Urinary Trace Element Concentrations in Congolese Patients With Prostate Cancer: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers among men and a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), PCa represents an important public health challenge, with limited data available on environmental factors that may be associated with disease occurrence. Recent evidence suggests that trace element exposure may influence prostate carcinogenesis. This study aimed to compare urinary trace element concentrations between PCa patients and age-matched controls in the DRC. METHODOLOGY: This case-control analytical stud

Same same, but different: exploring the enigmatic role of the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) in invertebrate physiology.

Evidence has been accumulating that elements of the vertebrate pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) system are missing in non-chordate genomes, which is at odds with the partial sequence-, immunohistochemical-, and physiological data in the literature. Multilevel experiments were performed on the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) to explore the role of PACAP in invertebrates. Screening of neuronal transcriptome and genome data did not reveal homologs to the elements of vertebrate PACAP system. Despite this, immunohistochemical investigations with an anti-human PAC1 rec

Quantified retrospective biomonitoring of fetal and infant elemental exposure using LA-ICP-MS analysis of deciduous dentin in three contrasting human cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Spatial elemental analysis of deciduous tooth dentin combined with odontochronological estimates can provide an early life (in utero to ~2 years of age) history of inorganic element exposure and status. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the importance of data normalization to a certified reference material to enable between-study comparisons, using populations with assumed contrasting elemental exposures. METHODS: We used laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) of dentin to derive a history of elemental composition from three distinct cohort studies: a pre

Toxic metals and trace elements in maternal blood and urinary tract infection during the first 2 years of life: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections in young children and can lead to long-term renal complications. While established risk factors exist, the effect of prenatal exposure to toxic metals and trace elements on UTI risk remains unclear. We examined the association between maternal blood levels of these elements and UTI risk in early childhood. METHODS: This study is based on a nationwide birth cohort, the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), which obtained data from over 100,000 pregnancies through 15 Regional Centres across Japan. Maternal bloo

Gene expression profiling and functional analysis of ventricular tissues from murine transverse aortic constriction.

BACKGROUND: Transverse aortic constriction (TAC) model is widely used to study pressure overload-induced cardiac remodeling. However, the conserved transcriptional features of TAC model and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: In this study, we screened out the high-quality microarray data for ventricular tissue from murine TAC model. The transcriptional changes in ventricular tissue were analyzed by identifying the common differently expressed genes (DEGs) and enriched gene sets. We also analyzed the protein-protein interaction and mRNA-mRNA association of DEGs. Furt

Characterisation of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus from Alexandria, Egypt.

The present study aims to characterise clinical MRSA isolates from a tertiary care centre in Egypt's second-largest city, Alexandria. Thirty isolates collected in 2020 were genotypically characterised by microarray to detect their resistance and virulence genes and assign them to clonal complexes (CC) and strains. Isolates belonged to 11 different CCs and 14 different strains. CC15-MRSA-[V+fus] (n = 6), CC1-MRSA-[V+fus+tir+ccrA/B-1] (PVL+) (n = 5) as well as CC1-MRSA-[V+fus+tir+ccrA/B-1] and CC1153-MRSA-[V+fus] (PVL+) (both with n = 3) were the most common strains. Most isolates (83%) harboure

The Microenvironment's Role in Mycosis Fungoides and Sézary Syndrome: From Progression to Therapeutic Implications.

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sezary Syndrome (SS) are the most common cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. It has been hypothesized that the interaction between the immune system, cutaneous cells, and neoplastic elements may play a role in MF/SS pathogenesis and progression. METHODS: This paper aims to revise in a narrative way our current knowledge of the microenvironment's role in MF/SS. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Literature data support a possible implication of microenvironment cells in MF/SS pathogenesis and progression, opening up new therapeutic avenues.

DDE mercury, and selenium in Biota, sediments, and water of the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo Basin, 1965-1995.

An assessment of contaminant stressors on biota of the Rio Grande was conducted to identify relevant contaminant issues, assess exposure and ecological effects, identify data gaps, and determine potential risks. Most contaminant data were from studies conducted during 1965-1995 in the Lower Rio Grande, on the Texas side of the river, within a 100-km boundary from Falcon Dam to the mouth. Contaminants most frequently reported were organochlorine compounds (OCs) and trace elements. The number of records for OCs and trace elements was at least twofold greater for fish than for birds, mammals, or

Reprogramming of the FOXA1 cistrome in treatment-emergent neuroendocrine prostate cancer.

Lineage plasticity, the ability of a cell to alter its identity, is an increasingly common mechanism of adaptive resistance to targeted therapy in cancer. An archetypal example is the development of neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) after treatment of prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD) with inhibitors of androgen signaling. NEPC is an aggressive variant of prostate cancer that aberrantly expresses genes characteristic of neuroendocrine (NE) tissues and no longer depends on androgens. Here, we investigate the epigenomic basis of this resistance mechanism by profiling histone modifications in NE

Human factors in aircraft incidents: results of a 7-year study.

Human error causes or contributes to considerably over half of all aviation mishaps. This report describes a 7-year study of aircraft incident data conducted in an attempt to further our understanding of the phenomenon of human error. The study of incidents as a surrogate for aircraft accidents is relevant only if incidents constitute a population or universe of which accidents are a subset. This assumption has been examined in a study of over 35,000 reports of aviation incidents collected from 1976-83 by the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System. One-third of the reports involve conflicts amo

Specific hypermethylation of LINE-1 elements during abnormal overgrowth and differentiation of human placenta.

In human post-natal somatic cells, low global levels of DNA methylation have been associated with the hypomethylation of several repetitive elements, a feature that has been proposed to be a surrogate epigenetic marker. These data, mainly derived from the analysis of cancer cells, suggest a potential association between loss of cell-growth control and altered differentiation with hypomethylation of repetitive sequences. Partial hydatidiform moles (PHMs) can be used as an alternative model for investigating this association in a non-tumorigenic context. This gestational disease is characterized

T-cell receptor delta gene recombination in common acute lymphoblastic leukemia: preferential usage of V delta 2 and frequent involvement of the J alpha cluster.

A high frequency (greater than 80%) of acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL) exhibit a recombination of the T-cell receptor (TCR) delta chain locus. Interestingly, distinct TCR delta elements are preferentially used in immunologic subtypes. In a recent series of 201 children with common ALL (cALL) we observed a TCR delta rearrangement in 162 patients, 57% of the latter showing a hybridization pattern in Southern blots suggestive of a V delta 2 to D delta 3 recombination. To verify this interpretation and to elucidate in more detail the diversity of this common type of TCR delta recombination we
