Retrospective study of etiologic agents associated with nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis in stranded cetaceans in the canary islands.

Nineteen natural cases of etiologically undetermined encephalitides in free-ranging cetaceans were studied retrospectively. Histological examination of the brains revealed variable degrees of nonsuppurative encephalitis or meningoencephalitis, characterized predominantly by perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltrates. A PCR assay was used on brain and other available tissues to detect the presence of morbillivirus, herpesvirus, West Nile virus, Toxoplasma gondii, and Brucella spp. In addition, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed on selected tissues to determine the presence of morb

Causes of mortality and parasites and incidental lesions in dolphins and whales from British waters.

Detailed post mortem examinations were carried out on 18 dolphins and whales found dead on the coast of the United Kingdom. The commonest causes of death were pneumonia and entanglement in fishing gear. Of the non-fatal conditions, parasitoses of various organs were common and there was a wide variety of other conditions. In total 124 diseases and other lesions were found, giving an average of 6.9 conditions per animal.

Microcystic meningioma in a dolphin (Delphinus delphis): immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study.

A wild common dolphin was found stranded on the French Atlantic coast. At necropsy, an intracranial grey- to tan-coloured mass (7 x 5 x 4 cm) was found at the right cerebellopontine angle, compressing the right cerebellar hemisphere, the brainstem and the occipital lobe of the right cerebral hemisphere. Microscopically, the tumour was composed of small lobules of polygonal to elongated neoplastic cells with multifocal areas of stellate and vacuolated cells. Neoplastic cells strongly expressed vimentin, S-100 protein and neuron-specific enolase. They were rarely positive for cytokeratin. Ultras

Traumatic injuries by grey seals on delphinids from northwest European waters.

Grey seal Halichoerus grypus populations are increasing across the North Atlantic, where occasional reports describe attacks, predation on other marine mammals and even cannibalism of their own young. Here we report injuries potentially consistent with grey seal-inflicted lesions on 4 delphinids from northwest European coastlines: 1 bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus, 1 common dolphin Delphinus delphis and 2 white-beaked dolphins Lagenorhynchus albirostris. These delphinids exhibited injuries such as puncture wounds and parallel scratches, with varying degrees of tissue remodelling. This in

Case Report: Shark bite resulting in a urethral obstruction and urinary tract-body wall fistula in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in Sarasota Bay, Florida.

A juvenile male common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was examined as part of a long-term dolphin research and monitoring program in Sarasota Bay, Florida. Scars consistent with a shark bite, identified as a possible tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), were observed at the proximal ventral peduncle bilaterally, involving the area at the distal genital slit. A left ventrolateral urinary tract-body wall fistula was identified at the cranial margin of the healed shark bite scar. The area was closely associated with palpable scar tissue at the base of the penis within the genital slit. Physi

An epigenetic DNA methylation clock for age estimates in Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus).

Knowledge of an animal's chronological age is crucial for understanding and predicting population demographics, survival and reproduction, but accurate age determination for many wild animals remains challenging. Previous methods to estimate age require invasive procedures, such as tooth extraction to analyse growth layers, which are difficult to carry out with large, mobile animals such as cetaceans. However, recent advances in epigenetic methods have opened new avenues for precise age determination. These 'epigenetic clocks' present a less invasive alternative and can provide age estimates w

Partial alpha-tubulin gene amplification by nested PCR as a tool for Paracoccidioides ceti identification.

Paracoccidioidomycosis ceti (PCMC), also called lobomycosis, is a cutaneous disease affecting cetaceans worldwide. It is caused by Paracoccidioides ceti, an uncultivable fungal species recently classified within the Paracoccidioides genus. Although several molecular markers have been used to investigate the PCMC pathogen, the alpha-tubulin gene (TUB1), commonly utilized in genetic studies of cultivable Paracoccidioides, has remained unexplored in this taxon. In this study, we applied a nested polymerase chain reaction targeting TUB1 to amplify fungal sequences from two new cases of PCMC in Bra

Meningeal Lymphatic and Glymphatic Structures in a Pelagic Delphinid (Delphinus delphis).

The glymphatic system, an analog of the peripheral lymphatic system in the brain, and the meningeal lymphatic system are critical to central nervous system health. The glymphatic system functions to distribute cerebrospinal fluid and important compounds throughout the brain and to remove metabolic waste. The flow of cerebrospinal fluid through this system is affected by changes in cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure, and vascular tone. Cetaceans experience profound cardiorespiratory alterations while diving that can directly affect cerebrospinal fluid and blood flow and, thus, glymphati

The Caprera Canyon (north-eastern Sardinia): A hotspot of cetacean diversity in the western Mediterranean Sea.

The Caprera Canyon, a submarine canyon system off Sardinia in the western Mediterranean, was thought to be an important cetacean habitat, though studies on the area remained limited. To address this knowledge gap, 216 boat-based surveys were conducted between 2011 and 2019, covering 8443 km, using both research and whale-watching vessels. The distribution, diversity, relative abundance (Encounter Rate - ER), and habitat use of cetaceans were described, along with relevant behavioural and ecological observations. A total of 8 species were reported across 810 sightings, encompassing 7 out of the

The use of a shotgun for euthanasia of stranded cetaceans.

A 12-gauge shotgun, loaded with either a solid 28 g lead slug or buckshot consisting of nine individual lead pellets with a total mass of 28 g, was used to shoot the heads of one dead common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and five dead long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) varying in length from 2.5 m to 5 m. The dolphin and the smallest pilot whale were shot with both projectiles from the dorsal surface of the head. The projectiles penetrated the head and dorsal surface of the skull, but not the base of the cranium. This site using buckshot was not effective in the larger animals. Two

Liver Lesions in Estuarine Dolphins in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida: Does Microcystin Play a Role?

Microcystin (MC), a hepatotoxin produced by cyanobacteria, was introduced into the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida, in 2005 through freshwater outflows. Since then, MC has been detected in humans, domestic animals, and wildlife in the lagoon. Potential public health effects associated with MC exposure along the IRL include an increased risk of non-alcoholic liver disease among area residents. Yet, there are limited studies characterizing liver disease, as well as the potential role of MC, in humans and animals in this region. Thus, histopathology reports (n = 133) were reviewed in the stran

Broad permissiveness of mammalian nectin-4 orthologs for morbilliviruses: a notable exception in dolphin nectin-4.

Morbilliviruses utilize signalling lymphocytic activation molecule (SLAM) and nectin-4 as their major cellular receptors and exhibit distinct host specificities despite sharing common receptor usage. While species-specific differences in SLAM have been extensively investigated, the contribution of nectin-4 to morbillivirus host range remains poorly understood because nectin-4 is highly conserved among mammals. Here, we systematically compared the receptor activities of nectin-4 orthologs from human, dolphin, bat, dog and seal for representative morbilliviruses, including measles virus (MV), ce

Comparison of two imaging programs in predicting the soft tissue changes with mandibular advancement surgery.

Establishing common objectives and expectations concerning the outcome of proposed surgical orthodontic therapy is a crucial part of the treatment planning process, which has been greatly simplified by imaging software. The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of two surgical imaging programs--Dolphin Imaging 10 and Vistadent OC--in simulating the actual outcome of mandibular advancement surgery by using a visual analog scale (VAS) judged by a panel of orthodontists, oral surgeons, and laypersons. The predictions were also analyzed with soft tissue cephalometric evaluation.

Phylogenomic analysis of the complete sequence of a gastroenteritis-associated cetacean adenovirus (bottlenose dolphin adenovirus 1) reveals a high degree of genetic divergence.

Adenoviruses are common pathogens in vertebrates, infecting a wide range of hosts, but only having rarely been detected and correlated with disease in cetaceans. This article describes the first complete genomic sequence of a cetacean adenovirus, bottlenose dolphin adenovirus 1 (BdAdV-1), detected in captive bottlenose dolphin population (Tursiops truncatus) suffering from self-limiting gastroenteritis. The complete genome sequence of BdAdV-1 was recovered from data generated by high-throughput sequencing and validated by Sanger sequencing. The genome is 34,080bp long and has 220 nucleotides l

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in a bottlenose dolphin: case report and literature review.

A 15-y-old captive-born female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) had slowly progressive lethargy, inappetence, and pallor of the oral mucosa. Serial hemograms and serum biochemistry analysis revealed hemolyzed plasma, gradually severe anemia with reticulocytosis, spherocytosis, pronounced neutrophilia with left shift and toxic change, and indirect hyperbilirubinemia. Urinalysis identified both hemoglobinuria and bilirubinuria. Hyperglobulinemia with polyclonal gammopathy was evident by protein electrophoresis, and the saline agglutination test was positive. Erysipelas with preferential brain and skin involvement in a Mediterranean bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus.

Infections by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae occur in domestic animals and cause the disease known as 'erysipelas'. The ubiquity of Erysipelothrix spp. makes infection possible in a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates. Cetaceans are highly susceptible to erysipelas, especially those under human care. The number of cases documented in wild cetaceans is low, the pathogenesis is incompletely understood, and the full spectrum of lesions is not well defined. The possible serotypes and species of the genus that can cause disease are unknown. In October 2022, a common bottlenose dolphin Tursiop

Occurrence of Brucella ceti in striped dolphins from Italian Seas.

Brucella ceti infections have been increasingly reported in cetaceans, although a very limited characterization of Mediterranean Brucella spp. isolates has been previously reported and relatively few data exist about brucellosis among cetaceans in Italy. To address this gap, we studied 8 cases of B. ceti infection in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded along the Italian coastline from 2012 to 2018, investigated thanks to the Italian surveillance activity on stranded cetaceans. We focused on cases of stranding in eastern and western Italian seas, occurred along the Apulia (N = 6),
