Six new cell lines were established in continuous culture from embryonic tissues of ixodid ticks. Four were from Dermacentor variabilis and two from D. parumapertus. The cells are mostly fibroblastic and diploid. Mosquito-borne viruses (Chikungunya, O'nyong, yellow fever, and St. Louis encephalitis) as well as tick-borne ones (Langat, Powassan, Colorado tick fever, Kemerovo, and Sawgrass) replicated in certain of these cell lines, but a nonvector-borne flavivirus, Modoc, did not. An underscribed virus from D. occidentalis ticks, which could not be isolated in Vero cells or newborn mice, was re

Identification of foci of vector-borne diseases does not require knowledge of exact abundances of vectors and pathogens; rather, a focus is defined by the presence, or some minimal level of abundance, of a vector and pathogen. Stepwise discriminant analysis (DA) was applied to data on free-ranging adult wood ticks (the vector) and to data on isolations of Colorado tick fever virus from small mammals. Trap stations were grouped on the basis of relative abundance of wood ticks for one set of analyses and on the presence or absence of virus for another set of analyses. Additional data consisted o

Tick-borne infectious diseases can affect many tissues and organs including bone, one of the most multifunctional structures in the human body. There is a scarcity of data regarding the impact of tick-borne pathogens on bone. The aim of this review was to survey existing research literature on this topic. The search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar search engines. From our search, we were able to find evidence of eight tick-borne diseases (Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, Lyme disease, Bourbon virus disease, Colorado tick fever disease, Tick-borne encephalitis, and Crimean-

Tick-borne diseases in the United States include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, babesiosis, Colorado tick fever, and relapsing fever. It is important for family physicians to consider these illnesses when patients present with influenza-like symptoms. A petechial rash initially affecting the palms and soles of the feet is associated with Rocky Mountain spotted fever, whereas erythema migrans (annular macule with central clearing) is associated with Lyme disease. Various other rashes or skin lesions accompanied by fever and influenza-like illness also may s

Ticks are obligatory hematophagous arthropods that harbor and transmit infectious pathogens to humans and animals. Tick species belonging to Amblyomma, Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Hyalomma genera may transmit certain viruses such as Bourbon virus (BRBV), Dhori virus (DHOV), Powassan virus (POWV), Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV), Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), Heartland virus (HRTV), Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV), etc. that affect humans and certain wildlife. The tick vectors may become infected through feeding on viraemic hosts before t

Ticks act as vectors and hosts of numerous arboviruses. Examples of medically important arboviruses include the tick-borne encephalitis virus, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever, and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. Recently, some novel arboviruses have been identified in blood specimens of patients with unexplained fever and a history of tick bites in Inner Mongolia. Consequently, tick-borne viruses are a major focus of infectious disease research. However, the spectrum of tick-borne viruses in subtropical areas of China has yet to be sufficiently characterized. In this study, we col

INTRODUCTION: Tick-borne relapsing fever is a zoonotic infection caused by members of the Borrelia genus of spirochetes found predominantly in the southwestern United States.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old woman presented to a Wisconsin emergency department with a 2-day history of fevers and altered mental status after returning from a 5-week stay in Colorado. Initial labs were notable for elevated transaminases, thrombocytopenia, mild hyponatremia, mild hypokalemia, and elevated procalcitonin.
DISCUSSION: Rapid identification of patients with tick-borne relapsing fever is essential to min

Ticks are prominent hosts for many viruses that are pathogenic to humans on almost every continent. Despite the documented historical association of ticks with viral disease in humans, clinical case reports are low, likely due to under-recognition of these pathogens. A key feature of understanding tick-borne virus transmission to humans lies in the natural invertebrate and vertebrate hosts supporting ecological maintenance. As humans are often infected as incidental hosts during the tick-virus life cycle, determining relevant ticks and mammals involved in maintenance can inform prevention stra

The authors have presented evidence through work done 25-30 years ago for the rickettsial etiology of Bullis fever, a forgotten epidemic which occurred with over a 1,000 cases among World War II troops in training at Camp Bullis, Texas. Rickettsiae were recovered from blood and lymph nodes of patients and from ticks, Amblyomma americanum, collected in the area. All patients gave a history of tick-bites. The human and tick strains of rickettsiae, carried in chick embryo culture and in animal passage, were found to produce the characteristic syndrome of Bullis fever in human volunteers inoculate

The arthropod-borne rickettsial, borrelial, and bacterial diseases of North America are a diverse group of disorders that produce a wide variety of cutaneous abnormalities. These dermatologic abnormalities are often valuable clinical clues that may reveal or suggest the correct diagnosis to the astute clinician. We review the usual and unusual dermatologic manifestations of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, murine and sylvatic typhus, rickettsialpox, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, tick-borne relapsing fever, Colorado tick fever, and tularemia. In some of these diseases, skin manifestations may be dia

OBJECTIVES: Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative granulomatous infection caused by the Actinomyces genus. Orocervicofacial actinomycosis is the most common form of the disease, seen in up to 55% of cases. All forms of actinomycosis are treated with high doses of intravenous penicillin G over two to six weeks, followed by oral penicillin V. Large studies on cervicofacial actinomycosis are lacking. Therefore proper guidelines for treatment and treatment duration are difficult to establish. The aim of this study is to establish effective treatment and treatment duration for orocervicofacial act

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases are an important cause of human morbidity and mortality in the United States. The past several decades have witnessed an increase in both the number of recognized tick-borne pathogens and the number of tick-borne disease cases, whereas tick surveys have revealed substantial geographic expansions of tick populations throughout the country. Multiple laboratory testing options exist for diagnosis of tick-borne diseases, including serology, microscopy, and molecular-based methods. The preferred approach varies by the specific disease, locally available test options,

Arthropod-borne diseases are a major problem whenever outdoor activities bring arthropods and people into contact. The arthropods discussed here include arachnids (ticks) and insects. Most arthropod bites and stings are minor, with the notable exception being bee-sting anaphylaxis. Ticks cause the most disease transmission. Key hard tick vectors include black-legged (Ixodes), dog (Dermacentor), and lone star (Amblyomma) ticks, which transmit Lyme and various rickettsial diseases. Insect repellents, permethrin sprays, and proper tick inspection reduce this risk significantly. Lyme disease and t

Ticks rank high among arthropod vectors in terms of numbers of infectious agents that they transmit to humans, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, human monocytic ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Increasing temperature is suspected to affect tick biting rates and pathogen developmental rates, thereby potentially increasing risk for disease incidence. Tick distributions respond to climate change, but how their geographic ranges will shift in future decades and how those shifts may translate into changes in disease incidence rem

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Tick-borne diseases are increasing in incidence and geographic distribution. Several diseases endemic to the United States have ophthalmic manifestations, including the most common tick-borne disease, Lyme borreliosis. As ocular complaints may lead a patient to seek medical evaluation, it is important to be aware of the systemic and ophthalmic manifestations of tick-borne diseases in order to make the correct diagnosis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Vision-threatening ophthalmic manifestations are relatively common in Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ocular involvement is

Tickborne diseases that affect patients in the United States include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, and tickborne relapsing fever. Tickborne diseases are increasing in incidence and should be suspected in patients presenting with flulike symptoms during the spring and summer months. Prompt diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and death. Location of exposure, identification of the specific tick vector, and evaluation of rash, if present, help identify the specific disease. Lyme disease prese

Understanding the microbiome of ticks in Australia is of considerable interest given the ongoing debate over whether Lyme disease and its causative agent, the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferisensu lato, are present in Australia. The diversity of bacteria infecting Australian ticks has been studied using both culture- and metagenomics-based techniques. However, little is known about the virome of Australian ticks, including whether this includes viruses with the potential to infect mammals. We used a meta-transcriptomics approach to reveal the diversity and evolution of viruses from Australian ti
