INTRODUCTION: Though colostomy is one of the frequently performed procedures, information from Ethiopia is lacking concerning its most frequent indications, types and the complications seen after its formation.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 155 patients operated at Tikur Anbessa (TAH) and the Saint Paul's Hospital (SPH) over a three year period (2004-2007 E.C).
RESULTS: 155 patients were included in the analysis, their male to female ratio being 2.9:1. Non-traumatic disease conditions accounted for 124 (80%) patients. The most frequent disease conditions that necessitated the formatio

A new technique for the restoration of the continuity of the colon with preservation of an existing colostomy is described here. A 75-year-old male with a three-year history of abdominal-perineal resection and a well functioning end colostomy was admitted to our department for a second primary cancer of the descending colon. At operation the colon was divided close to the abdominal wall; the colostomy was left in situ while the descending colon and mesocolon were radically resected. The viability of the colostomy was being continuously inspected. An EEA stapler was then inserted through the co

PURPOSE: Pemphigoid is a well-recognized cutaneous lesion, occurring rarely in peristomal skin. We report the diagnosis and successful treatment of localized pemphigoid lesions adjacent to a colostomy.
METHODS: We review the chart, immunofluorescence study, treatment, and follow-up of a patient with bullous lesions at a colostomy site.
RESULT: Pemphigoid of the pericolostomy skin was diagnosed by immunofluorescence study and successfully treated with antibiotic.
CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a bullous lesion adjacent to a c

The author analyses the results of various methods of terminal colostomy, among which are the "column" technique, with stitching of the edges of the peritoneum to the skin and leaving the excess of the brought out intestine in 258 patients, the formation of a flat stoma by the ordinary method in 179 patients, and with retroperitoneal passing of the intestine in 752 patients in radical surgical treatment of rectal carcinoma and other diseases of the large intestine. The operations were conducted in the period from 1973 to 1987. The frequency of early paracolostomy complications (suppuration, re

We reviewed our experience with colostomy performed in 20 spinal cord injury (SCI) patients to determine the effectiveness and safety of colostomy when it is performed for a late complication of SCI. Objective evaluation of gastrointestinal function, ie, colonic transit time and anorectal manometry, was performed in six patients with chronic gastrointestinal complaints to identify the site and severity of bowel dysfunction. Twelve patients had colostomy performed for chronic gastrointestinal problems, seven as an adjunct in the treatment of perineal pressure ulcers, and one for rectal cancer.

One hundred consecutive patients with injuries to the extraperitoneal rectum were treated over a ten-year period at an urban trauma center. The mechanisms of injury included firearms in 82 patients, stab wounds in 3 patients, a variety of other penetrating injuries in 10 patients, and in 5 patients the injuries resulted from blunt trauma. Treatment of the rectal injury was determined by the bias of the operating surgeon, the condition of the patient, and the magnitude of the rectal injury. Proximal loop colostomies were performed in 44 patients, diverting colostomies in 51 patients, Hartmann's

The majority of patients with ileostomy adapt to their new situation and are able to live a nearly normal professional and social life. This does not mean that there is not a need for improvement in the ileostomy construction. It merely proves the great adaptive mechanism in man. In spite of the improvement in surgical techniques in the construction of the ileostomy and the development of modern ileostomy appliances, a proportion of the patients still experiences serious problems. In order to improve the situation for patients with ileostomy a new type of ileostomy has been developed. From the

INTRODUCTION: Anorectal malformations (ARM) are complex disorders that often require staged reconstructions. We present a case and imaging findings of a child who developed issues following colostomy closure due to segmental colonic ischemia. Case Presentation. A 3-year-old female with Currarino syndrome presented with abdominal distention, blood-flecked stools, and prolonged cecostomy flush time. For her anorectal malformation, a colostomy was initially placed. A new colostomy was created at posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) to allow the distal rectum to reach the anus without tension

A 68-year-old male nursing home resident presented following dislodgement of a percutaneous endoscopic colostomy (PEC) tube originally sited to prevent recurrent sigmoid volvulus. Computed tomography demonstrated tube migration into the lumen of the recto-sigmoid junction, where it remained for 12 days before passing spontaneously. During this period, the patient remained asymptomatic; the residual colocutaneous fistula functioned as a decompressive valve. Originally, the patient was due to be discharged with early flexible sigmoidoscopy follow-up. However, complex social issues delayed discha

We report a case of advanced colon cancer after closure of a colostomy. A 77-year-old man suddenly began experiencing abdominal pain and pan-peritonitis due to perforate diverticulum of the sigmoid colon. A Hartmann operation was urgently performed, and closure of the colostomy was performed 6 months later. The patient had no history of colonoscopy. Colonoscopy was performed 45 months after the closure of the colostomy to examine the colon. Advanced colon cancer was detected near the anastomotic region. In conclusion, older patients, including those with numerous disease complications such as

PURPOSE: Double-barreled wet colostomy represents simultaneous urinary and fecal surgical diversion performed most commonly after pelvic exenteration as a palliative procedure or after actinic damage. We report the structural and functional results of double-barreled wet colostomy with special attention to surgical technique, morbidity and functional results compared to those described in the available literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively followed 38 patients who underwent double-barreled wet colostomy at our institution from April 2003 to November 2007. The parameters were p

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and type of complications presented in the patients with ARM treated with a colostomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients data with diagnostic of ARM and colostomy beetween 1994 and 2005 were revised.
RESULTS: The colostomy was carried out in other centers in 185 patients (75.2%) and in our institution in 61 (24.8%). Two hundred eleven (85.8%) had a sigmoid colostomy. Only 124 patients had a diverting colostomy. Sigmoid colon was erroneously used as transverse in 2 cases. The space among the ostomies was very scarce in 10 and excessive in 5. The colostomy

We encountered a baby who was diagnosed with anal atresia, interruption of aortic arch (type B), aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, single atrium, large ventricular septal defects, aberrant origin right subclavian artery. We operated on him using the Norwood procedure after a colostomy. Aortic arch was reconstructed by interposing with an 8 mm graft and the right ventricular-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) conduit was chosen for pulmonary flow. We closed the sternum 6 days after the Norwood procedure. We extubated him 16 days after delayed sternal closure. There was no trouble with his stoma and no si

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to characterize the type and incidence of complications related to colostomy formation in newborn infants with anorectal anomalies.
METHODS: The authors reviewed a 5-year (1994 to 1999) experience of a single institution in the management of neonates with high and intermediate anorectal anomalies who required colostomy at birth. Patients with colostomy still in place have been excluded from the study to maximize the chances of detecting colostomy-related complications.
RESULTS: There were 80 neonates with anorectal malformations, of whom, 49 (31 boys and 18

BACKGROUND: Colostomy irrigation is a useful method of achieving faecal continence in selected conditions, but remains largely underutilized because it is time consuming. This study investigated the effect of modifying irrigation technique (route, infusion regimen and pharmacological manipulation) on colonic emptying time in a porcine model.
METHODS: An end-colostomy and caecostomy were fashioned in six pigs. Twenty markers were introduced into the caecum immediately before colonic irrigation. Irrigation route (antegrade or retrograde), infusion regimen (tap water, polyethylene glycol (PEG),
