PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of using computed tomographic (CT) colonography for preoperative examination of the proximal colon after metallic stent placement in patients with acute colon obstruction caused by colorectal cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained, and patient informed consent was waived. Fifty patients (mean age +/- standard deviation, 58.5 years +/- 11.7), who demonstrated no postprocedural complication after successful placement of self-expandable metallic stents to treat acute colon obstruction caused by cancer, underwent CT col

PURPOSE: To describe carpet lesions (laterally spreading tumors ≥ 3 cm) detected at computed tomographic (CT) colonography, including their clinical, imaging, and pathologic features.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The imaging reports for 9152 consecutive adults undergoing initial CT colonography at a tertiary center were reviewed in this HIPAA-compliant, institutional review board-approved retrospective study to identify all potential carpet lesions detected at CT colonography. Carpet lesions were defined as morphologically flat, laterally spreading tumors 3 cm or larger. For those patients with neo

Computed tomography colonography, also known as virtual colonoscopy, is a minimally invasive imaging technique developed in the early 1990s to evaluate the colon for polyps, cancer, and other abnormalities. Advances in multidetector computed tomography, bowel preparation protocols, and three-dimensional reconstruction rapidly improved diagnostic performance. Landmark trials demonstrating sensitivity for clinically significant adenomas comparable to optical colonoscopy led to its acceptance as a colorectal cancer screening option. Standardized reporting further accelerated clinical uptake. The

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Surgery-assisted CT colonography(CTC), a synthesis of CTC and vascular 3D-CT, is gaining recognition for its usefulness in colorectal cancer surgery. We report a laparoscopic right hemicolectomy after partial colectomy of the transverse colon in which sophisticated surgery-assisted CTC was useful.
PATIENT AND METHOD: The patient was a woman in 90s with ascending colon cancer, cT3N0M0, cStage Ⅱa. The patient had a history of open partial colectomy of the transverse colon for transverse colon cancer. Laterally spreading tumor(LST)was also present in the transverse colon.

BACKGROUND: Since 2003, a decline in the age-standardized incidence rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been observed in Germany. Nonetheless, one in eight cancer cases still affects the colon or rectum. The prognosis has improved, with the relative 5‑year survival rate for CRC being approximately 65%.
METHODS: This positive trend is probably a result of preventive measures introduced over the last 20 years. This could be further improved, however, as CRC can not only be detected early but in almost all cases also prevented through the identification of benign precursors. Less than half of a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: CT colonography (CTC) or barium enema are commonly ordered to complete colorectal imaging after an incomplete colonoscopy. We evaluated the sensitivity of radiographic studies performed for this purpose in clinical practice outside clinical trials.
METHODS: Adult patients referred to an expert endoscopist for incomplete colonoscopy because of a redundant colon or a difficult sigmoid and who underwent previous radiographic imaging between July 2001 and July 2019 were identified. None of the patients had a malignant obstruction as the cause of incomplete colonoscopy. Data o

CT colonography (CTC) is a robust and reliable imaging test of the colon. Accuracy for the detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) is as high as conventional colonoscopy (CC). Identification of polyp is size dependent, with large lesions (≥10mm) accurately detected and small lesions (6-9mm) identified with moderate to good sensitivity. Recent studies show good sensitivity for the identification of nonpolypoid (flat) lesions as well. Current CTC indications include the evaluation of patients who had undergone a previous incomplete CC or those who are unfit for CC (elderly and frail individuals, pa

The association of anisakiasis of the colon with colon cancer is rare and difficult to diagnose. Only one case of this type has been reported to date. In this study, we report a case of synchronous colon cancer and colonic anisakiasis. A 50-year-old woman was admitted for abdominal pain, and a volume-rendered surface-shaded image of CT colonography (CTC) revealed a concentric narrowing in the sigmoid colon and a segmental fold thickening in the ascending colon. A total colectomy was performed and the diagnosis of synchronous sigmoid colon cancer and anisakiasis of the ascending colon was confi

Gardner's syndrome is characterised by polyposis coli associated with multiple hard and soft tissue tumours including osteoma and odontoma. The major significance of the condition lies in the gastrointestinal polyposis which usually undergoes malignant change by the fourth decade. Extra-intestinal components may be apparent before those in the bowel, and their early detection may lead to appropriate evaluation and life saving treatment. A case is reported to demonstrate how important it is for general dental practitioners to be aware of the clinical and radiological characteristics of Gardner'

BACKGROUND: Virtual colonography is a powerful new method of imaging the entire colon and is useful to assess polyps and diagnose colon cancer. We evaluated virtual colonography in the postoperative screening of patients who had colon cancer.
METHODS: Fifty-three patients were examined with virtual colonography 12 to 48 months postoperatively. Forty-four patients had received segmental colectomy with restoration of the gastrointestinal tract, and nine patients underwent abdominoperineal resection and permanent colostomy. After proper cleaning of the colon and distention with air, spiral compu

The current status of three gastrointestinal imaging techniques-positron emission tomography (PET) with 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), computed tomographic (CT) colonography, and magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC)--are reviewed here. FDG-PET should not be used as an initial means to identify patients with primary colorectal malignancy; for the detection of colorectal carcinoma metastases and recurrence, contrast-enhanced CT should be used to monitor patients, with the use of PET reserved for equivocal cases. CT colonography is comparable to colonoscopy for the detection of patients with

In the last decade, computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) colonography, two new cross-sectional techniques for imaging of the colon, emerged. Both techniques show promising initial results in the detection of polyps equal to or greater than 1 cm in diameter in symptomatic patients. Imaging protocols are still mostly under development and prone to change. Both CT and MR colonography generate a large number of source images, which have to be read carefully for filling defects and, if intravenous contrast material is used, enhancing lesions. An important postprocessing technique i

AIM: The splenic flexure has variable vascular anatomy, and the details of the venous forms are not known. In this study, we report the flow pattern of the splenic flexure vein (SFV) and the positional relationship between the SFV and arteries such as the accessory middle colic artery (AMCA).
METHODS: This was a single-centre study using preoperative enhanced CT colonography images of 600 colorectal surgery patients. CT images were reconstructed into 3D angiography. SFV was defined as a vein flowing centrally from the marginal vein of the splenic flexure visible on CT. AMCA was defined as the

CT colonography is a promising technique that provides both multiplanar and endoluminal perspective of the air-filled, distended, cleaned colon. "Virtual colonoscopy" refers to computer-simulated 3D endoscopic visualization of the colonic mucosal surface. Unlike barium enema and conventional colonoscopy, CT colonography can give cross- sectional and endoluminal images of the colon and enables to image extracolic abnormality. CT colonography offers potential advantages over colonoscopy in that it causes little discomfort to the patient, and does not need sedation. It is more accurate in spatial

CT colonography (CTC) is a CT examination performed with low radiation dose and typically without IV contrast material, optimized to detect colorectal polyps and cancer. Despite extensive supporting data, CTC has had variable acceptance and use over the past 2 decades, particularly for a main indication of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. CTC is now at an inflection point after the approval in 2025 by CMS for reimbursement of CTC performed for CRC screening. Widespread use of CTC for CRC screening could help increase screening adherence rates and prevent cancer incidence. Nonetheless, radiol

OBJECTIVES: Intestinal malrotation is largely a pediatric diagnosis, but initial detection can be made in adulthood. CT colonography (CTC) provides an ideal means for estimating prevalence. Our purpose was to evaluate the prevalence and imaging findings of intestinal malrotation in asymptomatic adults at CTC screening, as well as incomplete optical colonoscopy (OC) referral.
METHODS: The CTC database of a single academic institution was searched for cases of intestinal malrotation (developmental nonrotation). Prevalence was estimated from 11,176 adults undergoing CTC. Demographic, clinical, i

A 66‒year‒old man was admitted to our hospital because of anemia and a positive fecal occult blood test in the medical examination. Colonoscopy revealed a type 2 advanced sigmoid colon cancer with circular stenosis. Computed tomography (CT)colonography was performed to examine the oral colon. The apple core signs were found both in the sigmoid and transverse colon. We diagnosed a double colon cancer and performed a laparoscopic left hemicolectomy and sigmoidectomy. The tumor was histopathologically diagnosed as a multiple cancer including a transverse and a sigmoid colon cancer. Although evalu

A 39-year-old female presented to our hospital with diarrhea, vomiting, anemia, and hypoalbuminemia. Virtual enteroscopy was performed to evaluate the small bowel; we found annular stenoses at 89, 100, 116, 147, and 154 cm from the ligament of Treitz. Small bowel resection was performed, and annular ulcers were confirmed at 58, 71, 90, 130, 138, 218, and 225 cm from the ligament of Treitz. Clinical records and pathological examination failed to determine the cause of these ulcers, and we diagnosed chronic multiple ulcers of the small intestine. Thus, we believe that virtual enteroscopy can be

Owing to encouraging results achieved in the clinical practice, CT colonography (CTC) is being increasingly employed for the examination of the whole colon and rectum and is quickly becoming a widely accepted diagnostic technique that is replacing double contrast barium enema and appears a promising tool for colorectal cancer screening as well. The increasing number of symptomatic and asymptomatic patients undergoing CTC for both evaluation of symptoms and colorectal cancer screening, along with the growing availability of CTC facilities in most healthcare departments and imaging centres, requ
