylation status, and aberrant expression in colon neoplasms. METHODS: Fifty-three patients with colorectal neoplasms who underwent AFI were enrolled. The AFI intensity (F index) was compared with the pathological findings and gene alterations. The F index was calculated using an image analysis software program. The pathological findings were assessed by the

Clinical significance of diminutive polyps of the rectum and sigmoid colon.

A retrospective review of 637 consecutive colonoscopies with polypectomy in 526 patients was performed to determine the association of small polyps of the rectum and sigmoid colon with more proximal colonic neoplasms. All colonic polyps were proximal to the sigmoid colon in 117 procedures. Proximal neoplasms were found in 32 percent of patients with a single polyp in the rectum or sigmoid colon. The incidence increased to 83 percent for those with three or more polyps. The occurrence of proximal colonic neoplasms was not affected by the size or histologic type of the rectosigmoid polyps. These

Colonic lipomas an uncommon cause of intussusception in adult patients: report of three cases and literature review.

Colonic lipomas are infrequent, benign, non-epithelial, fatty neoplasms. Most of the colonic lipomas are asymptomatic, but around 25% of patients may develop symptoms. Nowadays, surgical resection of the involved segment is the treatment of choice. We report three cases of colonic intussusceptions caused by colonic lipomas in adult patients. The patients underwent surgical resection, and the diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of the specimens.

Streptococcus bovis septicemia and large bowel neoplasia.

Streptococcus bovis septicemia is a relatively uncommon entity that is associated with an increased incidence of colonic neoplasms. Three of four patients with S. bovis endocarditis subsequent to septicemia underwent colonoscopy. The fourth patient underwent a barium enema and a proctoscopic examination. Polyps were found in three patients, and adenocarcinoma of the colon in one. Patients with S. bovis endocarditis should be considered at high risk for colonic neoplasms. Screening colonoscopy is recommended for these patients, and follow-up colonoscopy may be warranted.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the colon with synchronous liver metastasis: a rare case report mimicking metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Primary colorectal lymphoma represents a rare minority among the colonic neoplasms. Early diagnosis is often difficult because of unspecific symptoms, with subsequent delays in diagnosis and management. We describe a rare case of colonic lymphoma presenting with synchronous liver metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old male with a 6-mo history of vague abdominal pain, constipation and melena was referred to our hospital. Computed tomography scan of abdomen revealed the presence of a mass along the proximal ascending colon. Colonoscopy biopsy showed external compression of the

Incidence trends and relative survival of colorectal neuroendocrine neoplasms: A population-based study using German cancer registry data.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the colon and rectum are a heterogeneous group of epithelial neoplasms with neuroendocrine differentiation. They include well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) and mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs). Our aim was to calculate incidence, incidence trends and relative survival for colonic and rectal NETs, NECs, and MiNENs. We analyzed data covering the entire German population recorded between 2009 and 2021, calculating age-standardized incidence rates, annual percent chang

Screening colonoscopy for the detection of neoplastic lesions in asymptomatic HIV-infected subjects.

BACKGROUND: Although non-AIDS defining malignancies are rapidly increasing as HIV-infected subjects live longer, little is know about the results of screening for colonic neoplasms (adenomatous polyps and adenocarcinomas) in this population. METHODS: We conducted a screening colonoscopy study to determine the prevalence of colonic neoplasms in 136 asymptomatic HIV-infected subjects >or=50 years of age and 272 asymptomatic uninfected control subjects matched for age, sex, and family history of colorectal cancer. Advanced neoplasms were defined as adenomas >or=10 mm or any adenoma, regardless o

Helicobacter pylori and colorectal neoplasms: a concise review.

Helicobacter pylori is the main etiological agent of all malignant tumors caused by an infectious disease. It is a major, at times dominant, factor in the pathogenesis of a large spectrum of diseases such as acute and chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric carcinoma, and lymphoma. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that H. pylori chronic infection may be related to different extragastric diseases, including colorectal neoplasms. This concise review aims to explore the association of H. pylori infection with colorectal cancer and adenoma, including the recent epid

Ovine intestinal adenocarcinomas: histologic and phenotypic comparison with human colon cancer.

Approximately 7% of old, unthrifty sheep (Ovis aries) in New Zealand have intestinal adenocarcinomas. To investigate whether these sheep might be used as a model of human colonic neoplasia, the biologic behavior and histologic appearance of ovine intestinal adenocarcinomas were compared with those reported for human colonic adenocarcinomas. We collected 50 intestinal tracts with grossly visible intestinal neoplasia from slaughtered sheep. Neoplasms were assessed using World Health Organization guidelines for assessment of human colonic adenocarcinomas. All ovine adenocarcinomas developed in th

Hyperplastic gastric polyposis, hypergastrinaemia and colorectal neoplasia: a description of four cases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous reports have suggested a possible association between hyperplastic polyposis and colorectal neoplasms. Increased gastrin may be the link between these two conditions insofar as gastrin has been reported to be a growth-promoting tumoural agent. This report describes gastric polyposis, hypergastrinaemia and colorectal neoplasms in four elderly patients. METHODS: Four male patients with no family history of cancer, who were found to have multiple gastric hyperplastic polyps, hypergastrinaemia and colorectal cancers or an adenomatous polyp, were evaluated. Acute aortic dissection caused by Clostridium septicum aortitis.

Clostridium septicum aortitis is a rare cause of aortic dissection. So far, only 28 cases have been described in literature before. Most of these cases occurred in elderly patients and an association to colonic neoplasms and/or atherosclerosis has been witnessed frequently. Here we report the case of a 32-year-old man with fatal aortic dissection due to aortic infection with C. septicum. Beside a case of a 22-year-old man who died of aortic dissection due to C. septicum aortitis this is the second case of C. septicum aortitis in a young individual with no signs of colonic neoplasms or atherosc
